The Apocalyptic Alphabet Book
Because everyone should be worried.
The end of the world is nigh.
We hope you're all as worried about it as we are, because if enough of us are freaked out maybe we can do something to avoid it.
But we're all surrounded by people who are uninformed, and who seem to be living like there will always be a tomorrow. You know the type -- their heads are in the sand, and it’s impossible to get them to recognize real news, much less to read academic papers and scientific journals. They don’t have go bags or stockpiles of food and water, and they never pay attention to charismatic conspiracy theorists or desperate doomsayers.
That's why we created The Apocalyptic Alphabet, an end-of-the-world primer disguised as a simple children's book. It's suitable for sharing with anyone, no matter how low their reading levels. You can leave copies in your bathroom or waiting room, and share it with friends during your next barbecue, playdate, game night, or whatever.
Best of all, as the book ramps up everyone's anxieties, it also provides a few laughs. (All of which should be followed by informed conversations, of course.)
- a 4.5" x 6" hardcover or larger (see stretch goals below)
- about 32 full-color pages including 26 alphabetical pages plus more for our bios, copyright info, a title page, and endpapers and whatever else we're inspired to include.
- matte-laminated cover
- thick, non-glossy paper that feels great
- Flammable, so it can be used to start fires during an event (if the world isn't already on fire).
Legalistic Note: This book is intended for adults, not kids. This is true, and we're also stating it plainly because we're not testing the book for lead and whatever else one has to do to publish a book intended for children these days. You're free to read it to your kids (or others) of course, and you may even let them pick it up and hold it themselves. We cannot control you. But if you put it into kids' hands we suggest they wear protective gloves, safety goggles, and a snug mask rated P100, as they should when handling library books or any printed material intended for adults.
- PDF format
- Enjoyable now, but harder to read after an electromagnetic pulse or solar flare has fried all of your electronics.
Pages and cover shown above are not final.
eBook Level - $7
A DRM-free PDF version of the book suitable for reading on your devices.
One Book - $15
An actual, old-fashioned physical book. It's made of used trees! We love used trees! (Maybe too much.)
Signed Book - $20
A physical book with Gene's and Willow's signatures.
Signed + Sketched Book (limit 100) -- $30
We'll both sign your book, and Willow will draw something apocalyptic in it for you, too. These books can be dedicated to the person or organization of your choice. (We'll ask for that information in a survey after the campaign, when we collect your address.)
Friendship Edition -- $26
Two physical books: one for you + one for a friend (or for you to pass on to your local library).
Best Friends Edition -- $36
Two signed physical books, one for you plus one for a friend (or for you to donate to your local library).
Give Me Five -- $54
Five unsigned books for you, your store, or your bomb-proof archive. You can also send these to elected representatives with a list of your concerns.
Appear in the Book -- $500
You will be appear as a character on the specified page in the final book.
You'll have to provide us with a copy of a photo ID along with another photo or two, and you'll need to sign a release allowing us to use your likeness. All of that is due to us before Sept 30th. (No refunds if you don't want to sign the release, if you're late in getting us the documents we need, or if you're just generally surly. And yeah, you can give this to a friend as a gift as long as they provide the documentation we need.)
You'll also receive a signed + sketched edition of the book.
Want more books?
If you want to purchase additional books, please add $13 per unsigned book or $18 per signed book to your Kickstarter pledge that already includes at least one physical book. You may need to pay additional shipping costs, too, especially if you want a bunch. We'll calculate the final cost of shipping after the campaign.
Even if you don't add funds now, there will also be a limited number of additional books to order after the Kickstarter is complete, when you fill out your survey.
Want a bunch of books for your bookstore, comic shop, library, or personal hoard? Contact Gene.
- If pledges reach $10,000, we'll send everyone who pledges at the eBook Level or higher a DRM-free PDF coloring book of The Apocalyptic Alphabet. It probably won't be exactly the same as the book.
- If 1300 books are ordered across all pledge levels, we'll increase the size of the hardcover to 6" x 8". The other specs will stay the same, so you'll still want to hold and caress it.
A limited number of add-ons will be available to order when the post-Kickstarter surveys are sent out, including library tarot cards, enamel pins, and LEGO kits from previous Library Comic Kickstarter campaigns, plus a few of our T-shirts. We'll offer you special discounts if you pledge at the eBook level or higher. You will pay for these add-ons later if you want them.
Want your reward shipped to a country that's not currently listed? Message Gene via Kickstarter or email him and he'll add it.
Rewards and add-ons ship in bubble mailers or boxes via USPS Media Mail, First Class, or Priority Mail, depending on the final size and weight.

Who we are:
We're currently making Library Comic together, and we've been working on a graphic novel -- The Burning Blade of the Badlands -- for a bit, too. (You can read all 64 pages of Part 1 now, and follow us to read Part II when we start posting that (later this year we hope).)
Risks and challenges
Gene has worked on Kickstarters for several Unshelved books plus has printed/published two books of his own. We're working with companies he's printed with before to mitigate risks.
The stated timeline is close to a worst case scenario. Gene has a record of fulfilling Kickstarter campaigns earlier than promised, and he's hoping to do that again. Timing could be impacted by needing to make corrections after seeing proofs, and by things beyond our control: labor strikes, trade wars, the big earthquake Seattle has been waiting for, damage to the books in transit, global pandemics, unicorns, etc. But it's unlikely that any of this will happen.
Throughout production and fulfillment, we promise to be transparent about any issues that will affect timing, and to keep backers informed every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
