About

Written with humor and lots of heart, "Always Be Santa: True Stories From The Guy In The Red Suit" is a collection of stories from my several years of portraying Santa that will be enjoyed by both children and adults. A unique feature in this book will be that the stories are presented so that families can have an advent type/Countdown to Christmas experience each night leading up to Christmas Day. The reader will enjoy finding out the different things that children – and adults -  will say to Santa during the classic "Santa Photo" environment, or when running into him at the grocery store. Anywhere from asking for toys, wanting to know how old Santa is, telling on their siblings...or their parents, to asking him "life questions". The stories are funny, heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking as Santa navigates the challenge of saying just the right thing for the right request. For instance, the following occurred at a photo studio in Charolette, NC:

"Here are some moments from Charlotte - Day 1:

Worst Moment: A mom was lowering her 2 year old son to sit on my lap. His rear end was pointing in my direction, and was at my eye level...when he released something that was so toxic I thought the wax on my mustache would melt. The fan on the floor in front of me, that up until then was keeping me cool, was now blowing the noxious fumes all over me. I may need to burn my suit.

Most Uncomfortable Moment: Please see above.

Best Moment: Right before a family came in for their photo session, the assistant came in to tell me that one of the kids was an 11 year old special needs girl. Her parents said that she might be a little nervous around Santa. He name was Isabella. They came in and she was dressed in a very pretty red dress with sequins on it. I said, "Well, thank you for wearing my favorite color Isabella!" As everyone was taking their places for the pictures, Isabella walked right up beside me and started gently touching my beard. "Pretty fuzzy, huh?" I commented. Then she very delicately ran the tip of her finger along both sides of my mustache. She made a sound, and I guess it was the look in her eyes that made me say to her, "Yes. I'm really Santa." Her face lit up in the most beautiful smile! She sat down on my lap, put her arm around me and laid her head on my shoulder - still smiling. She stayed that way during the pictures. Sometimes rubbing her hand on my sleeve - sometimes touching my beard again. When the pictures were finished and her dad said it was time to go, she grabbed me by the hand and scooted closer. I took her other hand and helped her stand, and she turned to face me. I looked at her and said, "You are beautiful inside and out, Isabella." She looked at me with eyes that expressed unconditional kindness that just radiated from her. Something we all wish we could do. Then she hugged me and I made the mistake of making eye contact with her dad. He was tearing up, and I found myself doing the same. I got my Christmas present from Isabella today.

Civilian Santa Moment: This happened at the grocery store after the photo session while I was in my regular clothes. A little girl of about four years old spotted me and shouted, "Mama! Sanna Cwaus!" She ran over and took my hand. "Sanna Cwaus! Shop with me!" The mom looked at me with her mouth open, shrugged and said, "Let's shop!". So, hand-in-hand I went grocery shopping with little Kelsey and her mom. Smart little girl too. When mom wasn't looking, Kelsey would grab an item and hand it to me. Mom would turn around, see what I was holding and say, "Oh, Santa. We don't eat that." I had Kelsey's back though and didn't snitch. "Sorry. I just like sugary sweet things. Like Kelsey!" I tickled Kelsey, she giggled and I thought that was the end of it. After the third time, mom finally caught on to what her daughter was trying to make it look like Santa was trying to sneak her this stuff. They finished their shopping, and I told them I needed to get a few things. I said, "Thanks for letting me shop with you, Kelsey. It was very special, just like you!" As they walked away, Kelsey shouted "Bye Sanna Cwaus! I wuv you!".

My hope is that these stories will prompt some family discussions about what happens in each story, and also encourage kids and adults to “Always Be Santa” to the people they encounter every day. Not just at Christmas time – but also all year long.

The manuscript is completed and I've been searching for a literary agent and publisher to get "Always Be Santa" on the market for the 2019 holiday season. This is a complicated and long journey. The interest that I have received so far is an opportunity called "Hybrid Publishing" that has been offered to me by two publishers. It's similar to self-publishing, where the author invests their own money and time into getting their book edited, art work done, copyrights, then finally published and marketed. With hybrid publishing there is still a financial investment, but the publisher handles everything else. I've been told that if I make a commitment by June or July, we'll be able to hit the 2019 holiday season release date.

I'm very grateful for the positive feedback and support I have received from family, friends and strangers in reaction to my stories that I've posted on social media - and the encouragement to write this book. To show my appreciation for support of this campaign, I have set up some fun rewards levels for specific contribution amounts. Pledged financial support through this campaign will go towards the following:

This collection of stories and illustrations will be presented as if they were possibly written by the real Santa Claus. My hope is that it will also create opportunities for a special family time each night during the Christmas holiday, and reading from this book could be the central part of that. Everyone hearing or reading these stories will find their own take aways in these stories and how they reflect some of their own experiences. But they’ll also realize that they can apply some of the aspects of the stories to their own lives. "Always Be Santa" will provide a glimpse into the unique world of a professional Santa and my real encounters with real people. Adults are not exempt from sharing with Santa, and readers will be surprised, connect with and be touched by some of the sincere requests these “big kids” reveal to Santa Claus.

Children listening to or reading this book will delight in identifying with the children in the stories. Their imagination will be peaked as they put themselves in these situations, and they’ll become excited at the actual possibility of running into the real Santa at McDonald’s or at the grocery store themselves.

I’ve been asked many times if I’m the real Santa. Mostly I respond with, “Do you think I am?” And more often than not the response is “Yes!” During the holiday season there are Santa Clauses everywhere, and the common explanation to kids who ask why they see so many different guys in red suits is that they are all Santa’s Helpers.  But could one of them possibly be the real Santa? That’s the rumor you know. Could it be me? Hold that thought until after you read my stories. Merry Christmas Always!

Risks and challenges

Starting a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the Hybrid-Publishing for "Always Be Santa" was suggested to me by a long-time friend. I've done extensive research regarding the publishing aspect of this project. There is some risk, but I am confident in the wide-spread appeal of these stories to enable me to reach the $3000 goal and equally confident with the idea of Hybrid-Publishing vs. Self-Publishing - and that both will lead to the success of my book.
