About this project
By now, many of you know who I am, but for those who don't, allow me to introduce myself. I am The Impossible Winterbourne - Old World Gentleman, SteamBot Creator, and Man About Town! I have spent some time over the last few years installing robotic creations around the country (and Canada, and London, and Mexico). Now i have a new project - a project I have worked very hard hard on, but can't complete on my own.
I call it "The AlphaBots!" It is a fully illustrated alphabetical journey through several (twenty-six to be exact) robotic creations of my workshop. Its whimsical characters and bright colors are guaranteed to capture the attention of children, but the level of art and detail can be appreciated by all! It is more than just a children's book. It is a labor of love, and a work of art. The final book will be a 11" x 11" full color 64 page hardcover.
The book is complete, and ready to go to press, and that is where you come in! I have found, over my journey of creating this book, that publishing is not easy, nor is it inexpensive! So I have turned to the Kickstarter community and my handful of loyal followers to help me reach my publishing goal. I do not, however, intend for you to help me out without receiving something special in return. Every donation tier comes with something made by me that you cannot get anywhere else!
Let's join together to take "The AlphaBots" from impossible to possible!
The Story Behind The AlphaBots
About seven years ago, I needed a new outlet for my artistic endeavors. I had just quit my dead end job, and was feeling a bit stagnate in my art career. I'll give credit where it is due, and confess to you that I had just seen "Exit Through the Gift Shop" in the theatre, and was inspired to take my life in a new direction. And so I did. I started making cardboard robots and putting them on buildings in the middle of the night. This was in Denver, CO. The robots (or SteamBots as I called them) got the attention of one of Denver's papers - The Westword, and they did a story on me which lead to the creation of more cardboard SteamBots. At the same time I started making sculptural work that I could install on buildings and trees. I used a variety of faces and robot sculpts, and started placing them where I thought they fit. I would make them during the day, and at night my partner Robot and I would go about placing them throughout the city. One thing lead to another, and I found myself creating artwork and sculptural elements for a stage used by a touring vaudeville circus act. That year I started touring the country with them. Everywhere we went, I installed my faces and robots. Soon my work could be seen from San Francisco to New York, and nearly every major city in the U.S. When my time with the circus ended, my work on The AlphaBots began.
I spent the better part of a year drawing all the robots in the book, refining the sketches, and getting the story just right. It took a while to decide what robot worked best with what letter, and figuring out how to make it all rhyme and flow together. At this point, Robot and I moved back to Chicago - a city I still consider very much my home base. Here I worked for another good long while coloring the robots on the computer, and building their environments. In the evenings and weekends, Robot and I would decorate the city with faces and SteamBots, and during the day I worked on the book. In the middle my time in Chicago my father fell ill. Once again, Robot and I found ourselves moving across the country. This time to Austin, TX to be with my father. Work on The AlphaBots progressed in Austin, but at a slower pace. I finished the book in the spring of 2015, and began the daunting task of looking for a publisher. Then in March of last year I lost my father, and for a long while all progress stopped, and not just on the book. For a while I did not feel like doing much at all. So for a long time I didn't. As time passed, however, I began to look more at different publishing routes, and found one that worked for me. It does happen to be an author funded route, however, and that is the reason for my Kickstarter project. On April 22nd Art on 5th Gallery in Austin, TX hosted a launch party and book reading for The AlphaBots where I displayed steampunk robot sculptures and artwork from the book. I guess we will see how the rest of the story unfolds!

Risks and challenges
I have set the ship date of this project to be November of this year, getting all items into your hands just in time for the Holidays (Christmas, Krampusnacht, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.). As anyone who has lived long enough knows, sometimes life has a way of derailing plans. Publishing the book could take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months, so there is a bit of unpredictability there, BUT all other gifts are made by me, and I will start shipping those out to you as soon as "The AlphaBots" is funded.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
