THANK YOU!!! Bowls of Love has reached $15,000!
The last four weeks have been incredible, and I am overjoyed with the response I have received. Bowls of Love is a project straight from the heart, and my hope is that it will nourish the lives of all those it touches. Thanks to all of you, I now have the funds for the gorgeous photography, high-quality editing, and fantastic publishing. Stay tuned for updates @SoooPaleo and at www.sooopaleo.blogspot.com. Thank you again, and I cannot wait to share Bowls of Love with all of you this Fall!
You don’t have to be a professional actress (see above!) or an expert chef to create beautiful food for the people you love. I was taught from a very young age that the deepest kind of love can, and should be, shown through food. I am in the process of writing my first cookbook to help show people how to eat wildly nutritious food that is colorful, delicious, and easy to prepare. With a little courage and a lot of love, anyone can create a special meal.
The dream of this project initially started back in 2012 when living in Boston and working as a consultant in financial services out of my home. With limited friends, colleagues, and family in the area, I started to really explore my passions in the kitchen. I spent my free time getting certified as a holistic health coach with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and cooking like crazy. I lived next door to the best farmers market in Boston, so I would buy the freshest, most beautiful ingredients every week and experiment in the kitchen. I decided to start a blog, and in a matter of months I had over 100,000 hits in dozens of countries.
As I was experimenting with cooking, connecting with other bloggers, and reading about nutrition, I decided to explore the Paleo diet. More information on the Paleo diet can be found at http://thepaleodiet.com/about-the-paleo-diet/, but I specifically tested this way of eating for a few reasons. I had suffered from a wide variety of stomach problems my entire life, experienced severe seasonal allergies, and had chronic ear infections (along with constant cycles of antibiotics) as a child. I had read that the Paleo diet could help with all of this and more, so it was worth a shot.
After almost two years of experimentation, I have grown to love the Paleo “lifestyle”. I often refer to it as a lifestyle rather than a diet, because I can assure you that if you are eating my food you will never feel like you are dieting! As a health coach, I know that everyone’s body and chemistry are different, so you need to listen to yours to achieve holistic health. For me, holistic health in a bowl looks like this: half a dozen vegetables, some locally sourced meat, homemade stock, and a big spoon. There are a great deal of wonderful Paleo cookbooks on the market (and I own most of them!), but my book Bowls of Love has one main distinction – it focuses on the fact that every food has its own story. Every meal of your entire life has a memory attached to it, and every plate and bowl holds those stories.
I shared this concept with 44 of my favorite people and asked them to send me bowls. Overwhelmed by the joy, love, and bowls I received in response, I am now crafting 44 seasonal Paleo soup recipes to create my first cookbook. Each soup will be photographed in one of the bowls by my incredibly talented photographer Erica Gannett (www.ericagannett.com) and then dedicated to the tremendous person who sent it to me.
Now I just need your help to bring this dream to a reality and fund my project! With your generous donations, I will be able to fund the editing, photography, and publishing of the cookbook. Please check out the incredible rewards for participating – the cookbook will make any Paleo, gluten-free, dairy-free, or food-loving friend or family member thrilled! The book is on track to be published this Fall just in time for soup season and the holidays.
I have never raised money on Kickstarter before, but I have backed a successful project and know the energy and good karma it produced. Editing, photography, and publishing costs are very high, and I am using Kickstarter to reach out to my communities near and far for a little support. I feel so strongly about connecting with people, hearing their stories linked to food, and investing in each other’s health. Kickstarter is an incredible platform to spread the good word, encourage people to make healthy changes, and give both friends and strangers the ability to support a worthy project.
Before a single penny is raised, I already need to thank my 44 generous friends and family members who hand picked the most special bowls and sent them to me. Every time I got a package delivery notification, I was filled with incredible excitement to get home and see what I would find. Bowls arrived from all over the world, and the experience of opening each package truly will never be forgotten. I also owe a very special thank you to my look-a-like brother Austin Rakowski. At only 16 years old amidst golf practice, homework, and getting his license, he found the time to create my Kickstarter video. I could never have done it without him!
Risks and challenges
I am so pleased to say that I have a signed contract with Rocket Science Productions to publish this cookbook. I am almost halfway through the cooking and photography for the book, and with your help, I will be able to finalize the cooking, complete the photo shoots, and begin the editing/publishing process. The biggest challenge will be raising the funds for the project. Those who know me know that I am incredibly dedicated to the things I care about, freakishly organized, and obsessed with sharing the love and joy baked into this project. I will do everything in my power to spread the word, reward your efforts, and meet my goal.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
