This Kickstarter is to fund the production of the Volume 2 of the acclaimed fantasy comic HEATHEN created by me, Natasha Alterici. If you pledged to Volume 1, thank you and welcome back! If not, well then let me say "hello."
Okay, on with it.
HEATHEN is the story of a viking girl Aydis, who after being banished from her village for kissing another girl, sets out on a mission to challenge the god king Odin. In Volume 1 she teamed up with the cursed Valkyrie Brynhild, outwitted the shape-shifting Ruadan, and gained the favor of lustful god Freyja.
Now in Volume 2, Aydis prepares to cross the Northern sea, to reach the land of the gods. To do so, she'll need the help of a crew of badass lady pirates, vicious mermaids, and other immortals. Volume 2 will include issues 5-8, and is the second installment of the three volume series.
Reception of HEATHEN:
"With its powerful, feminist storylines and it’s evocative, haunting artwork, Heathen is a welcome addition to the canon of queer comics." -Chelsea Steiner, After Ellen
"...I want epics with female leads, and fortunately Heathen fulfills that desire in a big way, while also adding its own unique touch with themes that are as contemporary as they are timeless." -Ginnis Tonik, Women Write About Comics
"...everything about this comic is mystic and magical, but with the feeling, light-heartedness, comedy and social realism of classic fantasy." -Lauren McPhee, Need To Consume
"Fantastically written and beautifully drawn, Heathen honors its source mythology while also brilliantly turning it on its ear." -Geonn Cannon, two time GCLA winner for lesbian fiction
"It’s a sweeping Nordic fantasy, but it’s also a personal story about coming out and coming of age in a culture that doesn’t accept who you truly are. The intersection of those two narrative planes is what makes Heathen so engrossing..." -Oliver Sava, The AV Club
"Natasha Alterici is by far one of the most impressive voices in all of comics. Heathen is just the beginning." -Joshua Hale Fialkov, Writer of THE BUNKER, THE LIFE AFTER, I, VAMPIRE
"Give this one a pass and you’ll be missing one of the best new independent titles of the new year." -Matthew Burbridge, Comixology
Rewards will include your name being listed on the dedications page, digital copies of the completed issues as they become available (via Comixology or PDF), signed trade paperbacks with bonus art, signed 8 x 10 art prints, bronze viking shield pendant necklaces, and framed original drawings. I'll update this section with pictures of the actual rewards as they become available.
Potential stretch goals could include posters, stickers, temporary tattoos, all sorts of goodies can be added on. The biggest stretch goal would be to fund the third and final volume of the series. But that would mean more than doubling the goal, so like... a streeeetch goal.
Now, if you saw the first Kickstarter and are wondering why the hell this one has such a higher funding goal, let me explain. First of all, I didn't ask for enough the first time and have learned what fulfilling all the rewards actually costs. Second, and more importantly, I am hiring a letterer! One of the most frequent complaints about the first volume was my less-than-professional lettering skills. I hear you guys loud and clear, I am not a pro-letterer, I write and I draw, but making things readable I am not so good at. I have talked with pro Rachel Deering and she has agreed to letter the new issues as well as re-letter the old ones. So a huge part of the budget is to pay her. Everything else is to pay for printing, shipping, art supplies, my rent, and coffee.
Risks and challenges
I believe the challenges for this volume are significantly reduced from the first volume. I have a much more realistic budget. I have a whole year more experience as a professional comic maker which means I'm more productive than ever. And best of all, HEATHEN has a new publisher, Heavy Metal!!! What? Yes. So excited to take this title to the next level with this new publisher. Fear not, the good folks at Literati Press who initially helped launch this title are still intimately involved, they make up my editing team and are my personal support team, so we are in a much better position to get this thing done.
Granted I don't get eaten by a shark or stray cat or something, I am still 100% devoted to writing/drawing the story of my little lesbian viking. :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
