About

Our Passion Project: "100 Startups in 100 Days"

It's the middle of the night...3 a.m....and you're still awake—thinking about the company you founded. 'If only I could get...[insert big break here]."

Maybe it's an entrepreneurial friend or family member...and you're hoping for that break for them...it's all they need.

What if there was a media company with the SOLE PURPOSE of giving that break? Helping introduce innovative companies and founders through video storytelling to the largest single market in the world: New York.

We're AlleyWire. We're not big box media—we cover innovation. So far, we've focused on stories within NYC. Now, over the next 100 days, we want to give 100 startups outside NYC their chance to tell their story to investors, customers and centers of influence in the five boroughs.

Together, we can give 100 of the most innovative companies and founders the chance they deserve.

AlleyWire Is:

1) A video-centered media company focused on telling the stories of the most innovative people, companies and events that affect New York and New Yorkers

2) A team of more than 40 professional correspondents, producers, editors and videographers with deep media and journalism backgrounds supporting the creative economy and startups/innovators of NYC and beyond

3) Our mission is to "inform and inspire," and to tell stories for an audience outside the startup and investor community—we tell stories for the end-user, and everyone out there that can "Live Innovatively" from the coverage we provide—to find the next big idea and keep you up to date on the latest in NYC innovation

4) Made in NY! and darn proud of it (currently being incubated in the IFP Made in NY Media Center)

5) Focused on producing high-quality, editorially-driven, original content that companies can be proud to share — looking to expand into more cities shortly (Boston, DC, London, SF, Austin, Rio, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Delhi, etc.)

...help support us in our work with the innovation and creative community.

Hi Kickstarter,

I'm Neil St. Clair, founding correspondent of AlleyWire. We're so excited to announce our "100 Startups in 100 Days" (100s/100d) Kickstarter special project.

More About Our Project: "100 Startups in 100 Days"

"With your help, we'll cover 100 startups and innovators in a little more than 3 months—all from outside NYC— looking for their chance in the New York market."

We also pledge that 10% of the stories we cover will be for our AlleyWire Inspire series, which focuses exclusively on innovative non-profit, volunteer or charitable ventures.

AW Inspire is in the process of producing its first segment on the "Hiring our Heroes" project, which has an amazing piece of innovation that helps translate military work experience into civilian resumes.

Our 100s/100d project filming will commence around April 1 and run through July.

Why Do This?

Because making it in New York is damn difficult. But if you can make it here...well, you know the rest.

There are so many amazing products, services and people out there trying to get a bite of the Big Apple, and without the right support and wide-cast introductions to users, many are doomed to fail.

That's not good for them, and it's not good for New Yorkers or a U.S. economy that is going to be relying on this wave of innovators.

Our job is to take the amazing company in California, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Jersey, Florida, India, China, Brazil, Europe...wherever, and bring their great idea to this great city.

When AlleyWire was in its infancy, we got some help—a little media love, some warm introductions, and that allowed us to make our way.

Now it's time to pay it forward.

Now we need your help.

Not only will you be rewarded with some of our cool swag, but you'll help us bring amazing and innovative ideas to NYC—ultimately, this may help your own business, a friend's business, an amazing charity/non-profit, your local community, the NYC economy, the U.S. and global economy...or it may just open an innovative idea to you that makes you a little less bored or a little more efficient.

So What Are You Supporting?

Take a look at some of the "vignettes" and special segments we've produced for New York-focused companies already. We'll produce similar original content (it's editorial material, so we never charge) for these outside-NYC-companies — normally this type of work can be cost-prohibitive to create for most young firms that can't access media coverage.

And some of the truly awesome founders and innovators we come across will also appear on our Creator's Corner segment.

We use our own site, marketing channels and distribution partners to make sure that this content is seen by the right audiences, and to have meaningful impact to the covered company.

I also personally think it's pretty cool that we got Tim Ferriss (of 4-Hour Body and 4-Hour Work Week Fame) to do an interview with us!

One Cool Fact About AlleyWire?

We're trying to take a bit of arrogance out of the newsroom. Not only do you hopefully feel our stories are fun and lacking in pretense, but so far, they've often been controlled by you — our audience.

Much of what we covered has been listed as part of our "Coverage Competition" and then voted on by our viewers.

Now, with the launch of our new website in March, the "Coverage Competition" you currently see on alleywire.com is being renamed "The AlleyWorthies," which we are humbly calling the "Oscars of Innovation." A chance for our viewers to vote on nominated startups to find the best and brightest.

We're hoping to also use the AlleyWorthies as a forum to continue to discover great companies and content outside NYC, to continue the mission of our 100s/100d project after its initial run.

And while it's nice just to be nominated, the winners get an amazing 3-D designed and printed statuette as well as an in-depth story.

Our Goal & Our Streeetch Goal

At the $25,000 level we're looking to raise, you can help us get past the finish line for our 100s/100d project in great shape.

And while $25,000 is our goal, at every additional level of $25,000 you can help us afford to extend our beyond-NYC-coverage even longer. And, at $100,000, you help us grow to our next permanent newsroom location.

At the end of this project, 100 new Startups (including around 10 charitable groups) will have a face and story to show New Yorkers that perhaps didn't exist before. And hopefully, hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of people will now have a new product/service to try and ultimately support.

Wouldn't it be cool if the next Facebook, Uber or BuzzFeed was discovered here...and you can say you were a part of it!

Our Final Appeal

We wouldn't be able to complete this project without you. We have to level-up, and reach out to even more correspondents, videographers and editors to make this a reality. Plus, we'd quite like to go "on location," rather than just Skype or satellite interviews, to film some of these innovative companies and get a real sense of who they are.

And that's it, we hope you'll check out our videos, and know how wonderful we think it is to have an opportunity to present what we're doing to you.

We'll also be announcing some pretty fantastic updates throughout the project, including some amazing partnerships and the official launch of our new site—but I can't spoil the surprises just yet!

You can always email me personally any time at neil@alleywire.com and we look forward to working with you and to your continued support of our project—bringing 100 outside-NYC-startups to New Yorkers' attention!

Until then, keep "Living Innovatively!"

—Neil, on behalf of the AlleyWire Team

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge is time. We have 100 Days to tell 100 Stories. This means at least one per day. We know we can do it (in fact our current story/day ratio over any 30-day period is just under two), but it's also a matter of the startups we want to cover getting on board and making sure that we can schedule them properly.

Luckily, we have about an 82% success rate when reaching out to startups for coverage, and a scheduling production team to help coordinate. We'll be in pre-production, planning and research in March, and then hit the ground running through April, May and June, editing all the while, and using some time in July to round things out and wrap up.

In the instance that we are getting close to our deadline, we luckily have great staff that can ramp up and work with a sense of urgency to hit our target. That's why we really put a focus on people, and target only the best.

The only other main risk is our equipment scheduling, and having enough to go around. We have several camera packs, but we want to make sure that we schedule our folks in such a way that there is enough to go around.

But, Life and Kickstarter projects are certainly a risk worth taking!
