We did it! Thank you to all of our wonderful backers and supporters of every kind!
As seen on:
In September of 2013 catastrophic flooding struck Colorado’s Front Range. President Obama declared a state of emergency and released the National Guard and FEMA. Entire communities were cut off when raging waters swept away mountain roads, and over 19,000 homes were damaged.
Before the rain stopped a small group of friends in Boulder went out and started shoveling. Inspired by the action, Aly Nicklas, director of Knee Deep, started a Facebook page meant to connect those who needed help with those who wanted to give it. It took off. Almost overnight, this group of friends was running a large scale disaster response effort that pulled in strangers and friends alike, despite very little collective experience in either disaster relief or volunteer organization.
It was a life-shifting experience for many of those involved—we've got about half the footage we need for the film, and this Kickstarter will allow us to finish shooting and edit Knee Deep. Woop!
The Mudslingers became the subject of many news stories, including NBC's Nightly News and the Today Show. At its peak, the group was comprised of hundreds of volunteers. They helped upwards of 400 homes in Boulder County. Digging a community out of natural disaster isn't the easiest work, but for many of those who picked up phones or shovels to take part in this effort it was one of the most rewarding experiences of their life.
Reflecting on how hundreds of people ended up diving selflessly into this effort, often despite lack of experience, we found ourselves wondering: What is the tipping point that takes someone from observer to participant? What is the impact of service on both the volunteer and the beneficiary? How can we empower individuals to see their capacity for creating impact in their own communities?
WHAT A SUCCESSFUL KICKSTARTER WILL DO
This Kickstarter will allow us to complete production of the film and give us a huge start into the editing process (check out the budget below for a more in-depth breakdown). Aly captured a lot of great footage during the actual volunteer effort, but she was crazy busy coordinating and shoveling mud (not to mention she didn’t know she’d be making a film), so we still have follow-up filming to do and more footage to track down—not to mention many hours of storyboarding, sound mixing, organizing and editing.
Funds will also go to Boulder musicians Paul Kimbris and Philip Parker, who will be composing an original score for the film—when you support us you’re supporting them too! That’s their music you heard in the Kickstarter video. Some money will go towards equipment that we need to up our production quality and deliver an even more sparkling product. The Kickstarter fees, taxes and the cost of the rewards are also budgeted for, because it’s important to us that you get your goods on time and that they’re as awesome as we’ve promised they’ll be. We’ve already given lots of time & love to the creation of this film, and we’re committed to seeing it through. Back us, and write your name into the story!
ADDITIONAL FUNDS RAISED
Know that we’ll be using social media reach to push this film across the internet . . but wouldn’t it look keen on the big screen too? Additional funding will help us submit Knee Deep into film festivals across the country and push into other avenues for furthering distribution.
Additional funds raised will be also used towards sharpening our final product: sound design, professional color correction, and licensing of additional footage (for instance, footage from the actual flood, which we don’t have much of). Funds will also be used to hire some hands to help with shooting and editing, which will be of great asset in speeding up production.
TO THE BACKERS
The Knee Deep movement happened because of a community–it never would have existed without every person involved. Likewise, this preservation of the story is a community effort and experience.
As a backer you’ll get exclusive updates and first access to the film. We also want to give you some tangible rewards that can serve as reminders of the Knee Deep spirit, and of our appreciation for every person who has been a part of this movement.
Check out some of the cool rewards you’ll get for pledging below. You can select your choice on the right (scroll up a bit!).
Important notes for backers:
- Paul Alexios Kimbiris Album will be delivered by August 2014 via a digital download link! You can also expect to see your thank you cards long before the estimated delivery dates (which are focused around the film being finished). We plan to have other rewards (hats, t-shirts, etc) out sooner too, and will keep you updated on that!
- For $150 Level backers: check out the three photos you get to choose from here. You'll select them later, if the project is funded, but you can check them out now.
- For 5K Level backers: go check out the flood photos you can choose from here. Again, you'll make your final choice later on, after the projects ends (and if we're funded!).
The BIGGEST thing you can do to get behind this project is to share it. We’ve written out a few ways you can share it below, but we’re eager for creative ideas. THANK YOU for sharing—this is how something big gets started!

NEW TO KICKSTARTER?
To pledge and become a backer means that you choose a donation level (and you can pledge any amount—it doesn’t need to be a listed amount) and then select the rewards you want. You can choose to forgo a reward if you just want to support the project. Up to you!
Your card will NOT be charged until the projects ends, and only if it’s fully funded. If it's fully funded we’ll be in touch with updates and to request any information we need to fulfill upon your selected rewards. And then it’s time to sit back and follow our updates as you choose (we’ll give you a few options depending on how closely you want to follow) while we crank on the film!
We can’t wait to have you as a spoke in this empowering wheel—thank you!
