About

Framed: The Alice Wheeldon Story

We discovered Alice's story when we were looking for a theme for our next album. We were instantly gripped by the emotions contained within it: love, fear, doubt, joy, sorrow and anger. This 100 year old tale of fake news, family values and activism is oh so familiar in today’s turbulent Political world.

‘Framed: The Alice Wheeldon Story’ will be our third album. To be clear, the funding we’re hoping to raise with this Kickstarter campaign is not to go towards making the album. We’ve funded the recording at WildGoose Records & Studios and it’s being pressed right now (exciting!). The track you hear playing in the background on our introductory video is 'Twisted Round' (by Jo Freya) from the new album! The album launch is being held 5th October 2019 at The Old Bell Hotel, Derby, as part of Derby Folk Weekender. Tickets available now!

Why we need you!

We want to use this funding to enhance the audience experience of our live performances and spread Alice's story far and wide. Primarily this will take the form of a souvenir song book, with original artwork and design by our own Mel Biggs. This will contain:

  • Original material written by members of the band including lyrics and sheet music
  • Our Page-to-Stage journey so you’ll discover where our inspiration came from
  •  Images including family photos, newspaper clippings and excerpts from personal Wheeldon family letters which directly relate to our writing
  • Historical information to put Alice’s story in context with the early 1900s social and political scene

Other merchandise that we’ll be able to produce with this funding includes:

  •  A free handout for live shows with a brief summary of each track and Alice's story
  • Limited edition 38mm badges with 3 original Mel Biggs designs relating to Alice’s story
  • A limited edition “Feisty Women!” tea towel with original Mel Biggs design for you to take home and put to use in your home!

Secondly, the money will help us to fully realise the potential of this album and live show via various marketing strategies to gain us interest and bookings outside of our usual network of contacts. The money will help pay for:

  • Design time for digital and printed media
  • Printing of promotional materials
  • Information boards and props for use during live show

If we exceed our target, our wish list would include:

  • A professionally filmed music video (or two!) of tracks from the new album
  •  A small redesign and update to our website www.moiraitrio.co.uk to make it more user friendly
  •  PR to promote the album and live show

Alice’s Story

Alice, well known & respected in Derby, was a feisty, principled working woman. As free thinkers, Alice & her family supported women’s suffrage & emancipation, rational dress & mixed bathing, social justice & were opposed to war.

In 1916 as terrible news of the disastrous First World War emerged, MI5 became concerned about the growing anti-war movement & opposition to conscription. Undercover agents invented the story that Alice Wheeldon & her family plotted to poison Prime Minister David Lloyd George.

The Wheeldon & Mason families were convicted of conspiracy to murder. They were tried at the Old Bailey in London in a blaze of publicity. They were found guilty & sentenced to prison.

Alice's story is not yet concluded...

Chloë Mason, Alice’s Great Granddaughter, is in the process of applying to the Criminal Cases Review Commission to get the convictions against Alice and her family quashed. The main thrust of the application concerns the absence of and official silence regarding William Rickard, the undercover agent known as ‘Alex Gordon’.

He was not called or made available at trial, having been kept away and sent to South Africa. Furthermore, he was a man of mental instability and serious criminal history. Those facts were never disclosed to the defence.

The application to the CCRC will contend that his absence was deliberately contrived, to prevent the Defendants from properly developing their explanation regarding the poison; and that his history was knowingly concealed, to prevent his character, or the credibility of his superior and the key prosecution witness, being properly scrutinised.

Risks and challenges

As we've gone along making the album and writing this material, we have collected a significant amount of information and resources. We're really keen to share this information with you as part of the souvenir song book. Much of the information we have collected is in the public domain but some is private or is the unpublished work of others.

As we are uncertain as to the outcome of this Kickstarter campaign, the compiling of this material into a book format has not yet begun. Therefore it is difficult to assess how tricky it might be to publish some of the information in our name.

We are in very regular contact with both Chloe Mason (Alice's Great Granddaughter) and Nicholas Hiley (historian). They have both worked tirelessly over many years gathering many gigabytes of data concerning the details of Alice's story. We have been privvy to some of this information through emails, meetings and conversations and have managed to get permission from Chloe as to what she is and isn't happy for us to include.

At the very least, the souvenir songbook will contain our original lyrics and sheet music, our page-to-stage journey and images in the public domain. What is unknown at this time is how much personal information we will be able to use.

Assuming we get the funding, we are committed to producing a souvenir song book that will enhance the audience experience and understanding of this work.
