Patema Inverted was released in 2013 and, before it even hit Japanese cinemas, it had already won the Judges AND Audience awards at Scotland Loves Anime and been screened out of competition at Annecy. A winning trend that has continued with it's winning an Excellence Award in the Japanese Media Arts festival this year.
Directed by Yasuhiro Yoshiura, director of the acclaimed Time of Eve, and Pale Cocoon, Patema Inverted is a rare gem that's a pleasure to watch both on the big and small screens. With much critical acclaim, Patema Inverted will be released worldwide for home video.
For a film of this high quality - both visually and narratively - there are so many ways to create a deluxe edition. This Kickstarter campaign will allow us to go above and beyond even our usual quality in order to give fans in the UK the definitive edition of the film - a cut above even our normal high quality of release!
In short - this campaign will allow us to arrange and package Patema Inverted in the best possible way, which would not usually be commercially viable. It will also give YOU the chance to own the title before it hits general retail!
“BECAUSE OF THE GREAT CHANGE, THE SINNERS FELL INTO THE SKY…”
Patema has lived her whole life underground. Following a catastrophic attempt to harness alternative power sources, her community were driven to settle in a dark, cramped network of tunnels below ground. She roams them by torchlight, dreaming of adventures on the surface.
Age does not fit in comfortably in school or society as a whole. The world he lives in is known as ‘Aiga’, controlled by the tyrant Izamura’s family for generations. The city at the centre of the kingdom is dominated by a massive ‘Control Tower’ with a vast wasteland lurking on the horizon.
Together the pair are about to be pulled into something much bigger that will turn their worlds on their heads…
Unlike our previous Kickstarter, this isn't a plea to help get an unnoticed or commercially difficult film to market. Instead, we're trying to create a new breed of product that goes above and beyond even our regular collector's format.
The main risk of doing this, is that this kind of release would be simply beyond what is reasonable to just "put up on Amazon and see if it works". Our aspirations for this title go well beyond that.
If we were to release the definitive edition normally, i.e. via Amazon or other retailers immediately, the cost of the release would need to be about £84.99. That is simply too high, especially if we want to get this edition into the hands of as many fans as possible at a reasonable price point!
That's why we are proposing a 1,500 unit print run, every edition numbered, exclusive to Kickstarter with any remaining units leftover to be sold at a higher price via retail at a later date (SRP of £84.99).
In addition, we're trialling a new model of release that means if you support the Kickstarter for the amaray or regular collector's combi-packs, you'll get it before it hits retailers!
So, if you support our attempt to make a cool release early you get your copy early!
Transparency is key and as always Anime Limited's founder Andrew Partridge is very keen on letting you know where the money is goingFor those who backed our Mai Mai Miracle Kickstarter, some of the details will be familiar but for posterity's sake, here's what the Kickstarter money is going to be used for :
50% of all money in - Basic out-of-pocket costs such as production of the collector's edition (authoring, translation, material access, replication, packaging, shipping and fulfilment), and a flat fee of £2,500 to cover man-power over production at likely 150+ hrs.
40% - Split between creation of extras for the Kickstarter and any extras made as part of the Kickstarter Crowd Production process- similar to what we did with the Mai Mai Miracle release.
10% + 20p per backer goes to Kickstarter - Between the 5% fee that keeps them going to enable more awesome payments, payment processing fees & tax.
We Kickstart projects a lot (check our profile if you're curious or follow us to see what we end up supporting usually). And to be honest, we're pretty sick of stretch goals dictated by the companies in question. We prefer to get the input of backers and cater to their preferences - within reason of course - sadly, no unicorns as stretch goals.
None of the money from the Kickstarter will be used to acquire the rights - either for the art book or film.
Unlike our previous Kickstarter, where the packaging, design, rewards design etc were more hypothetical, we believe you deserve a fair look at what we have in mind this time before you commit your hard earned cash for this! And more importantly, this time we can. Here are the key highlights in the digital and physical reward tiers:
#1: DIGITAL REWARDS:
While you can expect some beautiful wallpapers arranged by our in-house artist, the key digital extras to note are the digital booklet and the video extras.
We went out of our way to create a bunch of extras for Patema Inverted including some very neat press notes made up by the ever-talented Jonathan Clements. They will be made available as a bonus to Kickstarter backers pledging from £10 upwards.
