It's the summer of 1969 in Bethel, New York. Over 400,000 people are gathered to take part in the most groundbreaking music festival of all time. But while the musicians are rocking out on stage, zombies are breaking out in the audience--and only a handful of people can tell the difference between the shambling hippies and the mindless undead!
This volume collects issues 1–8 of Bruce Worden's comic book series, Woodstalk: 3 Days of Peace, Music, and Zombies. Together, it details the harrowing (and hilarious) events of the first day of the concert, along with its original line-up: from Richie Havens to Joan Baez. Our Kickstarter campaign will help bring this 168-page, black-and-white, softcover collection to life!
P R A I S E F O R W O O D S T A L K :
"The first comic book ever to tell the true story of what happened that weekend...Woodstalk is one of those rarities in the world of comic book rock'n'roll stories. One that you will actually want to read." - Goldmine Magazine
"Good music-based comics are something of a rarity, but this is one of those which is just surreal and irreverent enough to break that mould." - Rock Society Magazine
"A fun, creative story that takes an out-of-left field premise (zombies meet hippies) and knocks it out of the park." - Rob Salkowitz, author of Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture
The Zombies: the British Invasion band known best for their song "Time of the Season." By Woodstalk they had already broken up; but studio legal troubles bring them back together for one last score at the biggest concert of the decade. If only they can convince the festival to let them play...
Sunshine & Starlight: a hippie couple who've come to Woodstalk for two reasons: to give birth to their lovechild at what they thought would be their cultural mecca, and to sell a duffel bag full of pot to start their new family off on the right foot.
Fitz: an uptight U.S. Marine on shore leave from Vietnam. This concert is definitely not his scene, but two old friends needed a ride, so here he is. When those friends get turned into zombies, his sense of duty kicks in, big-time.
Needless to say, nothing really goes as planned for any of them at the start of the concert. But, thankfully, they all have the presence of mind to recognize something is going horribly wrong in the audience, and it's up to them alone to fix it.
Bruce Worden (Goodnight, Keith Moon; Shoppers Unknown) is a scientific illustrator by day, comic creator by night. Not yet born at the time of Woodstock, he still developed a fascination with the music of that era, which informs much of his work. He lives with his wife, son, and record collection in Ann Arbor, MI and lurks online at sketchsketchsketch.com. You can also find him on Twitter, Facebook, and Ello!
The money you pledge will all go directly into the production and shipping of the book and rewards. We're using trusted vendors, including Indiana-based Rink Printing Company.
Risks and challenges
This is Little Red Bird's fifth Kickstarter project. We've had successful campaigns for two comics, an art book, and a comic anthology, and now we're excited to have Bruce join the LRB family! His amazing art is ready to go, so we risk very few delays. We'll keep you posted via backer updates should anything arise; but we're confident that, if we reach our goal, Woodstalk WILL become a reality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
