"[Temujin]'s got all the makings of an epic...[I]t looks like her work has paid off, as the concept art for the book appears to charge off the page. We're really looking forward to seeing Temujin become a reality." Official Kickstarter Blog
"Temujin is what makes Kickstarter so unique and well-rounded in their comic book section. A+ artwork and one of the most refreshing projects I have seen in the last year." Henry Barajas of The Beat
HOW IT BEGAN
It began August of 2011, when I knew I wanted to create something based on history, but I had no clue of what. I decided to list historical figures of whom I had very little knowledge. Genghis Khan stuck out to me the most because I first learned that Genghis Khan wasn't his real name, but Temujin was. It felt like I discovered a whole new person. I dug more into the research of his childhood, his mother, and the respect he gained from his skills as a leader and warrior. I wanted to know what happened in his life that made him one of the most influential, well-known figures in history to this day. Visual storytelling has always been a passion of mine, and I realized that Temujin's story is an exciting one I want to tell through a graphic novel.
WHAT IT BECAME
When I started my research on Temujin, I (of course) began at his childhood. I always believe that people become the way they are from the experiences they gain growing up. The story I tell in the preview comic (one of the rewards listed) is one of the most important events in Temujin's life. His first recorded kill in history is his half-brother, ironically for the survival of his family. It clearly foreshadows him becoming the kind of leader who would do anything to protect his family and soldiers. This preview comic is the teaser for the overall story arc I want to create for the graphic novel.
If this Kickstarter is successful, I plan on continuing Temujin's story with the one that led him to become Genghis Khan.
It's the story that begins in his childhood, when he befriends Jamukha. Their friendship was sealed with blood, becoming blood brothers from then on. As they grew older and more involved in Mongolian political affairs, Jamukha's jealousy of Temujin grew and created tension between the blood brothers. So much, it became one the most important battles for Temujin, paving the path for him to become the greatest leader in the world and earn the title, "Genghis Khan". I aim to have the 138-page, hardcover, full-color paged graphic novel completed by winter of 2013.
Some of the rewards for this Kickstarter include:
- the password to access the behind-the-scenes blog:
- original art from Temujin development
- Signed original sketches from Temujin
- 7" x 10" copy of the preview comic (in color)
You can even get first dibs on the hardcover graphic novel, NOW with additional pages of Temujin concept art!
Taking account of the processing fees, printing and shipping costs (especially if shipping internationally), every donation counts! It'll help me give you guys a top-of-the-line graphic novel. More details on the prizes are listed on the right!
Risks and challenges
To have the funds needed for making this the most extensive, high-quality graphic novel is what you guys deserve. I planned on making it a softcover, black and white book, but if there's enough money raised, I'd love to have the book be a hardcover AND in color.
Another challenge with this project (probably the most important) is the time invested in working on the graphic novel. As everyone knows, life can get in the way of putting in the time needed for a project as big as this. I'll be working on the graphic novel as I live my life as a freelance artist. It's possible that other jobs can come up and I might have to say "I can't work on Temujin until tomorrow". There are only so many hours in the day and my brain needs some amount of sleep here and there. Whoever says putting together a graphic novel is easy (especially alone) is lying.
The thing about this project is I've never treated it as something I want to push aside, even when I reach the point of frustration. From the beginning, putting together this story and making the art around it became a part of my everyday life. It's not just making this book for my own amusement, but making something that others can always enjoy. It's the thought of creating a graphic novel worth remembering and telling others about that makes me never want to give up. That's why documenting the graphic novel development is so important...because you'll see what it takes to make something you love come to life.
I'll do everything I can to make this the best graphic novel about Temujin you've ever seen and the only one you'll ever want to read. I will sacrifice all the time, energy, and money I can to make that happen. Whether this Kickstarter succeeds or not, this book will exist. It's how well the book is made, how soon it will be completed, and having YOUR support, that drives me and wants this campaign to succeed so much.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
To put it simply, the preview comic serves as a teaser to what the graphic novel could have the full potential of looking like (in that if I raised enough, the graphic novel will have full color pages). Plot-wise, as addressed in the video and in the "What It Became" section, the preview comic is about a particular event in Temujin's childhood. It's an important event because it shows early on in his childhood what kind of leader he later becomes.
The plot of the graphic novel is explained in the "Goals" section of the project, about the strained friendship with his blood brother Jamukha and how it lead to the birth of Genghis Khan.
The script is complete and the pages of the graphic novel already thumbnailed! The amount of success of the Kickstarter campaign will determine more about the pages being either black and white or in full color. The "Temujin: Progression" blog documents the completion of the final pages of the graphic novel. It will be published in December of 2013, NOT December of this year like the other items of the rewards.
What if I want an alternate version of the reward or an additional reward? Eg. the graphic novel alone, the graphic novel AND the preview comic, more original art included?
That all relies on the amount of pledges for the Kickstarter. The target goal already takes into account the printing costs of the preview comics, the funds needed for the graphic novel printing, and supplies for the other items of the rewards (the original art, other prints, mounting, framing). If people add more to their pledges in order to have additional items, I may consider that, it's just a matter of not overcomplicating the rewards. As mentioned, depending on the funds, I will keep people updated on whether I can add more to certain pledges or not.
