The idea behind this project is to document and showcase my favorite borough in my favorite city on the planet: Queens.
I've recently taken up again with film photography, so I'll be hopping around the city (via train, bus, and my sister's car) to snap some photos and, in some cases, testing out printing film in dark rooms and such.
My plan is to continue shooting film for this project. I want to fuck around and experiment using different film also - not just black and white vs. color, but also different camera lenses, disposable film, polaroids, and whatever else I find out about over time.
Recently, as I've gone around taking photos, I've began to approach shots a lot like how I listen to music; while I like listening to albums on vinyl, I also dig cassette tapes for some, and straight up streaming/mp3 for others. I kind of feel this way with film too...some shots are just made for murky black and white film, while others moments feel like they'd look great off a shitty disposable camera.
Ultimately, I'll find a spot on the world wide web to post up a website to host these all the photos that come out of this project.
Deadass - I want to share Queens with you! Kind of.
Starting out simple; if you think this is interesting but don't wanna spend too much, that's totally cool and I appreciate your support. You can back for $1 and I'll email you a digital copy of a random shot I think is cool.
Back at $5 and I'll send you a high quality print of a random (but nice, I hope and promise) image taken around town.
Back for $25 and we could hop on a train and head to some of my favorite spots around Queens and I'll feed you. I'm thinking some of my favorite pizza spots, dumplings, bandejas, sisig, and more. Queens has some of the best food in the world – you know this, I know this, and I know that you know that I am going to hook you up. (I was gonna hyperlink some restaurants but...nah.)
You'll also get a contact sheet, which I just started doing recently and I think just looks really cool.
WHERE'S THE MONEY GOING?
The money received from this campaign will go towards buying a bunch of rolls of film to take photos with, as well as Ilford Multigrade RV Deluxe paper for prints.
Following that, I'll need to pay for photo labs to develop, scan, and print film (this is where the 4x6" prints will come from). As I don't have a dark room in my apartment, I'll be using both the International Center of Photography and the Bushwick Community Darkroom (in Brooklyn *gasps*, I know) to print and develop the 8x10" prints and contact sheets for rewards.
Risks and challenges
Let me be upfront about this: I am really fucking lazy.
But me putting this up here is me relying on accountability and social pressure to get this done!
That said, I should note that I am in no way a professional photographer and honestly, don't really know what I'm doing. I think this is cool sometimes, like in that contact sheet up above, because it ends up leading to really beautiful mistakes. All of my favorite artists always embraced their own shortcomings and imperfections. Hopefully you feel that way too.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
