About

Amaro {bitter}: having a sharp, pungent taste; not sweet; marked by intensity or severity.

Last fall brought some (bitter) disappointment: a broken leg and a stalled Kickstarter left Amaro in no man’s land. But we’re back! All too familiar to bumps in the road, we’re once again ready to bring the Sicilian food landscape to life, bitterness and all.

Amaro is the story of the complexity of food culture in Sicily. The film delves into the island’s gastronomic history, highlights present-day culinary traditions, and follows the hands and hearts of a population who have embraced the most remote, least valued, and often disregarded taste: bitterness. The film talks of the foraging traditions of an agricultural state, where gathering bitter greens was a last resort, a symbol of need, often transformed into a simple delicacy. It follows the Good Friday ceremony, an event in the small town of Caltanissetta where local foragers, who represent the bitter taste lead the town’s celebratory procession. Amaro also talks of its namesake, the Italian digestivo that is truly an expression of place that vary according to the terroir and the different Sicilian landscapes.

Finally, the film takes us from the streets and fields into the homes of Sicilian locals. In the kitchen bitterness plays a leading role in food alchemy, transforming what could easily be discarded into delectable dishes and products with unique flavors and mythical traditions. From all kinds of honey to cheeses, and sauteed cardoons with anchovies, to risotto with wild asparagus, bitterness serves to elevate the other tastes we sometimes take for granted, and brings us back to the roots: of the land, of the culture, and of tradition. From field to fork, Amaro follows a flavor that has helped shape the Sicilian food identity.

Who’s on board?

Fabrizia Lanza is the director of the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School and travels around the world to produce events focusing on Sicilian cuisine in renowned restaurants including Alice Water’s Chez Panisse. Fabrizia is the author of Olive, A Global History and the cookbook Coming Home to Sicily: Seasonal Harvests and Cooking at Case Vecchie.

She shares her vision and abundance of knowledge about the Sicilian food landscape as the creative designer of the Amaro project. As the face of the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School, she promotes the film and its mission both locally and abroad.

Federico Savonitto is a documentarist from the Friuli region who has been living in Sicily for almost ten years, working on characters, places and symbols of the territory. After getting his degree in Trieste, he attended the Sicilian branch of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. For many years he has been a teaching tutor at the Italian National Film School and has completed several documentaries such as La fine chenonhofatto (2011), La città sconosciuta (2013), La battaglia di Capo Bon (2017), Pellegrino (2017). Besides working on Amaro, he is currently editing the documentary He codirected with Francesco Costabile, developing the project Tango mucho qué contar, written with Andrea Bajani, and working on the short documentary Das Sphäroid with Ruben Monterosso and Gianni Sirch.

Fratelli Mancuso Enzo and Lorenzo Mancuso were born in Sutera, in the province of Caltanisetta, Sicily. In the ‘70s they moved to London to find jobs in construction. Through the eight years they remained there, they turned to music as a way to keep alive the traditions and memories of their Italian heritage. They have toured across Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Japan and produced various albums. The directory Anthony Minghella used one of the tracks from their CD, Italian Odissey, for the soundtrack of the film "The Talented Mr. Ripley". Their music will accompany the Amaro film.

Henna Garrison has an avid interest in cultural communication around food. Born and raised in Nantucket, Massachusetts, she has been a lover of Italy since she first visited at the age of 12. In 2015, she graduated from the University of Gastronomic Sciences with a Masters in Food Culture and Communication. As the Program Director at the  Anna Tasca Lanza school, she directs and develops the school's educational programming and manages the general Kickstarter campaign.

Sam McKeown is a graduate student at the American University of Paris, learning the ways through which food and communications intersect. Originally a Southern Maryland native, he has spent the last year living in Sicily and managing the Anna Tasca Lanza social media, in order to better understand how to digitally portray the complex narrative of Sicilian culture and cuisine. He hopes to learn how social media can be used to empower small producers and capture the essence of agrarian landscapes. Prior to this, he also partnered with a French startup to develop their social media strategy and is a freelance graphic designer and content writer. When he’s not behind the lens of the camera, he is clumsily trying to learn Sicilian cooking.

In 2013 and 2014 Fabrizia and the team successfully completed two Kickstarter campaigns to produce Amuri, a story of the slow food traditions in Sicily. The film, which was shown in over ten locations across the US and awarded a Bronze Award in the Spotlight Short Film Awards, introduced us to an incredible network of passionate and creative people willing to support our mission. We’re excited to return to Kickstarter to once again connect with a close-knit group interested in promoting Sicilian food and culture worldwide.

In addition, we think the all or nothing approach to Kickstarter is important. After reaching almost €8,000 in potential funding the last Kickstarter campaign, we’ve reevaluated our resources and also been able to secure some private funding, which has allowed us to bring our current goal to €17,000.

The bulk of our rewards center around joining a close-knit community of passionate people willing to put food at the forefront of our future and give value to the gastronomic histories and traditions of the past. We want to create and connect a community that believes in the values promoted by the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School and even might be willing to join us here in Sicily to share the local cuisine and tradition.

All of our supporters will be invited to follow along in the production and post-production of the film through a closed-group Facebook page for complete behind the scenes access.

Budget

Of our €17,000 euro goal, all profits will be going to the production of the film. After the 8% taken by Kickstarter and around 22% that will go to Italian taxes, the remaining is allocated to our production team, with the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School donating the rewards and man-power to create this film.

Budget breakdown:

  • Production (producer, crew and logistic support): 60%
  • Kickstarter Fee: 5%
  • Payment Fees: 3%
  • Taxes and legal fees: 22%
  • Rewards: 10%

Risks and challenges

We’ve already hit a pothole so typical of Sicily’s roads when last year Fabrizia broke her leg and wasn’t able to complete the Amaro promotional tour in the United States. But during the last Kickstarter we connected with a fantastic community willing to support and promote our project. We’re ready to make things happen!

Navigating the production of a film has inherent risks and challenges, but filming in rural Sicily in the dead of winter has potential for its own (often literal) road bumps. Infrastructure is unreliable and we will be filming and working with locals who are voluntarily participating in our film out of a desire to share their cultural food knowledge with the world.

We have tried to be generous with our estimated timeline because of these challenges, however we ask you to keep in mind the potential difficulties we may face. Filming will take place Winter/Spring 2018 - 2019 and post-production through 2019. We hope to debut in early 2020 or late 2019.

Bottom line: this film will be made! There are just many variables to coordinate along the way.
