_________________ ORIGINAL POST _________________

"One way to trace the history of the movies is to look at the evolution of alternative cinemas—to consider, in other words, how an inventive approach to showing films can foster a new way of understanding them.” -New York Times, Sep. 2011

What is Alt Screen?

Alt Screen was launched in April 2011 as an editorial side project, experiment in digital publishing, and practical solution to a specific need. We wanted to create an online clearinghouse for information on New York's alternative cinemas, film festivals and special screening events—something comprehensive, easy to navigate and elegantly designed. Why? Because that's what we wanted to read ourselves and knew didn't exist.

Alt Screen has been written about in the New York Times ("a comprehensive guide"), the New Yorker ("looks cool”) and the L Magazine (who voted us "Best New Website" in their annual Best of Brooklyn issue). Read More on our site.

What do we mean by "alternative" film screenings?

Picture a summer-night screening of Woody Allen's Manhattan with the New York skyline on the dusky horizon, or a revival of Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train projected on top of a refurbished elevated railway.

OK we admit that most of these screenings don't happen in beautiful outdoor venues. But wouldn't you like to have seen a commemorative screening of Mean Streets bookended by an intro and Q&A with Martin Scorsese? Or a 10th-anniversary revival of The Royal Tenenbaums capped by an on-stage reunion of director Wes Anderson with the cast and crew? How about a midnight revelation of Showgirls (we know you love it!) or an interactive "Sing & Swear Along" keyed to Team America: World Police (with free beer for all).

Alt Screen spotlights films playing outside the multiplex and under the radar, or what are technically called "non-theatrical screenings": industry-speak for every film that is NOT a first-run feature in its official commercial release. That doesn't mean we're "anti-mainstream" or "anti-Hollywood." It means we focus on the movies and events that are likely to be ignored or given short shrift by New York's metropolitan dailies and (unsteadily declining) alternative weeklies.

So how does it work?

The backbone of the site is our daily screenings calendar. Staff favorites are floated to the top of each date so you don't miss the good stuff, and all are clearly linked to their official listings, online trailers and aggregated reviews.

Our "Editor's Pick" for the day's Best in Show is put into historical and popular context on our blog. We publish a curated roundup of editorial and promotional content, all generously illustrated and filled with links to outside sources. Whether you're a casual moviegoer with a healthy intellectual curiosity or a PhD candidate in Cinema Studies, the daily primers should provide lots of fodder for your post-screening coffee klatsch.

These core features are complimented by Alt Screen's semi-regular series of original, long-form essays profiling major series and events.

Check out our work for yourself.

McElhaney on Minnelli: official BAMcinématek program notes by Alt Screen.

We've published career profiles of actors like David BowieJudy GarlandRobert RyanTuesday Weld and Marilyn Monroe, and such directors as Hal AshbyPaul MazurskyCharlie ChaplinGus Van SantW.C. Fields and David Cronenberg. We've covered young and upcoming festivals like NewfestMigrating Forms, the New York Asian Film Festival and BAMCinemaFEST. We've revisited newly restored films by Nicholas RayBuster Keaton, Kenji FukusakuLarry CohenHoward HawksHenri-George Clouzot and Jerzy Skolimowski (twice!) and written historical primers on silent actingPre-Code Hollywood and the 3D avant-garde

So what do we need the money for?

Back when we were readying Alt Screen for launch, we couldn't be sure there was an audience for this kind of site. We wanted to get it up and running before investing too much money in the back end, so we put it together with the digital equivalent of duct tape. It's gotten increasingly buggier and harder to manage ever since.

We need to hire a professional web development team to build out a real database for the site — and, frankly, that's not cheap. After Kickstarter/Amazon fees and the material/shipping costs for our rewards, our $16k fundraising goal leaves us with more than $10k, just enough to overhaul the back end and put the site on a more sustainable technological footing.

Speaking of giving back...

Check out our rewards below. We scoured the film world and put together the best damn prize package we could! (See how much we appreciate your support?) We've got admission passes, annual memberships, magazine subscriptions, autographed film books and some pretty damn awesome fridge magnets that we designed ourselves.

And for our big-ticket backers, we've got beautiful movie posters (all vintage theatrical one-sheets) signed by the directors for Alt Screen!  We're very touched that Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Andrew Haigh, Aaron Katz, John Cameron Mitchell, Paul Schrader, Martin Scorsese, Guy Maddin, Paul Mazursky, Kelly Reichardt, Whit Stillman and Apichatpong Weerasethakul think we're worthy of support. We hope you will too.

— Sincerely, the Editors at Alt Screen
