THE INITIAL GOAL HAS BEEN MET, SO NOW ONTO THE STRETCH GOALS–!!!
18 songs within 2 LPs containing material spanning the course of 11 years masterfully crafted into a story of survival, healing, and growth.
The video directly above is a little teaser of "I Am In Love" – one of the songs from the album–!

Hello! I’m Alex Mumford – songwriter and composer of Bardic Black: the chaos pixie dream disc. This record is a cyber-pop space ballad about the cycle of violence versus the cycle of love and how these affect individuals and, in turn, society at large.
Bardic Black is a being who is as old as Sound itself. And legend has it that this entity has cataloged all events of sound. This project – to which I will need your help funding – is the newest tale in that catalogue.
I have managed to snag Emily Lazar from The Lodge to aid me on my quest. She is an award winning mastering engineer who produced one of my most favorite sounding albums to date: The Shins – Wincing the Night Away. I also have some fantastic musicians performing on this record as well – most notably: Aimee Niemann on violin, Sharon Cha on cello, Josh Cergas on guitar, and even my even mom on select vocals – because: moms are cool :)!!
[MOMS ARE COOL–!]
Now, I am so excited for this thing I can barely stand it – but I am riddled with anxiety as well.
And that is because producing a record is just mind-blowingly expensive. The amount of time, and energy, and money that I’ve put into the project thus far is, I think, impossible to measure. But the music I’ve been creating I think is truly great and I am so ready to share it with you guys.
[MY GOAL and YOUR REWARDS]
My Kickstarter goal is just enough to keep the ball rolling to an album release date of November 1st, 2019. So when you fund this project, your donation will be going towards:
- The stem mastering of 18 songs for a double LP (overseen by Emily Lazar!)
- And the pressing of 300 vinyl copies of the album
My goal of $7,500 USD leaves only a dent into the costs that I am expecting to pay. Your generosity can help me meet and maybe even exceed this goal – and your help will certainly not go unrewarded.
Here are your rewards. Thank you for taking the time learning about this project. I appreciate you.
Vulnerability, Change, Empathy, and re-experiencing Love are major themes here. This body of work serves as an expression of the suffering that my mom, my sister, and I endured as survivors of domestic violence and abuse – and the long road to letting go, to forgive, to mend old wounds, and to hold onto that spark of Hope even when one thinks it gone. It takes pieces from my childhood, my early adult life as a soldier in the Iraq War, and life experiences and observations after the war through to today – and blends it into a fantasy adventure that is both tragic and joyous. I aim to carry the listener along with me on this fantastic journey – that by its end (80 minutes of music–!), if listened straight through, there might be some fatigue – but with it a sense of reward and some things to think and feel about. This record is open and vulnerable but with moments of panache – and hopefully inspiring and healing to those who listen.
The vinyl itself will be pressed on a unique color that will only be available with this edition. These copies will serve as merch for our live performances – but will also be used as promotional tools and gifts to be sent out to musicians and artists that I may not know personally, but that I wish to have a working relationship with – like for touring, collaborating, and such.
I really want the entire experience to be as wonderful as possible for you – from the songwriting, to the aural quality, to the artwork, to the vinyl, and sleeve design. I am looking into foil options on the outside and inside sleeves as well, but foil is looking like something we could pursue more realistically should I be enabled to exceed my goal!
I don’t think there is any slight exaggeration when I say that I have built my whole life up for this release and I want to share it with you – and I hope that you will be one of the first to join the Bardic Black community–!
Again, thank you for taking the time to learn more about this project. I really appreciate that.
Risks and challenges
November 1st is coming quickly and quite a bit of work remains before we can get ahold of these physical records. I am presently in the mixing phase and intend to have all songs completed and sent to Emily Lazar by late July/early August. It will take her and her team approximately five working days to complete the stem mastering (a very thorough and detailed kind of mastering). Emily has not heard the complete album, but this is a projection based off of the materials I have sent her way.
This would bring us into the early part of August. At this point, the master lacquers (which will also be made at The Lodge) will be shipped to the pressing facility to be duplicated. During this time, I will be sent a sample pressing and must confirm that the record sounds as wonderful as it should, so the whole process from initial submission to receiving the complete bundle of pressings can take anywhere from 2 to 4 months. The places where I intend to do the printing and pressing work with can accomplish this within a seven to ten week turnaround time respectively based on present projections.
This would bring us into October – which is the month I will ship you your wonderful rewards. For higher tier rewards, you may receive the record before the bonus items – but for shipping costs sake and general happiness, I will aim to deliver all rewards to you at the same time whenever possible.
Also, artwork is still in its development stage but is projected to be submitted to the printing company well before the vinyls will have been screened and pressed – however being that the artwork is not yet finished, I think it only fair to mention that in this section as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
