American Nomad is an award winning acoustic group in the widely eclectic Bay Area music scene. We were honored as a finalist in the 2011 International songwriting competition and were recognized in the 2011 Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Songwriter Competition. Rooted in Americana and folk/swing traditions, their carefully crafted original music maintains a modern relevance. Smart songwriting, catchy lyrics, tight rhythms, rich harmonies, and strong musicianship have already begun to earn American Nomad a reputation as a band that can intrigue listeners from a wide variety of musical tastes and backgrounds. Keeping in line with the ancient troubadour tradition, American Nomad draws from the spirit of travel and authentic life experience.
What's a Country Mile?
Country Mile will be the title track to American Nomad's debut LP to be recorded in July. We chose that name because we felt it was the thread between all the songs we've picked for the record. The term country mile refers to a long unknown distance away from your current location. A traveler can't know just how long it actually is until they've been down the road. We take it a step further and say it is the distance it takes to get through the hardships, the obstacles, the heartache, and the confusion that shows up in life. It takes courage to traverse our internal/external journeys because the distances we travel can be so obscure. Some of the paths are smoother than others, but courage is always what gets us through, and connects us in this human experience. It’s this vulnerability that we look to expose in ourselves, to be real about fears and heartbreak, and the courage we use to pick ourselves up again in the end.
Our album, Country Mile, is about what we all realize about ourselves while going through the journey, that is the universal narrative we keep finding ourselves bumping into. The album is just an extension of the overarching project we call American Nomad.

Working with Grammy winning producer Laurie Lewis
Local Bay Area Bluegrass legend and Grammy award winning producer Laurie Lewis will be producing our album, and we are ecstatic! Getting to make our album is a dream, but having the guidance of such a phenomenal artist is the icing on the cake. We couldn’t be more excited to learn from her and to see what she brings out in our sound that we haven’t heard before. We are truly humbled and honored to have her producing Country Mile.
About Laurie Lewis
"It's possible to be a strong female presence in the Bluegrass music world, but you have to be really strong. Laurie is one of the greatest Bluegrass artists, woman or man, because of her consistency over decades, the depth and width of her subject matter, her commitment to the Bluegrass form, and her technical command. Oh yes, and her strength. Laurie's strength manifests in many ways: her commanding presence on stage combined with an emotional vulnerability, the truths in her lyrics, her physical voice which transcends gender, her strong commitment to causes and issues in which she deeply believes, which all resonate with a respect for the land, the natural world, and human mercy and justice." -Darol Anger

Risks and challenges
The challenge is really once we get into the studio we need to make a killer record. Have no fear though. We've been working really hard on our song craft and practicing our little tails off. It also doesn't hurt that we are getting great feedback and direction by our producer Laurie Lewis. We truly believe this album will be the best music we've ever created.
