Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? educational video series

$5,946

93

Every dollar we raise beyond our initial goal will be used to put this much needed program into schools around the country. We believe that this video series is crucial for building a culture of life in our country and thus ultimately hope to offer Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? to schools for free.

$8,000 will help us with the cost of donating and delivering 200 copies of Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? to schools, religious education programs, college campus pro-life clubs, and youth ministries across the country. Additionally, this stretch goal will allow us to produce a flexible Seminar Study version of the Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? package, which allows pro-life clubs and other organizations to benefit from the videos with a condensed study guide format.

Would you like to help us reach this goal? Send us suggestions of schools and other programs that could benefit from Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? Email clsp@all.org

$15,000 will enable us to do a second printing and donate 400 copies of the Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? unit study to schools, pro-life clubs, and parishes in need. This stretch goal also includes the flexible Seminar Study version of Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? for pro-life clubs.

Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? is a multimedia unit study that teaches students about Margaret Sanger and how her actions and beliefs helped change America’s mindset regarding birth control, abortion, and regulations about who should be allowed to be born. Through the video component in the unit study, high school students explore Sanger’s eugenic ideas which led to the founding of the American Birth Control League, known today as the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

A little over 100 years ago this woman changed history. Our unit study takes students through Sanger’s life and shows how the “contraceptive mindset”—the attitude that human beings are a commodity and not a gift—ultimately leads to disrespect for every human being, especially those most vulnerable.

Many students think that Sanger is an American hero who stood up against a controlling government for a woman’s “right” to birth control. These students do not realize that she advocated for the segregation and sterilization of those she called “feeble-minded” persons:

Feeble-minded persons, habitual congenital criminals, those afflicted with inheritable disease, and others found biologically unfit by authorities qualified [to] judge should be sterilized or, in cases of doubt, should be so isolated as to prevent the perpetuation of their afflictions by breeding” (Margaret Sanger, “America Needs a Code for Babies,” March 1934). [emphasis added]

They also do not realize that Sanger believed birth control was perfectly in line with the purpose of eugenics, that is, the creation of a superior race through the elimination of the unfit:

“The campaign for Birth Control is not merely of eugenic value, but is practically identical in ideal, with the final aims of Eugenics” (Margaret Sanger, “The Eugenic Value of Birth Control Propaganda,” Birth Control Review, 1921).

For Sanger, birth control went beyond a woman controlling her body; they were means for eliminating the “unfit” from society. The “unfit” included the feeble minded, epileptics, criminals, and all individuals who would “taint” the public gene pool. Like many progressives at that time, Sanger was an elitist and a racist who believed that some human beings’ lives were more valuable than others’.

In Chapter 5 of Woman and the New Race, “The Wickedness of Creating Large Families,” Sanger wrote, “The most merciful thing that the large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”

This is the same woman politicians and celebrities tout as a “hero” and a “role model.” The pro-abortion movement even presents an award in Sanger’s honor to those who continue her “work.” Margaret Sanger may be dead, but her ideas about controlling the population are very much alive.

We are producing this video series so that the next generation knows the truth about the roots of the pro-abortion movement. Our videos have been created to reach and motivate high school students to become effective communicators of the pro-life movement.

Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? is a unit study meant for classroom use, in youth groups, or in homeschool environments. This important video series gives students a chance to discuss and process what they are learning with the help of their instructor.

The complete Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? package includes the DVD with the three-part video series and an instructor guide with discussion activities for taking the themes from the videos a step further. Also included are essay prompts, quizzes, and answer keys. All student handouts and worksheets are included as printable files on a CD-ROM with the instructor guide so that teachers can make as many copies as they need without worrying about the cost of a workbook. No additional preparation or research is required on the part of the teacher!

Each classroom needs only one copy of the Who Was the Real Margaret Sanger? package.

The series is almost finished, but we still need $4,700 to help complete the project. We need $1,200 to cover the cost of post-processing the videos and the cost of printing and distribution, and $2,400 to produce the DVDs and print the instructor guides included with every package. After Kickstarter fees, we will use the remainder to cover reward fulfillment costs.

Help us teach the next generation the truth about Margaret Sanger to prevent history from repeating itself!
