About this project
DEAD QUIET is HAPPENING!
We can't thank all of you enough for your support and belief in our film. Without you, we could never have reached this point and we can't wait to bring Dead Quiet to life!
Our funding target of £10K has been met, which mean every new pledge we get goes straight towards making this film even bigger and better!
Our first reach goal is for £10,500. This will allow us to cover the costs of Kickstarter fees and rewards, bringing us closer to a true £10K budget for the film and giving us more flexibility in post-production to nail the foley and sound design that makes DEAD QUIET such a unique project.
We love you guys! After the campaign ends tomorrow, be sure to follow DEAD QUIET via our Facebook page http://facebook.com/deadquietfilm for updates on the making of the film.
- Alex, Emily & Dan
DEAD QUIET is a post-apocalyptic short film that follows the last human left alive as he struggles to hold onto his humanity. The story from writer Dan McGrath explores the importance of the sounds we create and experience as humans in order to connect with each other and the world around us.
Now director Alex Withers and a team of talented filmmakers are bringing this unique world of vibrant characters, heartbreaking tragedy, endearing humour and existential terror to the life on the big screen. Following months of hard work, the team is now thrilled to be almost ready to shoot, but first, they need your help...
“For me, Dead Quiet is both a disturbing horror and a bittersweet drama about human connection... and the way in which this idea lies at the heart of what makes us ourselves. I love this story’s ability to highlight the fragile nature of mental health, without ever preaching to its audience.” - Alex Withers (Director)
A year ago, the world fell silent. Most of humanity has been exterminated, their bodies and minds taken over as they hunt down the last survivors. The sounds of a misplaced step, opening a door too quickly, a gasp of fear; any noise will get you killed... or worse.
Our lone survivor Paul has learnt to get by in this new world. To eat, to sleep and to move in absolute silence. But facing up to the solitary and hopeless future that awaits him and deprived of human connection, he sets the stage for one last-ditch effort to regain his own humanity.
With DEAD QUIET we’re excited to be bringing the worlds of chilling psychological horrors such as It Follows (David Robert Mitchell) together with the character-led charms of dramas like Trainspotting (Danny Boyle) and American Beauty (Sam Mendes), with that same splash of humour that makes each film such an enduring classic. The fascinating and unique world of Dead Quiet sets the stage for a bold and exciting approach to filming which immediately places an individual stamp on the film.

Many of us worked together before now to create BUTTERFLY, an award-winning short film made for a total budget of £3.5K that is currently enjoying success on the film festival circuit - and our team continues to grow together as we embark on our next filmmaking journey with DEAD QUIET.

With BUTTERFLY we proved we could take a small amount of money and push the boundaries of what was possible to create an emotive and striking film. Now we’re ready to step up our game, but we need your help.
We’ve already invested in some of the key equipment we'll need for the film and will be receiving no pay for this shoot. The amount we’re asking for is what we need to get everything else done: from hiring actors to catering and transport, to additional kit to help make our vision possible, to the building of our caravan set and dressing of locations to make the world of DEAD QUIET come to life. Every step of the way, from production to post and beyond, you will be making this film happen. And it will be spectacular.
(HOW THE BUDGET WILL BE DIVIDED)
We have some fantastic rewards on offer for everyone who supports our campaign. As well as DVDs, BluRays and posters you can snag yourself access to exclusive behind-the-scenes materials from both DEAD QUIET and director Alex Withers’ previous short film BUTTERFLY; a special printed booklet with script, storyboards and more; and even a chance to visit the set during shooting or to appear in DEAD QUIET in your very own role.
Here's some work-in-progress sketches from poster artist Rubén B. Caballero (Hyung86 on DeviantArt), who will be designing the final DEAD QUIET poster available right here on Kickstarter! We'll be revealing the official poster during the campaign, so keep your eyes peeled.

LOCATIONS: We will be filming Dead Quiet in a variety of amazing locations around Nottingham and Derby, from urban wastelands to deep forest clearings. This area has yielded the perfect locations for the Dead Quiet world. A more affordable option than elsewhere in the UK, we can do more with the money you donate. It also provides a striking colour palette and lived-in environment which becomes a character in itself as we bring it to the screen in the absence of the day-to-day hubbub of human life.
THE KIT: We are excited to be shooting on an ARRI ALEXA camera system, with a mixture of ANAMORPHIC and SPHERICAL lenses. We have taken the kit out for a spin around Nottinghamshire filming the test footage featured above, so that our team can experiment with different lenses and find the perfect way to utilise the equipment.
SOUND DESIGN: Sound is a huge part of what makes Dead Quiet a unique undertaking. Our team are collaborating with some of the best sound professionals in the country and experimenting with different techniques to push the use of sound in the film to new and innovative heights. We have a HUGE update on this coming soon so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled to learn more.
PRODUCTION DESIGN: Dead Quiet has a unique style and texture. Work is already underway designing one of the key sets for the film: a caravan which Paul has cleverly adapted to be the ultimate end-of-the-world hideout. Stay tuned to find out more.

Risks and challenges
Filmmaking always comes with many risks and challenges specific to each project. For this one it includes things like shooting in exterior locations in the glorious British weather, coordinating a large group of professionals with busy schedules to all be available at the same time and building an elaborate set involving dissecting and reassembling an entire caravan in a studio space on a limited budget. But this is what we do both for a living and for fun. Our experience in both narrative and commercial filmmaking has prepared us to deal with all eventualities. We have spent years developing this project and have started the ball rolling now because we feel we are at our strongest and most prepared to do the project justice. Of course, there will be unforeseen obstacles, but that's part of what makes filmmaking such an exciting experience and we're more than ready to take it all on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
