Welcome to Week 2, freaks!

We're now one week into our quest, and we just passed $350K of our $500K minimum goal — that means we're 70% of the way to getting this project started!

Plus, we've got almost 2,000 backers on board... and while the funding will let us get started, watching this community grow and interact has been even more exciting. Join us in the comments to share your ideas, questions, and suggestions!

SNL revisited

Sure, I’m an experienced documentary filmmaker with an award-winning team, the support of the Zappa Family Trust, the expert consultation of the Vaultmeister, and access to more media by and about Frank than anyone’s ever had. But behind the curtain – like many of you – I’m also just an ardent Zappa fan.

And not an infallible one! Especially right now, when there's so much going on 24/7. In fact, I made a flub in the last update regarding FZ’s appearances on SNL. I intended to say he only appeared once as host, and then, in my zeal, plugged in the date for his first appearance with Candice Bergen in ‘76 instead of ‘78. I’m old enough to have watched both when they aired, and they made a huge impression on me — but I didn’t catch my error in time. These campaigns move at lightning speed with a ton to do each day, so thanks for bearing with me.

And, let me reiterate, I want this process to be a collaboration and a dialogue. That’s one of the most exciting things about filmmaking for me! We're crowdfunding because we think it’s what Frank would’ve done, and because we want to do this with a community full of smart, passionate people who appreciate Frank Zappa enough to get behind this mission. So keep sending your editorial ideas, questions, suggestions, and in the event of flubs, your corrections! If we wanted to do this without the input of some of the biggest FZ fans out there, we wouldn’t come anywhere near Kickstarter. ;)

Whether or not I’m right about Frank and crowdfunding, here’s something I know he’d do: He'd tell you to get out there and vote.

Super Tuesday #2: FZ on rocking the vote

Here in the US, it’s another big day for our presidential elections, with primaries in several key states: Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and North Carolina.

If you live in one of those states, GET YOURSELF TO THE POLLS TODAY.
Or, in the words of FZ:

One of the things I loved most about Frank, outside of his art, was his activism. He’s known for taking on the government over censorship, but he was by no means anti-government. He was just pro-reform. Very pro-reform.

And, Frank's campaigns to involve young people in the democratic process spurred the entire Rock the Vote movement. Check out these PSAs he made, all the way back in 1985!

In fact, Frank was so passionate about voting that he also did something that few, if any, other rockers did: He set up voter registration booths right at his shows!

Here’s the scoop as written in the The San Bernadino County Sun, on Feb. 28, 1988:

(How mack-daddy is that?!)

So, in the spirit of WWZD, we're following his example and giving you an extra incentive to get out there and vote.

ONE BACKER, ONE VOTE… and some bad-ass FZ stickers

Vote in your state's Presidential primary elections, and we'll include a free set of ZAPPA FOR PRESIDENT stickers with your Kickstarter rewards.*

And before you ask: Here are the details on how to prove you voted and get those stickers. For now, just be sure to tweet or post a pic that proves you were at the polling booths, and use #WTFIFZ and #rockthevote. You'll do the rest after the Kickstarter ends.

That's all for now, but there's still a long way to go, so please: keep spreading the word. And please, if you're here in the United States: Go fucking vote. There's a lot riding on this election, and if you don't vote now, you can't complain later.

Rock on!!

Alex Winter

I like the tone and thrust of this update. Perhaps a bit complicated in terms of the reward but, I like the effort and I hope it makes a difference. As a Canadian, I would love to have a Frank for Prez sticker, but, I'll be okay. I'll just go play Caravan with a drum sola ;)

If we already voted/caucused are we SOL? I can give you a detailed report of Minnesota caucusing as well as a prolonged rant about why primary elections are preferable to caucuses.

I live in NY, and will be out of town for the primaries. I will tweet a picture of the absentee ballot.

Loving this Kickstarter campaign! Alex, how about some encouragement for sponsors in the UK to vote in the coming local elections and European Union referendum?

What about a disc of Frank's flubs?...
