New Orleans based designer, Amanda deLeon, will present her much anticipated, 2014 Fall/Winter Collection, “LaNouvelle-Orléans,” at New York Fashion Week (NYFW), February 2014. This event will officially mark deLeon’s debut in the world’s fashion capital: “The thought of finally showing at NYFW is both exhilarating and terrifying. This is something that I have daydreamed about for quite some time, and I am still struggling to wrap my head around this giant leap that I am about to take....It’s amazing what can happen when you just believe in yourself and dive in face first.”
Innovative filmmaker, Alex Payne, who has directed campaigns for progressive platforms such as TED: Ideas Worth Spreading, has aligned with Amanda in efforts to let us in on what sparks, drives and inspires the designer's most unique vision. Alex spreads Amanda's creative message to tastemakers beyond New Orleans' borders, in this KickStarter campaign introductory film.
Amanda deLeon’s KickStarter Mission:
Amanda will use her presence at New York Fashion Week to create real connections with global tastemakers. She feels compelled to tell her personal story and showcase a part of New Orleans to an elite audience in a manner never presented before : “This is my chance to help bring back and rebuild the garment manufacturing industry in New Orleans through pivotal relationships I build in presenting my Fall/Winter 2014 Collection in one the the world’s few cities that matter most to fashion.” Amanda also hopes to inspire and encourage burgeoning design talent from untapped fashion territory (such as New Orleans) to ignite similar fundraising efforts, providing them with seed capital needed to present their own collections to critical global audiences...consisting of elite members of the press, renown retailers/buyers and celebrity stylists. Emerging designer presentations during NYFW jumpstart the relationship building process, from blogger to buyer, in the initial, yet critical stages of brand development and awareness raising efforts.
Amanda made the decision to present at NYFW, as she has greatly inspired emerging local designers to follow their dreams and by doing so, create awareness around serious global issues that the industry is currently struggling with.
As an independent designer, Amanda sees: 1) The urgent need to produce garments ethically and sustainably; 2) The importance of educating consumers as to the threat that the international fast fashion movement poses in compromising fair labor standards, humane practices and workplace safety; and 3) The necessity of job creation in emerging designer communities that are suffering severely given the current economy.
A student of architecture, Amanda is most inspired by the unique beauty of New Orleans’ most sacred cemetery landscape, an undeniable staple in the city's history and culture. After musing with the idea of a New Orleans' burial, the collection began to develop based on her feelings and experiences of not only death, but also personal struggles with religion, depression and anxiety.
“My creativity stems from a personal process. My designs tell a personal story. Sometimes it’s difficult to express my feelings, thoughts and ideas in words. I use my work to create a story that someone can see unfold in front of them. I try to take my darkest thoughts and turn them into something beautiful. The premise behind my work is to make an uneasy subject something a little easier to swallow. Maybe then, if someone sees and understands my story, I can make a connection with people having those same fears. Life is always about finding a connection so that we can close that gap of separation and don’t feel alone in what we are going through.”
Risks and challenges
THE FUNDS GARNERED THROUGH YOUR GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS ARE INTEGRAL IN MAKING AMANDA DELEON’S FIRST NEW YORK FASHION WEEK PRESENTATION A REALITY.
Amanda is aware of how challenging it can be for an emerging designer to show at the same time that renown fashion heavy weights and conglomerates will be presenting their collections to a global audience of decision makers, that have the power to place the most progressive names in fashion on the map. The attention vying attention process is cutthroat. Amanda has prepared a unique message about her collection, hoping critical members of the press and retail community will be compelled by and embrace.
The GREATEST challenge Amanda faces is securing the much needed funds that will make her presentation a standout, in what boils down to fashion’s fiercest competition, consisting of over 250 designer participants. The expenses behind the production of a successful fashion presentation are grand and account for everything ranging from model compensation to light direction, requisite event insurance costs and all in between.
Amanda is an industry innovator and desires to engage in out-of-the-box marketing efforts that reflect that. She hopes to live stream her collection in the internet space, an invention that the late Alexander McQueen first brought to the international consumer audience, garnering 3.5 million views on YouTube. Done properly, such engagement efforts cost, at the very minimum, $12,000...a big figure for small designers, like Amanda, who require, at the most basic level, a satellite hookup.
A small group of industry influencers have discovered Amanda’s talent, have taken the leap with the designer, and are already hard at work striving to achieve sponsorship commitments from corporations providing hair and makeup artistry services, ranging from MAC Cosmetics to L’Oreal, Paris. But the funds that ultimately matter, will come from each and every contribution made in this first phase of Amanda’s KickStarter campaign efforts.
WE CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! AND LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MANY OF YOU IN NEW YORK, THIS FEBRUARY!
