In October 2012 I started a project in Wellington, New Zealand. A venue called Puppies which was to be the vehicle for a bunch of experiments of mine within the live music scene. Most notably the bar became known for being the first venue of its kind to advertise, in advance, playing times and strictly adhere to them, something that till then was sorely lacking in the New Zealand music scene – but much more than that, there were a ton of other just as revolutionary/ridiculous ideas happening in the background.
In June 2014 I will close Puppies and complete the experiments along with publishing a book “The problem with music in New Zealand, how we can fix it and why I started and ran Puppies” (Inspired by Steve Albini’s legendary essay “The Problem with Music”).
I want the venue to go out the way it deserves and have launched this Kickstarter campaign to help that happen. Along with the release of the book detailing why I started Puppies, I want to create a beautiful artifact to live on past the short lifespan of the venue, an awesomely packaged double vinyl collection which will feature tracks from a selection of the amazing artists who have played at Puppies over the past two years, accompanied with a booklet of anecdotes and photographs - something that those who will miss Puppies as much as I will appreciate, and those who never got to come along will enjoy reading about.
Puppies will close on the weekend of June 20/21 with a blowout party, an un-announced line-up and amazing few nights. To get tickets you’ll need to use Kickstarter and I’m hoping that while you do, you might be keen to pre-order a copy of the book, or the record.
The money I'm seeking may seem a large amount but it's actually only enough to really get the project happening. The costs of this whole project: The mastering, cutting and freight of the LPs from the US, plus packaging. Printing of the books (plus LP booklet) plus all the associated costs of the final weekend of shows including production costs and artist fees etc are huge, but its a project I'm willing to take on anyway - I'm just hoping that this campaign can take away some of the risk. Please pledge what you can, the more money the project gets in, over and above the target, the more elaborate I can be with everything - for example my ideal packaging scenario alone for just the vinyl costs over $3000.
Risks and challenges
Having published many books before and completed a vinyl release from conception through production and hosted a ton of parties before, I see no potential problems arising with this project, other than unforseen delays in the vinyl manufacture process, touch wood.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
