I’m a monster. You’re a monster. Big and small, young and old, we are all monsters sometimes.

We all have hobbies and habits, rules and routines, and quirks and qualities that make us one-of-a-kind. It's these endearing (and yes, sometimes irritating) qualities that ultimately make us human - even if we may seem a little monstrous on occasion.

From waking up on the wrong side of the bed in the morning to not flossing before returning to bed each night, each day presents us with plenty of opportunities to be monstrous, and it's these monsters that are captured in Monstrous Me

In Monstrous Me, all the funky feelings, horrendous habits and terrible traits we have are exemplified by silly, strange and seductive monsters (and monstresses!).

Their stories, told in rhyming verse, capture their origins and shortcomings, their triumphs and downfalls, as we start to understand how such monsters came to be. Below are some examples of the monsters, along with a verse of their story. In Monstrous Me, each monster's story will be 4-6 verses long.

The book features 30 illustrated monsters, like the Snoozer Sloth,…

.. who revels in its sleep and uses all its crafty powers to keep from waking up each morning.

Monstrous Me reveals our monstrous qualities from those first daylight moments with the likes of the Snoozer Sloth or the Morning Slug, to those mid-day struggles with Busy Bodies and Gossip Pollinators, to after-dinner cravings of the Late Night Snake.

Who doesn't get a little carried away at the gym in the morning, and turn into one of those those athletic monsters who brag about how buff they are? If you've ever taunted or flaunted your toned buns, you were a little bit like The Flexibully.

Our monstrous traits can really blossom during the day. For those daydreamers who just can't decide what they want to be, there's The Wannabeetle...

Kids will gravitate to the silly sounds and strange names of each exotic monster, as they read the lyrical, rhyming stories of their origins.

Each monster has a gorgeous, full-color illustration that will delight kids (of all ages). The whimsical, colorful creatures are a wonderful representation, and may even convince kids it's okay to be a little bit monstrous...

We know you’ll love the beasts, too, and see a little bit of yourself -- or maybe a friend or loved one -- in each one of them. Who doesn't have a friend who schedules 15-minute phone calls six weeks from now?

They over schedule so much that they almost seem like an Ogre Scheduler...

Or maybe you have been haunted by those projects you start, but never finish? If so, you definitely have a little Startvaark inside of you...

We've all been there. In fact, I'm launching this Kickstarter to separate myself from my own Startvaark past.

In all, Monstrous Me will feature 30 illustrated monsters and their stories. With more monsters than hours in the day, you’re sure to find one to call your own. Here's a sneak peek at some of the others:

  • Loch Fitness Monster - Who hasn't let a bad picture ruin their day?
  • Gossip Pollinator - This flitting, ditzy monster lives to spread gossip from group to group.
  • The Snuffagus - If you've ever refused to stay home when you've had the sniffles, you may be this baddie.
  • The Forgeti - He's forgotten more names, numbers, and dates than he'll ever know.
  • The Toldjaso - This patronizing parrot will remind you time and time again of what she knew all along.
  • The Late Night Snake - Who can avoid the siren song of the fridge’s white light?
  • Busy Body - To this monster, looking busy is a full-time job.
  • Chit-Chat Killer Cobra - What lengths would you go to stop chit-chat and small talk?

About the illustrator

Elizabeth Winter is an illustrator and artist working in South Africa. She knows her way around a drawing tablet and occasionally a canvas. She was born a human, raised to be human and likes to think it all paid off. She loves soft cuddly things, and paying attention to the details.

As a professional graphic artist, she has extensive skill in varying styles as well as mediums. With her experience as an graphic artist and illustrator of educational children's books around the world, she draws and paints her way through life to afford internet and bread. In that order.

About the author

Alex Jeffries is a producer and writer living in Los Angeles. In the television world, he's produced talk shows for NBC, FOX, Participant Media, CNN, and various pilots. He's also currently writing a digital series for Thomas & Friends.

