Let's keep up the support in the final days!
Eggbert Egg Fulfils his Destiny is exciting and simple tale of one special egg’s pursuit of happiness.
A fun story that helps parents deepen their child's relationship with healthy food from day one.
My partner Laura and I asked ourselves this one night while reading a book to our daughter, Olivia, for the hundredth time. She was three months old. We started thinking, doodling and writing that night.
We appointed Olivia as "Chief Editor" on the project; whatever she liked, stayed; whatever she didn’t... didn’t. Three years on, Olivia's holding the first ever prototype copy of Eggbert Egg Fulfils his Destiny.
Eggbert Egg Fulfils his Destiny was born from the idea that children’s books have to be fascinating for both young, hungry minds and for the parents who have to read them again and again.
"A refreshing and intriguing story that successfully challenges ones imagination, whilst developing a healthy bond with food." - Kalle Egan Psychologist.
There are various pledge levels to make it easy for you to back us. Our book is the true focus so we have created rewards that complement the book's awesomeness. Here are a few more reasons to back us.
1. We have a finished prototype. With all the hard work already done all we need to do now is place a bulk printing order when we complete our campaign.
The final book will be 9.75 x 9.75 inches (about 2 inches bigger than our prototype) and we will have foil lettering on the front cover to add a touch of luxury to the classic, matte finish book.
2. LIMITED OFFER! Early Backers can create a one-of-a-kind cover with their child -Backers who pledge early for 1 or more copies can print out a fun Adult & Child Colouring Kit. The first 25 parent/child artists that submit their best cover spread to us will have their cover art custom printed with their names onto a dust jacket - for a completely one-of-a-kind book. CLICK HERE to find out more.
Children get to colour the cover (of course) and parents (as much as they'd like to colour in the cover), will have an intricate adult colouring back cover to play with.
3. Help children in need. Pledge $50 and above for a Hardcover book and an additional copy will be sent to a child in need, somewhere in the world.
We are partnering with the World Literacy Foundation, a global not-for-profit organisation working to lift children out of poverty through the power of literacy. Backers pledging $50 and above will get their own hardcover book and have another hardcover copy sent to the Foundation. Other pledge tiers also come with books to donate. Please read through each pledge tier and choose whichever feels right. It's an opportunity to directly impact and empower children in need. Our books will contribute to the 120,000 books they have already given globally. Remember that you can write charitable donations off on your tax return as they are tax deductible, so you are also doing good for yourself.
4. Listen to "The Sound of Eggs" immersive ASMR (look it up) concept album while reading our book. Each track follows Eggbert on his journey. Listen to it at https://soundcloud.com/eggbertegg/albums
You can also unlock the two secret bonus Remix tracks: 1. Energy Remix feat. MC Benedict, and 2. Dream Remix feat. DJ Florentine, by pledging $75 or more.
5. Pledge $150 to be one of 15 parents to have the authors read Eggbert to your child's class, over Skype.
6. Pledge $500 or more and receive the book (plus one book donated to a child in need) and a personalised egg shaped sterling silver necklace engraved with your child's initial. Designed and handmade by professional jewellery designer Laura Maddison. www.lauramaddison.com
7. And more... choose from our pledge tiers on the right!
The story began with Olivia’s extremely picky eating from an early age. My partner and I would try everything to get her to open her mouth and eat.
There’s a scene in the film Happy Gilmore where Kevin Nealon says to Adam Sandler, golf ball teetering on the edge of the hole,
“...the ball itself has its own energy, or lifeforce if you will. It’s natural environment is in the hole, so why don’t you send him home?”
I used to think about this line when I tried to feed Olivia and one day I said to her “the food wants to be eaten, it's home is in your belly!”. The struggle to get Olivia to eat, in turn, fed my creativity and helped form the foundation themes and morals of the story.
Everyone has memories from their childhood about things they did, saw and heard. When my partner and I thought about starting a book I (Alex) became particularly interested in my own childhood memories that had somehow lived on into my adult life. Fragments of stories and scenes, imagined and seen, in books, cartoons, television and films. What was it that made these stand out?
We repurchased all of our old favourites and with the power of the internet began a joyous nostalgia trip down Memory Lane. We re-discoverd haunting intros from programs like the BBC’s Wind in the Willows, scenes of Ichabod Crane facing the Headless Horseman in Disney’s Sleepy Hollow adaptation, detailed imagery from the pages of Anno’s Britain and the timeless writing of Roald Dahl alongside the beautifully imperfect illustrations of my hero Quentin Blake.
We realised that what appealed to us as children, still does today. Deeply imaginative, rich and sometimes even frightening storytelling made all the difference; pulled us in; made us learn. The rest that had been too shallow to make a strong enough emotional connection, we had forgotten.
It’s feedback that has kept us going. Rather than keeping the book a secret we have shared it with as many people as we can. Over the years I have been lucky enough to have access to some of the most talented creative minds at the creative agencies where I have worked.
I’ll never forget when I was asked to present something that inspires me to the entire creative team at R/GA Sydney. I chose to use the opportunity to gather professional feedback for the book. Though nerve-racking, the experience was hugely positive and empowering. I received praise and offers of support from many of my friends and colleagues. Since then they have been key in helping refine the story and art.
A big thank you goes out to our friends at Infinity Squared who have supported us and made such a beautiful film for our launch.
But the most important feedback has come from the powerful mothers group network my partner Laura is part of and the pre-school leaders and educators that we have trusted to help educate Olivia. In particular, child-care professional Amy Henley and child psychologist Kalle Egan.
"The story is unlike any children's book I have read before, and I've read a lot! I can tell already it's going to be a classic." - Amy Henley, Amy's Cubbyhouse
The wider family network of direct family and close friends who have all provided critical constructive criticism to raise the bar with the final product. It has truly been, from start to near-finish, a crowd-sourced effort.

Risks and challenges
Like any project of this nature, there are a few risks and challenges but we are doing everything we can to minimise them. As mentioned, this book has been tested on a wide range of parents, kids, teachers, carers and creative professionals. We have costed the printing with Print Ninja, a large international printer and distributor. Payments will be handled by Kickstarter. We’ve been conservative with the timeline but as with any Kickstarter, wild success (fingers crossed) could mean delays in fulfilment (let’s hope not). This aside, our project does not rest on any other unknowns.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
