Knives and Throwing Bullets:
The Dark Art and Inspiration of Vaughn Belak
About the Artist
My art comes from a very personal place. For years in touring bands, I would do whatever it takes to continue my non-stop bender. My friends said I had dual accelerators and no brakes. I'd set my dick on fire to win a bar bet. Sobriety is a gift for those of us that take action and chase it with the same desire we chased oblivion. I know exactly how I got into the dark places I was in. I chose them. All the people I looked up to or worshipped were addicts and alcoholics, glorious degenerates on the edge of a major meltdown.
Eventually the music and narcotics stopped working for me and painting showed back up in my life and filled that place that was empty. When I got out of my own way and started looking for solutions instead of excuses my life started to change. It was like I had been driving with the parking brake on.
I will use literally whatever it takes to get the image onto the canvas. I have used everything from toothpicks, my fingers and make up sponges to now where my primary tools are Iwata airbrushes and a variety of paint brushes. I'm very utilitarian in that I have no aversion to finding the best tool for the job no matter what that looks like.
I am happy sober and I am happy not putting more drugs in my body. I am happy not having court dates or new hospital bills. I am happy knowing where I parked my car and who I was with last night. I am happy that there isn't blood on my hands today. Today, I am exactly the same person I was in the sense that I will do whatever it takes to stay sober. I have a life today that is absolutely the best it has ever been and I still want more. More understanding, more love, more happiness and more peace.
I've been fortunate to have been able to show my work at places ranging from the Spooky Empire conventions to ThirtySixBlack Art Gallery and to be supported by so many great patrons. Life is pretty incredible sometimes.
Creating something out of nothing helps me stay focused and now that I am not actively poisoning myself on a daily basis I have a lot more time to do what I love. I teach two series of classes in Florida on doing this. One is Art Always Sells, focused on the business side and the other I host is Oddlando Sketch Kvlt, which focuses on underground burlesque pop and fine art creativity. I am by no means an expert, just a guy on a path a few steps ahead of others that wants to help light the way and do whatever it takes to pay it forward. I hope this book will help in the same way.
Risks and challenges
I will do whatever it takes to make this an excellent book. The Blue Blood team has produced literally hundreds of successful projects in their 25+ years of print and digital production and distribution and we've been friends for most of that quarter century. I am very confident that, together, we will be able to overcome any challenges which might arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