In terms of video extras, we have 30 minutes of bonus material recorded in London that we'll be sharing directly with backers! We're looking to include it on the home video too of course.
#2 REGULAR AMARAY COMBI-PACK:
This one is self explanatory really - it's an amaray combi-pack with Blu-Ray and DVD and a reversible clean cover! We'll ship out a Kickstarter exclusive postcard using our quad poster artwork too.
Kickstarter backers will get this before it hits retailers like Amazon, Play, Zavvi etc.
Retail price: £24.99
#3 Collector's Edition
People should be no strangers to the Anime Limited release model now - our Collector's edition for the film mirrors that of the Tiger & Bunny: The Beginning one - which is to say:
- Rigid slipcase
- DVD + BD combi in digipack
- 48 page booklet included: We'll be translating the booklet in the Japanese Collector's edition.
Kickstarter backers will get this before it hits retailers like Amazon, Play, Zavvi etc.
Retail price: £34.99
#4 Ultimate Edition
This is our crowning achievement - we've actually gone and licensed the official design works, which allows us to create an Ultimate Edition of the film. That's not all though, below is a list of what you get in this edition:
- Ultimate Edition box, with custom digipack to hold the DVD and Blu-Ray and any other goodies produced as part of the Kickstarter.
- A numbered art card certifying the release.
- The visual fan guide (full of art, settings & design notes) - translated into English for the first time.
- A replica of Lagos' letter from Patema Inverted (it's spoilery so we can't tell you more now ;)).
- Both BD and DVD discs
Some of the stretch goals will probably centre around adding more to this as well - so watch this space!
If there are any units of the Ultimate Edition remaining after all Kickstarter orders are fulfilled, the remainders will be made available on our online store only after backers receive their copies.
Suggested Retail Price: £84.99
About The Official Design Works:
We're very proud of this - it is an artbook but it includes so much more than just the artwork. The official design works includes such gems as initial concepts for Patema, Age and the rest of the cast as well as the worlds of Patema and Age! This kind of access to information and artwork at such varying stages in the design process is rarely seen and not something to be missed!
Clocking in at 136 pages long, we'll be translating and printing the whole thing for this release. You can see a neat review of the Japanese version over on Parka Blogs for more details too!
This will be only available within the ultimate edition of Patema Inverted, the translated version is currently not planned for a general release beyond this.
#5 The Quad Poster
Loved by people around the world, our designer's choice of layout for the quad poster is incredible! We're offering fans the chance to get a copy of it at 30" x 40" as part of this Kickstarter! Available only on the £75 tier with the Ultimate Edition, it is a reward not to be missed!
This will not be sold outside of the Anime Limited Kickstarter.
Born 1980. Majoring in Design at the Kyushu Institute of Design (now Kyushu University School of Design), he began making animations while a student, and graduated in 2003. Working freelance on short animations, he released his first DVD animation, Pale Cocoon, in January 2006.
Time of Eve, a six-part series he created, wrote, and directed, was shown over the internet between August and September 2009, and won the Original Video Animations category prize at the 9th Tokyo Anime Awards in 2010 . On Saturday, March 6th, 2010, the first season premiered as a feature-length film at Tokyo’s Ikebukuro Theater Dia and other locations, setting an attendance record for the reopened cinema, and going on to a long run there.
The theatrical feature was rated PG by the BBFC and we're very happy to say audiences of all ages have enjoyed it when screened so far. Yoshiura-san himself attended a screening at the Edinburgh Filmhouse where the audience was a mix of regular cinema goers and parents with their kids. It's safe to say that they all left pretty happy!
Good question! We're already a good way into production including the dub with NYAV Post so we're aiming for Kickstarter backers to get their copies by the end of September - namely under a year after it screened in the UK first!
We are already planning a collector's edition release of this film similar to our previous releases. However, with your help and our imagination and aspirations, we want to take this about 9 steps further and really push the boat out on an Ultimate Edition of Patema Inverted - something unique to the UK, to this Kickstarter and just plain worth it. Will you help us make our crazy, fevered plans a reality?
Risks and challenges
We've sharpened our teeth on the last year preparing top notch home entertainment titles so the only risk is that we need the support of you, the backers to make this kind of crazily high quality release possible.
Most anime films never receive this level of love as it's easier to recoup the money on TV series - so we're hoping a bunch of you will join us for the ride!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
