‘Alix In Wundergarten is a twisted, black comedy set in the confines of a radio recording studio. Our invited ‘live’ audience will be guided on a trip to Wonderland with the infamous Alice through the interpretation of four actors putting on a seasonal Christmas radio drama. However, all plots and characters are soon sent spiralling out of control when one performer, hell bent on changing all the rules, tests the director’s boundaries and sends the whole process into utter raucous chaos. Alice becomes Alix in a full gender swap and the rabbit hole is the only way through the Berlin Wall from the oppressed Soviet-run Eastern Bloc. The production will be a witty alternative to the traditional Christmas offerings in Cardiff, both satirising and celebrating the very British tradition of the Christmas radio play. The piece will bite as it charms and provoke our audience as it makes them laugh until they cry.
In order to achieve all of this we've assembled a cracking team of actors, production and creative people who we know can deliver over and above our expectations. That's the easy part. Now we have to give them the means to do this. We have to raise an extra bit of funding that we desperately need to ensure our production values match the vision we have for them. With your help we know we'll make it!
Your support will help us to refine the show in several ways. It will provide greater flexibility for the team when sourcing props for the show which is set in the wonderfully atmospheric and kitch world of a radio recording studio. It will mean our designer Carl Davies has more choice when it comes to selecting costumes for the actors to wear. It will give our whole creative team more freedom in their artistic choices and their physical realisation of the production.
We've created what we think is a pretty cool reward structure, starting at just £10, which will get you a twitter shout-out and a thank you on our website, right through to £500, which will allow you a unique invitation to be present at our dress rehearsal. This is your opportunity to have your say and offer some creative input to the company, your moment to shape the show before it goes 'live' to members of the public.
We have a lot of live up to with this production, having received some amazing audience and critic response from our inaugural project last year, 'The World of Work' which played to packed houses at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. That show firmly stamped our mark on the Cardiff theatre-scene and now we have to go even further with 'Alix in Wundergarten'.
We'd be so grateful if you choose to support this project and promise that you will feel as proud as we will of the result.
Risks and challenges
We hope the risks on this project are pretty low, owing in no small part to the enthusiasm and support the project has received from Kate Wasserberg, Artistic Director of the The Other Room. Our main concerns though would have to be audience attendance (which is always something of an unknown quantity with any new work) and how the show is received by our fellow industry professionals, people whose opinions we respect greatly. These are factors that we are used to however.
Another tricky job we have is translating our bold and ambitious project into the charmingly restricted space in The Other Room. We're sure it's been a challenging mission for many of the companies visiting its doors but for us, its resident company, it's the challenge of complete transformation we aim to achieve. And this is achievable only with the support of you, our kind backers. You have the ability to make our hopes for this piece a reality. If we fail to secure this last but vital bit of funding, our artistic vision will have to be compromised and this is something no company would ever want to impose having assembled such an amazing team of creative individuals.
We totally appreciate that theatre can be full of risk, but we also know that magic is often created by a few talented people and just a little bit of money. Come join us, support us and help make some of that magic happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
