Fifty Feminist States: Future Seasons
Help fund future seasons of this roadtripping, storytelling podcast featuring feminist activists and artists across the US!
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, June 7 2019 4:59 AM UTC +00:00.
Fifty Feminist States is a road-tripping, storytelling podcast visiting all 50 US states to interview feminist activists and artists about their work for gender justice.
After a successful Kickstarter campaign last spring, Fifty Feminist States traveled almost 15,000 miles to visit 16 states and interview 37 people. Those interviews became 19 exciting episodes that paint intimate portraits of the feminist work that's happening in the US right now. Now we're back on Kickstarter to keep the podcast going!
The existing episodes delve into feminist perspectives on issues of reproductive rights, body positivity, electoral politics, indigenous environmentalism, trans + queer identity, witchcraft, blackness, refugee experience, sex worker rights and more. They educate, advocate, and entertain, while also providing an archive of feminist organizing frameworks and strategies across the nation.
Future episodes will do the same and more, traveling (with your help!) to the remaining 34 states to tell their feminist stories. Here's what some of our current listeners say about the podcast and how much they appreciate it:
What does Fifty Feminist States sound like?
Each episode of the Fifty Feminist States podcast focuses on one state and features one or more activists who live there to paint a portrait of a particular feminist issue (or issues) in that area. So far there have been sixteen episodes released and more will come out during this Kickstarter campaign!
Some episodes take an in-depth look at one activist's work on a particular issue (like the New York episode on fighting to decriminalize sex work) and others bring together many activists to show how multifaceted the feminist work in one geographic area is (like the Minnesota episode which features seven badass women working on feminist podcasting, yoga in academic settings, trivia for reproductive justice, and immigration in the Trump era).
Some episodes have a very issue-centric approach (like the Nebraska episode on home births) and others center more on the identity and development of an activist (like the Connecticut episode on being a fat, black, queer, feminist academic + activist).
You can listen to all the existing episodes of the podcast here + subscribe on iTunes here. Tuning in is the best way to understand what Fifty Feminist States is all about!
Who's behind this podcast?
Foremost, Fifty Feminist States is the voices of the activists + artists interviewed for the episodes. So far that's almost forty people. With your help it can be so many more.
Behind the scenes, the episodes are hosted and produced by Amelia Hruby, a podcaster + PhD student living in Chicago. Amelia does all of the logistical and technical work of the podcast in addition to handling the audio and design elements. It's a helluva lot of work, but she loves traveling to speak with folks fighting for gender justice, and she is truly grateful for the opportunity to carry their stories across the country and around the world.
Why another Kickstarter?
Last spring over 100 Kickstarter backers donated over $5000 to help fund the first two seasons of the podcast. It was amazing + we're so appreciative of your support to go do the thing that we told you Fifty Feminist States would do!
Now that we've proven we can + will do the work, there are still 34 states (and some districts, territories, protectorates) to go; so Fifty Feminist States needs your help to get there!
This trip operates on a super low budget. Think couch-surfing, camping, and cheap highway motels strung together by late-night drives in a Prius hatchback. The Kickstarter funds primarily go to fund those costs, as well as the costs of hosting and promoting the podcast online. Here's a breakdown of how we spent the money from the first Kickstarter campaign to cover costs from the first two seasons:
We anticipate that expenses will be roughly the same as future seasons progress, we just need more money to make those episodes happen. Your support is crucial for the future of this podcast! Without you it won't exist!
So all of that said...
