How Did All This Sweet Music Get Started?
If you'd told me, Alyse Black, that I'd make an album of lullabies (for children OR grown ups) a few years ago, I would have laughed. But when Scarlett was born, I realized I wouldn't mind being the biggest fool in the world - I wouldn't mind doing pretty much anything - if it meant her being in my life and being happy.
So, I sang to her - A LOT. (She even started singing along!) A few people commented on how much they liked hearing my voice sing these classic old charming songs for her. Then it occurred to me: I LOVE LISTENING TO LULLABIES!! I love drinking wine to them. I love reading to them. I love cleaning to them. I love playing them for Scarlett. I love driving to them. I love relaxing to them. I just LOVE having them in my life.
And THEN I figured out I'm not alone: lullabies are something people will always love because they calm the mind, they soothe the tired spirit, they speak of hope and love and inner beauty - all the things that matter most in life - especially in this hurried and chaotic world we live in now.
Who Is 'Night, Sweet Pea?
So... I casually mentioned the project to my friends, the incredibly talented Shawnee Kilgore and William Wallace, and they seemed stoked to be a part of it! It was just going to be me (Alyse Black), Shawnee and Will - singing and playing the same as if we were performing for you in your living room or around a campfire. Thus was born a little collective of lullaby-playing friends, 'Night, Sweet Pea.
But then we got into the studio, and Will said, "Well, obviously, we'll have upright bass on these, right?" And I thought, "Holy Moly! This song would be even more epically charming if the accordion came in RIGHT HERE!" So we started to bring more amazing musicians in on the project. We recorded harmonies to pretty much the whole album. And it is sounding INCREDIBLE! I can't stop listening to the early tracks!

Where Does My Pledge Go?
But now we need to finish it! And we need to pay all the awesome, professional musicians that are contributing there significant talents to making this album phenomenally precious. And we need to pay the licensing fees to be able to release cover songs. We need to pay for our engineer and studio time. We need to manufacture some actual CDs for people to buy and to send out into the world to get the word out. We need a reasonable promotion budget. All together, we need at least $10,000 if we're really going to do this right.
We need you. The future of the music industry is right here, and it starts with a great project idea and the people who want to see that project happen in the best way possible. People who are so excited about it that they throw in what they can and let their friends know to make sure the project can be a success.
What Will I Get for It?
In addition to knowing that you made an incredible project come to fruition, you also get rewards! (See the column on the right!) Everything from hand-written thank you cards and high-rez MP3s up through hand-painted high-quality ukeleles (WE paint them - I promise they'll look GORGEOUS!) and home cooked meals by US in YOUR HOME when we come to your house to perform a CONCERT for you, your little ones (if you have 'em), and anyone else you'd like to invite!
What Will You Do With "Extra" Money?
More things to make it better for you! Anyone who's ever planned a budget for this type of project knows that there is NEVER too much money - there are always more instrumentalists you'd like to have on the album, more editing you wish you could have done, more CDs you wish you could have printed, MORE VIDEOS you wish you could have made, and more promotion that would have helped spread the word better to get the beautiful music further out into the world.
Why Should I Pledge Now?
A few reasons: there are some LIMITED rewards for pledging that only a handful of people will be able to get.
Next, we'll be giving away a sweet little prize to the people that pledge right away an early version of one of the best tracks on the album!
Also, and THIS IS SO IMPORTANT: If we don't raise our minimum, we get nothing. You get no albums, and we don't get the funds to move forward on the project. No one gets extra lovely lullabies with which to relax and calm their little ones down. After having listened to the songs a bunch myself and having played them for several other peeps that went nuts over them, I'm a firm believer that this is a lose-lose situation.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE THIS INCREDIBLE!
I LOVE the songs on this album. I LOVE the people who recorded it with me. I LOVE the way we recorded them. I LOVE Scarlett, the Muse of the whole project. We're pouring so very very much love into the album. I just know that you'll love it back.
Who needs a label when you are making music that people love so much that they are willing to help you make it happen! Thank you so, so much for reading this and watching our little video!
Thank you so very, very much for pledging and helping us spread the word! As soon as you've made your pledge, please go tell everyone you did it!
See you at the finish line!! xx
**home concert or home concert/dinner must be scheduled within 12 months of release of album
