At Chromacon, we connect all New Zealanders with a group of highly talented multi-disciplinary independent creators working across an ever-expanding range of mediums including illustration, comics, concept art, sculpture/ designer toys, animation, tabletop/ video games, and more!
After 3 successful festivals since 2013, Chromacon has grown to become a landmark event on Aotearoa's arts calendar. In 2017, over 100 exhibitors showcased their work to 7500+ visitors.
This year we’ve almost doubled in size and will be showcasing close to 200 Creators and taking over all floors of our venue - the newly refurbished Aotea Centre. As such, our costs has grown considerably, but we’re more committed than ever to remain true to our kaupapa (Te Reo Maori meaning Principles, Ethos, and Values): Making the arts freely accessible to everyone.
Chromacon 2019 will take place over the weekend of 1 - 2 June 2019 - Completely FREE for public entry. Once again, we're partnering up with Auckland Live to bring Chromacon to Aotea Centre at the heart of Auckland City.
Chromacon 2019 will feature:
- Almost 200 NZ & international illustrators, comic artists, designers, animators, sculptors, game developers and more personally showcasing their work to the public.
- CHROMACADE: our dedicated interactive zone for indie games.
- Screenings, live drawing and painting demonstrations.
- Public artist talks, discussion panels and Q&A’s.
- Games and interactive activities.
- Live group collab mural and other cool activities!
- CHROMA CONNECT: a creative summit featuring industry talks/ panels and masterclasses aimed at professional development, to take place the following weekend (8-9 June) in Wellington in partnership with Massey University and Weta Workshop.

🙏 WE NEED YOUR HELP! 🙏
So why are we back on Kickstarter? The answer has always been the same: to keep Chromacon FREE and ACCESSIBLE to everyone. We're proud of the fact that a core component of our success has always been the direct support of our community.
Returning to Kickstarter does not mean we have become stagnant, far from it - it is exactly because of the growth of the festival and creators that we need YOUR HELP in order to reach the full potential of Chromacon 2019. Your pledges, big and small, are hugely appreciated. Every bit helps to support the super talented creators and amazing independent works that make up the bones of this community event.
Funds raised from the Kickstarter campaign will go towards:
- Keeping the Festival FREE. Supporting running costs such as venue hire and marketing.
- Publishing the Festival's official art book, CHROMA Vol 4. We work with good folks at The Online Printer to create high quality artbooks that reflect this year’s Exhibitors and their best work.
- Bringing and hosting exciting international guests to Aotearoa. Full of knowledge, talent and experience, Chromacon is a rare opportunity for Kiwi creators to network with some of the world’s leading industry figures.
💝 BACKER REWARDS 💝
In return for pledging your support we’re offering some cool backer rewards, as well as of course our eternal thanks and gratitude. Among our pledge rewards are shirts, pins, stickers, limited-edition art prints as well as our Festival art book Chroma Vol.4. Artists have also generously donated both original one-off art and self-produced works.
IMPORTANT: Backers in New Zealand are very welcome to pick up their rewards directly from us at Chromacon 2019 (1-2 June, Aotea Centre, Auckland) anytime over the course of the festival weekend - please bring some ID or show us a screenshot of your Kickstarter account.
Unfortunately, there's no way for us to add a "free shipping" alternative NZ option. However, if you pick up directly from us at the festival - we'll gift you the rewards with love in a special Chromacon tote bag made from organic Calico Cotton.
Not based in New Zealand or out of town Chromacon weekend? We got you - not everyone can attend Chromacon 2019. That’s why the pledge rewards also provide a perfect chance to snag some of the great artwork that’ll be at Chromacon and ensure that you don’t experience a bout of FOMO.

Risks and challenges
There’s a lot of work that goes into organising an arts festival such as Chromacon. With many different components involved, it is a big task for our small team to ensure everything comes together, and is delivered on time and within budget. This includes indoor and outdoor activations, liaising with various stakeholders, funders, artists, collaborators and teams, as well as creating and tweaking programmes to make sure we put on the best, most enjoyable, diverse and exciting festival we can.
There's no doubt that Chromacon is a passion dream project, but it's a dream we've successfully turned into reality two times in the past, with your support - we can definitely make it happen again.
Since 2013, Chromacon has grown as a festival with the support of our crowdfunding backers, and we can't wait to make you all proud once again. We are confident and 100% committed to making it work, even if it means long hours, a lot of coffee and persevering with crazy ideas.
We’re so honored and grateful for the encouragement, support and aroha of the community we work with, and for the time given by our awesome volunteers and team. We want to give back, and make Chromacon a space where everyone’s welcome to come together as a community to engage, learn, inspire, share and celebrate the wonderful work from talented indie creators in Aotearoa.
We honestly can't make Chromacon happen without YOU, so please help spread the word of our campaign far and wide. Every little bit counts.
Thank you so much for your support. We look forward to seeing you at Chromacon 2019!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
