The fourth installment of Grady Gillan's black & white photo zine: capturing the beautiful in the ordinary, and vice versa since 2010.
Aloha Friday is a blog you can hold.
An on-going project/series, Aloha Friday is Grady Gillan's bi-annual zine comprised of original photos shot on black and white film and laser printed in a 40-page 8.5" x 7" booklet.
Issue #1 was released in July 2010, issue #2 was released in February 2011, and issue #3 saw an October 2011 release-- initial runs of all three issues sold out; you may purchase reprints here.
Aloha Friday #4 is slated for a June 2012 release. A small release party will be held but all donors of $7 or more will get an advance copy. All funds will go towards printing and shipping costs with any additional funds going towards more film and processing.
Included among the rewards for this project are copies of a one-off limited edition zine entitled WILDEST HOGS. Wildest Hogs is the same size, format, and number of pages as Aloha Friday, but is 100% photos taken during a week-long motorcycle trip that four best friends took through Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary in September 2011. If Aloha Friday is Grady's journal, Wildest Hogs is a page in his diary. A focused peek at four young men on vacation together, Wildest Hogs shares Aloha Friday's whimsical view of the world. Wildest Hogs will be limited to 75 copies only.
Here's what people had to say about the first three:
"Pages that unfold as an of-the-moment narrative that’s both immediate and timeless, ambiguous and familiar, thoughtless and memorable, all shot with a breezy stolidity that remains true to the zine’s slice-of-life namesake."- Honolulu Weekly
"Gillan's tightly curated selections, which were, I imagine, pulled from hundreds of photographs, stun."- Department of Public Works
"Aloha Friday is a tangible document that celebrates the mediocre, the tawdry and the occasional beauty that surrounds us." - Honolulu Star Advertiser
