About this project
THANKS TO YOU - we are making an EP with the legendary producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, James Bay, Tom Waits, Norah Jones, Cold War Kids, etc). extraordinarily - we have hit the 100K mark and i will be able to record some additional tracks with him, for a longer EP.
if we are able to reach $130K, i will be able to record a full album.
Either way, there will be a release in the fall of 2017! and all backers *will* receive their pledge rewards - since funding has been successful!
here's a sneak peek of what we've been doing in the studio so far.
this is, to put it mildly, a gamechanger for me. and it feels like what i’ve worked towards my entire musical career.
whatever level you can participate on this journey with me, it will always be greatly appreciated.
"I’m interested to collaborate with Alicia first because of her talent as a musician and secondly I’m always intrigued to help an artist reshape the perception of what their artistic output is. With Alicia being known primarily as an actor there is intrigue in making music with her because her creativity goes way beyond acting, she is a great songwriter with an especially unique voice." - Jacquire King
when i first started saying ‘i am a singer-songwriter’ and began playing shows, it was 9 years ago. i had a long way to go. i was scared out of my mind, but i also knew that’s why i had to keep on doing it.
i wrote hundreds of songs, after spending my entire life up to that point knowing i wanted to. finally i realized they would never exist unless i got brave enough to let them out. the more i wrote, the more lined up behind them in my head and my heart, waiting to be given voice to.
some of them were good. some of them were terrible. i kept on writing.
same with my live shows. some were electric. some i got so nervous i couldn’t catch my breath the entire time and didn’t do what i intended, and drove home embarrassed and in tears.
but every morning after that, i sat down at the piano and wrote some more. played until i knew what i’d done wrong and what i could do better.
i started releasing produced tracks in 2009. i was fortunate enough to work with some incredible producers, engineers and musicians right from the beginning who heard the possibilities there.
in 2012, i played one of the aforementioned ‘electric’ shows at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. they have a beautiful recording system there and i recorded the show on multitrack; only problem was i was completely broke that year. i turned to Kickstarter to try and raise the funds i needed - not to record the album, since that part was already taken care of - but simply to have the 11 tracks mixed, mastered, and put together into an album so i could release it as my first full length record.
the response blew me away. i was truly just getting started musically so i didn’t have any idea whether i’d be successful – and thanks to this incredible platform, and the amazing people who supported me - i was. and so Live at Rockwood was released in Spring 2012.
from there, everything just turned to lightspeed musically.
as a result of that record, i ended up playing a record release show in Nashville, where i met Ben Folds. after writing a few songs together and sharing some of my pre-existing music with him, he decided to produce a few tracks of mine. that turned into a few more tracks. that turned into Revisionary History, which was released through Compass Records last year.
on the heels of that release, i was honored to receive, for the first time, some beautiful reviews from some well respected music journalists that pointed out: while i’ve mostly pursued and been known for an acting career up til now – i have been a musician for just as long. just not in public. and the music speaks to that (or so they said).
and now - with the songs i've written since that time - some written on my own, some collaborated on with some of the finest writers in Nashville - it truly feels like the culmination of all the groundwork laid thus far to be on the brink of recording with Jacquire King.
truth is - i’m not doing it for any reason other than: i have something to say. i want to connect. and i feel that music is most authentic way i’ve been given in this life to share my interpretation of how it feels to be a human being.
all i’ve wished for is a way to connect on a wider platform. and with a producer of this level resonating with my songs and wanting to bring them to life, it feels that the 15,000 Day mark is not only the time i’ve lived when it just so happened to happen – it’s exactly the perfect time. it’s what i had to reach for these songs to exist. it’s the amount of life that needed to come before, first.
there is no greater gift i could ever ask for than you being a part of bringing this dream to life. i can promise you i will put my heart and soul into these songs, and i will be eternally grateful for your faith in me. i'll do you proud.
and given that i could never, would never, have gotten this far without the countless beautiful people who have helped me and believed in me along the way - it seems only fitting that this next chapter be created in this way as well.
thank you, and love.
A NOTE ON THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
(AKA: ACTORS ARE WEALTHY, AREN'T THEY?)
i know that there are some who may read this far and say, 'yes - but - she's been on The Walking Dead, and Justified, and Nashville, and Supernatural, and all those Hallmark movies-- and all those other movies and shows. so she's rich! right?'
no ☺ without being tacky- it just isn’t that way. if you’re not a series regular on a series, or one of the top box office draws in film- these days, the acting business isn’t in any way a windfall. i consider myself massively, enormously, beat-the-odds-and-i-thank-god-everyday lucky to be one of the fraction of SAG-AFTRA members who can support myself and pay my bills doing what i love. i don’t in any way have an extravagant lifestyle, and EVERY penny of savings has gone to my music in the last 8 years.
the TV shows i referenced above were all billed and contracted as guest starring roles. i don’t want to be tacky and share what we get for that- but it is the same for me as it is for any other actor in SAG-AFTRA who guest stars at top of show. that’s just how it works these days - any actor can attest to it. and while i am *very* blessed to be working... my earnings don't currently provide me anything left over to create a project like this.
every bit of your contribution will go to making this record the absolute best, most special, most full of love that it can be. and best of all - this way we can make it together!
Risks and challenges
risks and challenges -
the only risk would be that i don't make my goal. if that were to happen, i wouldn't be able to fulfill the rewards; that's why i've chosen to do a fixed goal instead of flexible funding. and i loved kickstarter last time, so it was an easy decision.
the only other variable i can think of is if there's an unforeseen delay due to my schedule, or jacquire's, and we can't finish post production on the record by September. this scenario is highly unlikely.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
