About this project
Girl Sex 101 is a road trip in a book! Combining fiction & comics with solid sex-education, Girl Sex 101 does what no sex-ed book has done before.
A collaboration between author and sex-educator Allison Moon (the Tales of the Pack novels about lesbian werewolves) and artist kd diamond (founder & editor-in-chief of Salacious Magazine) Girl Sex 101 is loaded with fun, color illustrations and entertaining stories that offer far more than the standard sex-ed fare.
Girl Sex 101 features over 14 sexy and educational stories featuring our diverse cast of characters that illustrate the rest of the info in the chapter. For example, in the first chapter, Layla has a hard time speaking up about what she likes in bed with a hot femme she picks up. Later on, Jamie finds herself in bed with a trans guy and doesn't quite know how to ask him about his body. Meanwhile, Layla has to figure out how to communicate about her STI status with a new flame, while Jamie navigates fooling around with an old crush with a disability. There's plenty of fuel for your own girl sex tanks!
Girl Sex 101 presents feminist, pleasure-positive, and consent-oriented sex education to help women of all orientations and experience levels understand their bodies and those of their partners.
And we need your help! If we don't hit our funding goal, we don't get any of it.
Girl Sex 101 is a collaborative effort of over 15 independent educators and artists, featuring fun & informative guest viewpoints by sex-ed superstars:
Sophia St. James
Sex Nerd Sandra
There's a lot of sexual information available on the web and in books, but precious little of this is specific to lesbian, bisexual, and queer women. Some of the books are outdated or use language that many of us find alienating. Girl Sex 101 fills a void in the market: an accessible, funny, and info-packed book that's both easy to read and good for women of all experience levels.
Allison is the author of the Tales of the Pack series about lesbian werewolves. Last year, she successfully Kickstarted the 2nd in the series, Hungry Ghost. She was a 2011 Lambda Literary Emerging LGBT Authors Fellow. She's a passionate advocate for independent artists and the democratization of publishing tools. She's also a sex educator who has presented her workshops (including Girl Sex 101) to thousands of people around the US and Canada.
kd diamond created the queer feminist sex magazine, Salacious and has had comic-art published in Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation, Tristan Taormino's The Secrets of Great G-Spot Orgasms and Female Ejaculation: The Best Positions and Latest Techniques for Creating Powerful, Long-Lasting, Full-Body Orgasms. Diamond’s illustrations are also featured in The Ultimate Guide to Kink: BDSM, Role Play and the Erotic Edge (ed. Tristan Taormino, Cleis Press).
"Okay, but why?"
Allison and kd firmly believe that sex is a Good Thing and everyone should learn how it works. Sexual health is hugely important to overall health, but most American kids are lucky to even get basic pregnancy prevention sex ed in school. Forget about the queer kids. And definitely forget about pleasure. Allison wanted to make a book that would be both info-packed and fun to read. There's no talk of goddesses or impenetrable latin terms here. This book is by women for women and the people who love them. Allison and kd both had to learn about girl sex the hard way, and they really would have liked a book like Girl Sex 101 when they were younger.
"Is Girl Sex 101 trans-inclusive?"
YES! We devote page time to both identity and trans sex. We talk a lot about concepts that are relevant to folks of all genders and body types, and we do address concerns specific to trans women with penises (and their associated analogues). Girl Sex 101 includes scenic viewpoints from noted trans and genderqueer activists Julia Serano, Ignacio Rivera, Mira Bellwether, and Jiz Lee.
"So, what's the story?"
Jamie and her ex Layla have to drive Layla's van, "Olive the Olvlov of Love" from Vancouver to San Diego, and they get into some sexy adventures along the way.
"Is Girl Sex 101 appropriate for my teenager?"
Girl Sex 101 includes frank talk and images of bodies and pleasure. It's not porn, but it's pretty sexy. Everyone should know how their bodies work, how to communicate with their partner(s) and how to know when something isn't right. Allison believes this kind of education should start as soon as your kid expresses curiosity about these topics. And your kids should definitely learn about consent before they start dating. It's going to be up to you whether or not your kid is ready for this book, but it may help broach the subject with them.
"What if I'm straight? What if I'm a guy?"
Awesome! Allison's Girl Sex 101 workshop was originally designed for bicurious, newly-out lesbians, and shy women, and it expanded from there. People of all genders, ages, and identities have taken the workshop. We don't care how you identify. We still think you'll get some good info out of it.
"Why 'Girl Sex 101?' Isn't that title kinda patronizing and gender-normative?"
As Allison says, "Not all girls have vulvas and not all vulvas have girls." That said, we want this book to be non-intimidating and good for women of all ages and experience levels, hence a slightly cheeky title.
"Where's the money go?"
This project is a pretty big endeavor, hence the big budget. Most of the money raised will go directly to the artists who are making Girl Sex 101 a reality. This includes all of the sexperts, kd for her drawings, our layout person, editor, copy editor, and proofreader. The rest goes to the hard costs like printing and shipping the books and rewards.
"And what if you raise more than $13.5K?"
First of all, kd and I will do a happy dance. We might even videotape it for you.
Then, we have some push goals:
At $15,000 all of the contributors get an extra $50 and we'll be able to print more copies.
At $20,000 we'll guarantee Girl Sex 201 will happen. (Including more advanced topics like kink, non-monogamy, fisting, and more)
At $35,000 Allison and kd will go on a road trip following the story's same route from Vancouver to San Diego, and we'll film the Girl Sex 101 DOCUMENTARY with interviews with queer women we meet along the way.

Risks and challenges
Both Allison and kd are Kickstarter veterans, and they're seasoned pros at creating and delivering quality content. We know how hard it can be to work on collaborative creative projects on a deadline.
Allison's written much of the book already, and many of kd's illustrations are just waiting to be placed on the page. This book is definitely happening.
That said, your support is ESSENTIAL to our success. I don't have the power or the funds to pay all the artists and educators involved. And I strongly believe that all indie artists deserve to be paid for their time. Should we fail to reach our goal, I will fundraise in other ways, most likely taking out hefty loans. I'd rather not do that, though, so your help is *very* appreciated.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