Ever since he heard a loud 'BOO!' as a 7-year-old that woke him up in the middle of the night, he's been a firm believer in monsters.

Since first connecting in January this year, Elizabeth and Alex have collaborated on the stories and design for each monster in Monstrous Me (they've also talked a lot about fairy tales, but that's a story for another time).

Monstrous Me makes a great gift for the human-sized monsters in your life. Maybe your coworker is a little monstrous, your roommate needs a few hints on acceptable behavior, or your siblings are getting out of control.

It's also a great book for bite-size monsters. Kids will love it, even though these monstrous stories are slightly more challenging than your average picture book. The monster names, rhyming stories and vibrant colors makes it suitable for kids, enjoyable for adults, and edible for monsters.

Finally, it's for the monster in you ("she had the monster inside her all along!"). We can't all be our best every day. Some days are harder than other. Some days we just need to be left alone. If you've ever felt just a little bit monstrous, this book is for you.

The stories are written, the monsters are illustrated, and now we just need your help to release them all into the world.

In order to print 250 hardbound books featuring 30 monsters, in full color, we're seeking $5,000. The funds raised from this Kickstarter are all reserved for actually turning these little monstrosities into a hardbound book.

The funds raised will pay for the books to be printed, for the cover to be designed, for the digital versions to be professionally created, shipping, and the fees associated with using Kickstarter and Amazon payments. Below is an estimate of the breakdown to get a beautiful, 64-page hardbound book into your monstrous little hands.

  • Printing hardbound books ($2,800)
  • Kickstarter/Amazon Payment fees ($500)
  • Shipping ($1,000)
  • Cover design ($450)
  • eBook production ($250)

I know, I know - so far, this has all been about Monstrous ME, and not enough about Monstrous YOU. This campaign to get this book printed is pretty simple - I want you to have a book, in your hands. The money raised from this campaign makes that possible.

Over the months of writing Monstrous Me, I have whittled down well over 100 monsters to my absolute Top 40. In working with an independent publisher, and weighing design options, the most reasonable approach was to raise $5,000 for a 30-monster book, because it meant I could release it in an appropriately big size, and give Elizabeth's beautiful illustrations the proper amount of space.

But... that's not the end of this story. While this Kickstarter is geared to ordering 250 books with a campaign for $5,000, there's a possibility we go over that amount...

If we hit $6,000, we'll be able to publish an 84-page book with 40 monsters. The additional 10 monsters would include The Shoe Show Off, The Grubby Grabber, the Surpriseagator, and others. What's more - this little monster won't have to choose his favorites. They'll all be released into the world!

Any additional money raised over $6,000 will allow me to:

  • Print additional books, which will go on sale to the public so I can continue to spread the book, and any success it may have will be put into future storytelling ventures.
  • Be reimbursed for the costs of the illustrations. These costs were paid out-of-pocket ahead of the campaign. I strongly believe in this project, and felt strongly in Elizabeth's artwork and wanted to make sure she got paid fairly whether or not this campaign succeeded.
  • See if this is a legitimate, repeatable model for publishing future collections of stories. I currently have stories for two other collections, and I’d love to find a way to create them economically while still maintaining creative control and collaborating with incredible artists.

Risks and challenges

The writing and art are done, we have selected a printer, and lined up the professional services to complete the cover and digital versions of the book. I'm confident this book will be completed on time, but there are a few risks and challenges to note.

Possible printing delays - I’m using a professional printer that has been recommended to me by authors of other illustrated books. I’m confident they will deliver in a timely manner. Still, this is my first book, so there may be some unanticipated steps.

Technical snafus - In addition to having the book printed, there will be digital editions (Kindle, ePub, PDF), and though I am hiring a professional designers to handle this process, there may be some production delays.

Learning curve - This is my first self-published book. I am learning a lot. Fortunately, unlike the "Learning Wyrm" (who you’ll read about soon!), I am not paralyzed by indecision and you’ll have a book in your hands soon.
