About this project
We're Team Chroma, organisers of CHROMACON – New Zealand’s flagship curated indie arts festival that celebrates the coming together of community, creative independence and artistic excellence.
At Chromacon, we aim to connect New Zealanders with a group of highly talented multi-disciplinary visual storytellers working across an ever-expanding range of mediums including illustration, comics, design, sculpture, animation, video games, and more!
Following on from two successful runs in 2013 and 2015, Chromacon has grown to become one of Aotearoa’s premier visual arts festivals as well as one of the best local events on Auckland’s calendar. So far, we’ve connected over 200 artists with more than 6000 festival-goers and we’re hoping that this year, Chromacon will continue to grow even further.
As a 2-day FREE event, this year’s festival will take place over the weekend of 8 - 9 April 2017. Once again, we're partnering up with Auckland Live to bring Chromacon to Auckland’s Aotea Center, this time expanding to include two floors, Limelight and Aotea Square itself!
Chromacon 2017 will feature:
- Over 100 local creators, illustrators, comic artists, designers, animators, sculptors, game developers and other creatives personally showcasing their work to the public.
- CHROMACADE: our new dedicated interactive zone for indie games.
- CHROMA CONNECT: a creative symposium running alongside the Festival with industry sessions aimed at professional development.
- Screenings, live drawing and painting demonstrations.
- Artist talks, discussion panels and Q&A’s.
- Games and interactive activities in and around Aotea Square.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Why are we Kickstarting? To continue to keep this amazing Festival FREE, ACCESSIBLE and OPEN to everyone.
That being said, putting together an event like this is no small feat, especially when you take into account a limited budget and the not-for-profit nature of CHROMACON. We have been lucky in that we are supported to a point with some grants and public funding as well as the generous contributions of a wonderful group of supporters.
In order to reach the potential of our ambitions for Chromacon 2017, we truly need YOUR HELP. Your pledges, big and small are hugely appreciated and DO make a difference to realise our passion of keeping the focus of the Festival on the super talented creators and amazing independent works that make up the bones of this community event.
Funds raised from the Kickstarter campaign will go towards:
- Keeping the Festival FREE. We’re proud that Chromacon is a crowdfunded, independent arts festival that is community owned and shared
- Festival running costs, including venue and marketing costs
- Publishing the Festival's official art book, CHROMA Vol 3. We work with good folks at The Online Printer to create high quality artbooks that reflect this year’s Exhibitors and some of their best work.
- Bringing and hosting exciting international guests to Aotearoa. Full of knowledge, talent and experience, Chromacon is a rare opportunity for Kiwi creatives to network with some of the world’s leading industry figures.
In return for pledging your support we’re offering some cool backer rewards, as well as of course our eternal gratitude.
Among our pledge rewards are shirts, badges, stickers, limited prints as well as our Festival artbook Chroma Vol.3. Artists have also generously donated their artworks for some lucky pledges.
Not based in New Zealand or out of town Chromacon weekend? We got you - not everyone can attend Chromacon 2017. That’s why the pledge rewards also provide a perfect chance to snag some of the great artwork that’ll be at Chromacon and ensure that you don’t experience a bout of FOMO.
We even have some exclusive one-of-a-kind artwork as well as a number of digital download codes for ArtRage on Android - an amazing digital painting app created right here in New Zealand (thanks Ambient Design!).
HIT THAT PLEDGE BUTTON and help us break down cultural, age, gender and technological barriers through art by connecting diverse individuals and communities.

Here's what some people had to say...
“[Chromacon] had a nice sense of community. Everyone was friendly and willing to chat. So good to go to an event like this and not be bombarded with advertising, it definitely felt like the focus was on the artists.”
- SOPHIA, 2015 Festival Attendee
“The overwhelming success of Chromacon gives me confidence that Chromacon
2017 will again bring together our wider community in celebration of Kiwi creativity.
Chromacon is a fantastic and elegant concept that will continue to grow our

Risks and challenges
There’s a lot of work that goes into organising an arts festival such as Chromacon. With many different components involved, it is a big task for our small team to ensure everything comes together, and is delivered on time and within budget. This includes indoor and outdoor activations, liaising with various stakeholders, funders, artists, collaborators and teams, as well as creating and tweaking programmes to make sure we put on the best, most enjoyable, diverse and exciting festival we can.
There's no doubt that Chromacon is a passion dream project, but it's a dream we've successfully turned into reality two times in the past, with your support - we can definitely make it happen again.
Since 2013, Chromacon has grown as a festival with the support of our crowdfunding backers, and we can't wait to make you all proud once again. We are confident and 100% committed to making it work, even if it means long hours, a lot of coffee and persevering with crazy ideas.
We’re so honored and grateful for the encouragement, support and aroha of the community we work with, and for the time given by our awesome volunteers and team. We want to give back, and make Chromacon a space where everyone’s welcome to come together as a community to engage, learn, inspire, share and celebrate the wonderful work from talented indie creators in Aotearoa.
We honestly can't make Chromacon happen without YOU, so please help spread the word of our campaign far and wide. Every little bit counts.
Thank you so much for your support. We look forward to seeing you at Chromacon 2017!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
