About this project
Radian connects to your camera via the USB or trigger port and is wirelessly programmed from your phone using Bluetooth. Radian makes shooting time lapses simple and intuitive so you can focus on your shot.
Radian can move as slowly as 20,000 discrete positions within 360 degrees. This level of angular resolution is critical for taking smooth motion time lapses and is a important component of Radian's mechanical design. While many devices can move your camera, few can move them this accurately.

With the simplicity of USB, you can set your Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO preferences all from your smartphone through Radian. Radian will update your camera to adapt to changes in light for a perfect time lapse every time.
The combined power of Bluetooth and USB means you'll be able to receive image thumbnails on your phone in real time to make sure you are getting the shot you want. If we reach our stretch goal, we'll take this even further with a compiled preview of your time lapse - all in real time!
Radian connects to cameras either through the USB Port or the external trigger port. Canon, Nikon and Sony cameras are able to use all of the features listed on this page because they plug into Radian via the USB Port.
Radian can also control your camera via the trigger port for other brands (Olympus, Fujifilm, etc) but a few less advanced features. To see an exact list please see the FAQ on Camera Compatibility.
With a single Radian, you can create beautiful motion time lapses whether you are shooting with an iPhone or a 5D Mark iii.
Grow With Radian and add more axes as your ambition grows. Start with a single Radian for panning motion, and add an L-bracket for vertical tilting, or a linear adaptor kit for sliding.
Program up to 3 Radians at once to effortlessly drive complex multi-axis motion shots. During your time lapse, the Radians will move in synchronization so that your camera is perfectly still while taking photos.
The Radian linear adaptor allows Radian (version 1 or 2) to motorize a linear dolly system. The linear adaptor kit is designed to mount your Radian quickly and securely to your favorite slider. With all-metal components, and weighing only 12 ounces, this adaptor kit won’t be slowing you down.
We are building adaptor kits for two of our favorite slider systems (StudioFX and Rhino Slider), but the mounting hardware itself is designed to be easily adapted for our DIYers as well. We love to see your home-built rigs!
Radian can also be programmed using Keyframes, an easy way to program non-constant motion.
With Radian's USB control of your camera, you can effortlessly take day to night time lapses without having to touch your camera. One of the big issues with taking Holy Grail timelapses is that you often will change your settings manually on your camera. This means while touching your camera you are exposing your timelapse to camera shake, which is especially an issue with motion timelapse. With Radian, you can either adjust your ISO or shutter wirelessly from your phone, or program the Radian the ramp ISO and shutter for you.
The original Radian was designed to make stunning motion time lapse accessible to photographers who didn't want to have to build their own motion systems. We built a precision motion device with extremely fine angular resolution (See Tech Specs above!) that also had an intuitive smart phone app. The combination of accuracy and ease made Radian popular among amateur photographers and pros alike. We are equally proud to say that Radian has been used by pros like BBC Earth and National Geographic and by hundreds of people just getting into photography.
Radian can be used as a move-shoot-move device for creating time lapse videos, or it can be controlled to create Panning or Tilting Video at speeds of up to 4.4 degrees/second.

We've partnered with Rhino and StudioFX to motorize their sliders, as well as to be able to offer them through this campaign.
Rhino Slider V1 : For its weight, we have yet to find anything that we like more for linear motion. They have a few options and lengths and you can check them out at rhinocameragear.com
Kenley Sliders : These sliders are identical to the Studio FX sliders, but are distributed by a different company in Europe. So we cannot offer them through that campaign, but they can be purchased on European amazon sites by searching for "Kenley Professionnel Slider"
Both of our slider partners have the above sliders for sale now and you are welcome to purchase them directly so that you can start playing right away. Alternatively, when you make your pledge, you can order your slider by adding the amount indicated following the instructions below. We will ship your slider before the 4th of July!
Due to the large number of slider options, we are not creating tiers for each slider type. Instead, if you would like to add a slider to any tier above, just add the amount listed in blue below to your pledge and check which slider option you would like when we send out a backer survey. Slider shipping is included in the below prices.
This feature will allow you to preview your time lapse on your smartphone- while your time lapse is being shot. Sometimes it is hard to imagine how everything will look in your final time lapse, and traditionally you won’t know how a shot went until you are back home on your computer. If your shot didn't come out, it is then too late to do anything about it. With time lapse preview you can see how things are looking mid-shoot and change your settings on the fly if needed, or just get excited about what the final cut is going to look like.
We’ve already figured out how to get image thumbnails on your phone, but doing it in the background as each photo is taken, and compiling the footage on your phone, will be significantly more difficult and will require some creativity to get it to work. It will require a good bit of extra time from the existing team, as well as bringing on another developer, but we would love to do it if we can hit our stretch goal!
We launched the first Radian here on Kickstarter in 2012. Radian was designed to take stunning panning and tilting time lapses and connected to your camera via the trigger port. Radian was extremely well received and has even been used in features such as BBC Earth and Yosemite HD II.
Since launching the original Radian, we've taken to time to talk with and get feedback from our backers and other supporters, and started tinkering with some new ideas: namely Bluetooth Wireless, USB Camera Control, and the possilbity of using Radian for linear motion.
We’ve been working on Radian 2 for nearly a year now meticulously testing and refining its new features and functionality. You have been in mind every step of the way so that even with expanded features and creative control, Radian will still feel simple and intuitive. We went back to the drawing board and overhauled the App's interface, revamped our electronics, and revised our linear slider adaptor to something we were truly excited about.
As a team, we've had interesting history navigating school, work and keeping up with rent. It all started in 2012 when Kris had the need for a motion time lapse device and was disappointed with what was available. Kris teamed up with his friends and roommates Kevin, Marcus and Steve to create the first Radian Kickstarter campaign. After delivering on Kickstarter and running out of Radian stock, the team put Radian sales on pause as some of the team moved to other jobs to keep up with bills as others finished up school.
In 2013, Steve teamed up with Greg to test the idea of a new stationary timelapse device and launched Michron on Kickstarter. They successfully delivered 4500 Michrons two weeks ahead of schedule in early 2014. With renewed momentum, we started a new manufacturing run of Radians, brought Greg and Michron onto the team, and started tinkering with some new product ideas. In the fall, Greg took a leave of absence from graduate school and Steve passed on other more secure job opportunities to take lead on design and engineering. We committed to building a "skies the limit" product and are now back on Kickstarter to launch Radian 2.
Risks and challenges
As with any physical product, there are a huge number of tasks and hurdles that need to be completed. However, we have a focused team that has delivered 2 Kickstarter projects already. We were 1 month late delivering the first Radian, but we learned our lesson and delivered Michrons to backers a few weeks early on our second campaign!
We take pride in being open with our backers and have a proven history of actually being transparent. We understand that regular communication is key, whether things are going great, or not so well. We also love this work, and we'll do our best to make this process educational and entertaining for you as well.
