I'm so excited to be curating a concert in June of this year, marking 100 years since the end of the First World War, to include the premiere performance of my Requiem.
Scored for cello, tenor, choir & organ, the Requiem combines the traditional Latin text with new text by Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales and recipient of the Queen's Medal for Poetry, who I'm incredibly excited to be working with! I'm working hard to create a piece that combines old and new, reflecting on the past whilst looking toward the future.
The Requiem will feature two phenomenal soloists: cellist Laura van der Heijden (BBC Young Musician of the Year) and tenor Nicky Spence ('A voice of real distinction' – Daily Telegraph). I couldn't be more thrilled that these two extraordinary musicians are taking part in this project, alongside the magnificent Vox Luna, a choir comprising some of the UK's best young professional singers.
The concert will also feature music designed to illuminate the experience of a Requiem in various ways; towering, beautiful works by John Tavener, James MacMillan, Richard Rodney-Bennett, Parry, Pearsall and Purcell will help to form a kind of musical bridge between 1918 and the present day.
We'd be so grateful of any support you could offer towards making this project the absolute best it can be. There are, naturally, enormous costs involved in pulling this off – I'm not taking any sort of fee for the Requiem (a real labour of love!), but venue costs, artist fees, music hire and publicity amount to a total which is somewhat larger than I can come close to alone! With some initial funding raised privately, I'm seeking a total of £1500 through the amazing community here on Kickstarter – this sum will ensure that the project can be a real success, a truly special commemorative event which reaches as many people as possible. There are plenty of different rewards to choose from, so do take a look! Any help you could offer would be so hugely appreciated.
The event itself will be in support of Children & the Arts; the more we're able to cover costs in advance of the concert, the more we'll be able to raise on the day for this fantastic organisation.
I hope you'll consider supporting this project, which I hope will be a really special event in this centenary year! The concert is taking place on 9th June 2018 at Holy Trinity Sloane Square, London – I hope you'll be able to join us then, too!
