About this project

About the author:

As an author, I've chosen to go the route of independent publishing—and I absolutely love it. As a graphic artist as well as an author, it allows me to use both skill sets to craft and write the story, and to design the interior layout and cover. In addition, I get to write the stories I really want to tell—not what a publishing house believes the market wants. I retain the full rights to my work, and my books never have to go out of print. And in addition to all this, personally finding and connecting to readers is an awarding experience.

One thing I do lack as an indie author, is the author advance granted by a publisher. This advance gives the writer a means to help market themselves and their book and have time to get working on the next book. After going through the whole process of releasing What the Faeries Left Behind, I've come to appreciate how helpful that advance is to effective promotion, especially for a new author. Most of these things I either do myself or have found ways to do without cost, but there are a few vital things—including print copies of the book to sell at events, event/table fees, print runs of promotional material, postage for review copies, etc.—that are crucial to helping establish any career author.

As I really do love the indie publishing process, I'd like to share that with my backers. The excitement of creating a cover. The challenge of composing an engaging blurb.  Choosing just the right font in a serif/san serif war-torn world. The fun of picking what bonus material to include. Deciding what goes in the back pages of the book. Getting the book listed online. Ordering a proof copy and seeing how it all looks. I'll share these things during the three weeks of the campaign, and at times I'll be looking for your feedback on them if you're interested in commenting.

I like to say that I write stories of deep, meaningful fun. My first three novels are urban fairy tales, with another in the works. Take a moment if you'd like and head over to my blog, Caution: Adults Playing: http://ambermichellecook.weebly.com/das-blog.html.  I'm a big advocate of grown-ups taking their fun and wonder seriously!

You can also find the book page for What the Faeries Left Behind (including reviews and an excerpt) on my Wubbulous Writing website. I'd like to meet more of my fellow writers and readers who enjoy good doses of fun and imagination in their fiction, so please drop me a line using the contact form, or leave comments there or here.

About the book:

Here's my current blurb for Defense Mechanisms, my second book, a 12,000 word novella:

What if your deja vu was really flashes of a life running parallel to your own?

An imaginative child, Janey left childhood far behind as soon as older children and adults began to tease her for it, much to the disappointment of her younger brother. On her thirtieth birthday, the first Pulse hits and drives them to seek shelter at his favorite hangout – a one-of-a-kind indoor playland for grown-ups called the Imaginarium. When the place is attacked by urban looters, will she becomes an unwilling 'defender of imagination?'

Raised within the confines of Tanglewood, a workshop-residence formed from the awakening of a grove of silver birch, Ozanne fled her family's unrelenting expectations for a life of frivolity and vanity at Court. Upon the passing of a Wave that obstructs all but personal Glamour, she races back with her brother to protect it from the Foe, though feeling she has little to offer. Yet why does he persist in looking to her to protect them?

Defense Mechanisms is a contemporary fairy tale of finding realistic, modern-day happy endings when the ways we learn to protect ourselves from other people's emotional sore spots, like ignorance and hate, keep us from being who we really are and finding our place in life.

Risks and challenges

Defense Mechanisms is fully written, and in the process of being line edited.

I have drafts of a book cover, a catch phrase and a book blurb. I'm working on the interior pages' layout and content. As soon as I've gone from draft to end-product on the things listed above—uploaded the interior and the cover files to Createspace, received my proof copy from them, and the Amazon page for it goes live—I'll begin the process of converting the manuscript to e-book format and upload that to Smashwords and KDP.

As I've done all of this before with What the Faeries Left Behind, it's only a matter of time and effort to complete the project. My goal is to have it released in both formats by mid July.

If this Kickstarter campaign succeeds, I'll be able to order print copies of the book to take to events to sign and sell, pay the table fees for upcoming book selling events, print business cards and bookmarks to promote it, and cover postage for review copies as well as provide my backers with thank yous and fulfill the advanced copy orders!
