I am passionate about singing and songwriting and I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to do this for a living for the last 15 years.
“Tell Me a Story” is my seventh studio recording and I am so excited for people to hear these brand new songs. I have been writing and recording for this project over the past year and much of the work has already been done. During the next month I will be in the final stages of recording, mixing, mastering and manufacturing this new CD. Your Kickstarter support will help to get this project out the door. In many ways, this is a “Kickfinisher” project. The funds raised here will pay for these crucial final phases of the project.
As an independent, professional musician I make a modest but decent living writing, recording and performing my music. I am so thankful that I get to spend every day doing what I love. I have learned that one of the hardest things to do is to keep “feeding the machine”. We artists need to keep investing in our next projects in order to propel our careers and grow our art.
The costs involved in recording a CD project can be overwhelming. In the past, some of my projects have received government grants (FACTOR and Ontario Arts Council), for which I am very grateful. Yay Canada!. This time around, it seemed really appropriate to make this a “crowd-funded” event. I love the way that Kickstarter allows my fans to be a truly important part of my music. It is all about “community” and this particular record contains songs that touch on the value of community. It’s a good fit!
“Tell Me a Story” is a collection of reflective “rootsy” songs with a Folk-Alt-Country flavour. In the past, it has often been difficult to describe my music because I draw on musical influences from R&B and Jazz to Pop, Celtic and Progressive Folk/Rock. In essence, I am an acoustic singer-songwriter pouring my heart out in personal stories and songs. Then these lucky little songs get to be beautifully dressed up in shimmering studio productions.
I am recording this project at AME Recording Studio in Kitchener, Ontario with owner-operator and award-winning producer, Andrew Horrocks. An accomplished musician and a highly experienced producer/engineer, Andrew has gained a solid reputation in Canada for his excellence in studio recording. He has a roster of top-notch session players, many of whom are considered to be some of the best in Canada. Honestly - I can say I have been blown away by the quality of musicianship and the brilliance of the players that he has brought into the studio to play on my songs. I promise that you are in for a wonderful treat!
In the event that we raise more than the projected target amount, there are many valuable uses for funds to help release, market and promote the CD. This could include promotional materials (posters, banners, merchandise, advertisements, radio promotion, press kits, websites, social media etc.) as well as tour and special event expenses. The more money that comes in - the greater the opportunity we have to get the CD into the hands of new potential listeners.
I do not take your support for granted. I have learned over the years that YOU are the reason I make music. Songs have a powerful way of connecting us as we face the joys and struggles of life. A song can immediately take us from strangers to friends. I have been humbled and inspired when I see that my music has moved, touched or encouraged so many people. I continue to gratefully receive your kind words, your tears and your laughter - the sweet connection between the artist and the audience/listener. This is why I make music. This is why I believe you will be happy that you came on-board with me to complete this CD and release this music to the world. So let’s keep telling our stories and connecting through the power of music and the joy of community. Thank you so much for taking an interest in this project.

Here are some shameless promotional quotes from a few people who have opinions that matter. This makes me feel very fortunate that they like me...

“A passionate and soothing voice...musical arrangements fresh, interesting and beautifully integrated.” Loreena McKennitt
“Since the release of her debut CD in 2000 I have followed Ali’s musical career with great interest. I’ve been very impressed, not just with her artistry, but with her level of commitment and her willingness to invest countless hours in the pursuit of excellence. The results of this pursuit are evident. Ali’s songwriting and vocal abilities have progressed at a rapid pace… her future is very bright indeed.” Jim Vallance, Producer / Songwriter (Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Heart)
"Matthews' softly soaring voice illuminates each melody with lucid maturity and sensitivity. Her vocals are both vulnerable and knowing, finely attuned to life's struggles and hopes." Taylor Guitars, California

"Songbird, Ali Matthews...There's star-power in Stratford beyond the Festival's stage." The London Free Press
"By turns elegant and inspirational, Matthews never allows the spiritual nature of her songs to degenerate into preachy musical dogma. This is music that speaks to the soul through the ear, whether you call it folk, country, pop or sacred." The Kitchener-Waterloo Record
"...remarkably poised and confident... her voice is expressive, distinctive and clear, filtering her lyrics through a personality that is both likable and sincere... her melodies are fresh, original and engaging: more than that, they're memorable... by any standards this is among the very best singer-songwriter releases in quite some time." The Stratford Beacon Herald
“...I’m so happy that God has put Ali’s voice into this world.” Larry Norman ~ The Godfather of Christian Rock
Risks and challenges
Fortunately, the risks and challenges of this project are minimal. I have gained valuable experience from writing, recording and releasing 6 CD projects over the years. Each has gone on their own journey of success and I have learned that all of the time, effort and money that is poured into these projects is translated into a great deal of pleasure for the listener and a fulfilling career for me.
“Tell Me a Story” is being produced by experienced professionals and passionate artists and musicians. I have the utmost confidence based on the results of my past 6 CD projects that this will be warmly embraced by my loyal supporters and new fans alike. The time-line is feasible and the only possible concern is that the completion date could be changed in the event of technical or logistical unforeseen hinderances to the process. The timing could change slightly but my mandate is to keep quality of the product remaining at the highest standard of excellence.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
