9/5/12: We did it!! In just 5 days!! AMAZING!! Since we've got the rest of the month, here are a few milestones that are worth working towards:
$6000: One more thousand would cover Kickstarter's cut and most of the costs of printing and shipping books for rewards, leaving us with an actual $5000 to work with. Achieved! Yippee!
$7500: This amount would grant us the ability to use more far-away photo sites that require an overnight stay for everyone involved- things like the Alvord Desert or the Satsop Nuclear Plant. We did it!! We're going to the desert!!!
$10,000: This would REALLY let us go all out. We could hire professional models, bring in a make-up artist, and take the costuming to the next level. I would be able to stay longer, giving us more days to shoot and more opportunity to travel to distant sites.
Anything above and beyond: National tour baby!! I'll hop in my lil' doomsday device and bring the samples and books to trunk shows at LYSes across the country. There will very likely be refreshments. And knitting circles. And good times in general.
The year is 3015...
The polar ice caps have melted and the deserts expanded, leaving the Earth a seared, crusty Hell. Meanwhile, nuclear fallout has blocked the sun, plunging the world into a new ice age. (Yes, at the same time.) While we were distracted by the weather, the Singularity showed up and a race of intelligent computers enslaved mankind... who have all but died out thanks to a new, extra virulent virus created by zombie aliens. Really uptight, controlling zombie aliens. Who spy on us all the time. Oh, and they also drive tricked out cars around the desert and wear leather jackets.
The question on your mind?
"What should I knit?!"
Well! Thank your lucky ripped up cargo pants that back in 2012, a bunch of designers decided to answer that question for you.
"Doomsday Knits" will be a collection of garments and accessories inspired by the post-apocalyptic genre of film, literature, and fashion. We want to create cutting edge fashion pieces that are just as at-home in your closet today as they will be in the dystopian wastelands of tomorrow. And we want to do it with style and panache! With full-on editorial fashion photography shot everywhere from deserts to urban ruins, this book will be as beautiful and enjoyable to look at as the garments are to wear. With a healthy helping of tips, trivia, tidbits, and recommended media, it'll be just the thing for all you sci-fi-geek knitters out there as well as the fashion-obsessed.
The book will be available as a physical print book, an ebook, and via individual pattern downloads. All three formats are available as rewards- in some cases you may even get a better price this way!
But we need your help!
As you might know, on-location photography, styling, and gorgeous color printing don't come cheap! The stated "goal" is but a small fraction of the required production costs. We've teamed up with small publisher Cooperative Press, who are fantastic, but they can't cover it all. Your donation will contribute directly to:
- Travel costs
- Photographer fees
- Location fees
- Model fees
- Technical editing
- Photographic post-processing
- And if we're lucky- a nationwide tour with trunk show events!
We've got an amazing team of talented designers, we've got terribly gorgeous yarn and positively inspired patterns (many of which are already finished and certifiably awesome)- all we need is the means to bring them to you! Please help us make this book a reality!
