Bill Plympton and Tom Kenny Stopmotion by Mike Gaiss

Why a Documentary on Bill Plympton?

When it comes to independent animators, Bill Plympton is the undisputed king. When Plympton began his animation career over 25 years ago, he was already an acclaimed syndicated illustrator and cartoonist. Since then he has become a major name in the animation and film world. Plympton has earned two Academy Award nominations, and brings hundreds of loyal fans to each convention and film festival which he attends all over the world. Without Plympton paving the way, there wouldn't be countless aspiring animators, film makers and artist point to and say, "Yes! You can be independent AND make a career doing this!"

Being independent means working without a big studio and often spending your own money on your movies. Creatively it means you have full control and freedom.

Film maker Alexia Anastasio was inspired by Plympton's spirit.

Adventures In Plymptoons! is a year and half in the making and is currently in post production. Anastasio followed and interviewed Plympton around New York City, San Diego Comic Con, his hometown of Portland, Oregon, various film festivals and universities where he would perform his master class. Interviews in the documentary, include Terry Gilliam, Keith Carradine, Martha Plimpton, Matthew Modine, Michael Showalter, Ed Begely Jr., "Weird Al” Yankovic and Moby, as well as family members, colleagues, long time friends and many more.

"I envision this film to be for everyone ranging from the die hard Plympton fan to anyone who loves to laugh at cartoons," says Anastasio. Plympton himself fully supports the project and the young director behind it.

Alexia is no novice to film making. Anastasio is also an actress in addition to being a director. She was featured in HBO's Bored to Death, VH1 “If you like...” commerical and Vetiver "Everyday" music video. She edited the feature documentary, "Vampira: The Movie," associate produced, "The Wild World of Ted V. Mikels," and produced and starred in mockumentary, "7 Deadly Sins: Inside the Ecomm Cult" among others.

Who is Bill Plympton?

A native of Portland, Oregon Plympton lived what he refers to as a “Huck Finn” type of childhood on the Clackamas River. Portland’s frequent rainy days led Plympton to spend hours indoors drawing. He would also watch television and making his siblings laugh by providing his own commentary. After graduating from Portland State College with a degree in Art, Plympton took himself and his dreams to New York City. There, he worked as an illustrator and had his art featured in publications such as the New Yorker, Hustler, Penthouse and Playboy.

In 1988, Plympton was nominated for an Academy Award for his short film, “Your Face.”
Soon after, he was offered a position working at Disney. He turned it down. That decision pointed his future toward independent filmmaking. With no studio support, funds were in short supply. Fortunately, Plympton found critical acclaim for his films existed abroad. He earned not only prestigious awards at film festivals like Cannes and Annecy, but also worldwide distribution for his films. Bill Plympton’s career as an independent filmmaker began to take shape. Subsequent successes earned him a second Oscar nomination in 2005, as well as directing and producing numerous short films and feature films including “The Tune” (1992 ),“I Married a Strange Person” (1997), “Mutant Aliens” (2001), “Hair High” (2004) “Idiots and Angels” (2008).
