What is it?
The first volume of Tales Untold came together almost by accident. As I worked on my storytelling show Poison Apples & Pretty Witches, I would occasionally land on a story idea that just didn't fit the voice or format of my show. I'd write the story anyway, then leave it to languish on my hard drive. Eventually I realized that it was probably worth collecting those stories and printing them in a book. There weren't quite enough tales to make a reasonable page count, so I turned to author Micah Edwards (who just happens to be my husband) for a few additional stories to flesh out the book. Illustrated by my friend and burlesque director Viktor Devonne, the first volume was modestly but successfully funded and continues to sell well at my show.
Like its predecessor, Tales Untold vol. II is a collection of dark and alternative fairy tales penned by myself, Lilith Lore, and Micah Edwards. For this new volume, however, we're bringing in the talented Russell Altizer to illustrate. His work can be seen in the video above, as well as the link below. But please also enjoy his depiction of yours truly as a My Little Pony / Thestral.
What will this money go toward?
- Approximately $300 is going to our illustrator, for his time and talent.
- 10% of the funds raised will go straight to Kickstarter so they can continue to run this fabulous crowd sourcing website.
- Another $150 will be spent on creating bookmarks and postcard-sized magnets
- Approximately $300 will go toward printing this book, and any copies of Tales Untold vol. I, needed for rewards.
- The remaining funds will go toward shipping & fulfillment (including shipping materials, postage, and potentially bribing my friend with pizza to help me stuff envelopes).
These numbers may change a little, depending on exactly how many backers I get, and which rewards are most popular. I've also allowed myself a small cushion, in case I've badly under estimated the weight of the books (and therefore shipping costs), or anything like that.

Risks and challenges
Although the stories for the book are already written, they still need to be proofed and edited by a third party. I have several qualified friends who have helped in the past, but there is always a chance that this process will take longer than I have allowed for, due to unforeseen life events.
Similarly, the illustrations for this book are not yet finished. In my experience, Russell Altizer is an excellent and speedy artist, but as with any part-time passion or project, sometimes other things take priority.
Although I have allowed plenty of time for fulfillment, there is always the risk that his artistic production will take longer than expected, due to unforeseen events with day jobs, family, etc.
As with any unexpected issues, the best I can do is promise to communicate clearly about any delays, and take any available steps to correct the problem.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
