About

We have until May 13th to raise $15,000! THIS IS AN ALL-OR-NOTHING DEAL - If we do not reach that goal, then no funds will be transferred! If everyone who sees this page donates even just a few dollars, then we will be able to do this. Help us get this project off the ground!

Synopsis

Jesper Kenn Olsen is approaching the finale of a four-year-long ambitious goal to run around the world. He has gone places that very few people have gone before, and seen the world at a runner's pace- roughly 26 miles a day.

This documentary chronicles primarily the second half of Jesper's journey: from the southernmost tip of South America to the northern shores of Newfoundland. Combining professional HD footage taken through much of his journey with Jesper's personal camera while on the run, this documentary explores not only Jesper's personal ambitions to achieve an unprecedented goal, but paints a unique, intimate portrait of the world.

Who is Jesper Olsen?

Jesper is an ultra-runner from Denmark. He started running at the age of 12, and by 15, he had completed his first marathon. Since then he has become a force to be reckoned with in the ultra-running community, constantly breaking new barriers and seeing how far he can go. In the late 90s, he started breaking national records: the 50km, 100km, 100 miles, 12-hours, 24-hours, 48-hours, and 6-day.

The world run is his most ambitious goal yet. Unsatisfied with the restriction of traditional challenges, Jesper set his sights on the longest distance run ever dreamed of: a run around the world.

In 2005 he completed the first fully documented world run. His current project aims to nearly double the distance of that endeavor, with a goal of 40,000km.

The Route

Jesper's route runs North-South, South-North: from northern Scandinavia to South Africa, then from Punta Arenas, Chile to Newfoundland, Canada.

Ultra-running

Ultra-running is an extreme sport that encompasses any type of running longer than a marathon. This often comes in the form of distances ranging from 50 kilometers to 100 miles, or timed races ranging from 24 hours to 6 days. Still a relatively small sport, the ultra-running community is composed of driven athletes unfettered by the traditional meaning of long distance running.

What this documentary is really about

  • Physically- Jesper undergoes an immense amount of physical strain every day. We examine whether the human body is capable of running such distance for such an extended amount of time, and how far one can really take extreme sport.
  • Mentally- Even more formidable than the physical aspect of the journey is the mental aspect. Where does Jesper's motivation come from? Can his determination last? What's going through his mind every day?
  • Culturally- On this world run alone, Jesper will have passed through four continents and a multitude of cultures and traditions in a way that almost no one has ever done before. Whether in the remote desert of Sudan, in the jungles of Colombia, or even in the streets of New York City, Jesper has crossed into the most varied places of our world and made friends with those who inhabit them.

All the aspects of Jesper's journey will be covered: from his day-to-day struggle, to the world through which he passes, to the people he meets along the way. Part travelogue, part sports documentary, and part commentary on human identity, it will examine human achievement and investigate how defined personal and political boundaries really are.

What we have done

Our crew has already filmed extensively in South America, particularly in the countries of Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Jesper himself has taken a large amount of video with his personal camera, which we plan on interspersing with the HD footage in the final documentary.

What we plan to do

Jesper is on the home stretch. For the last three months of his journey, we plan on being there to document it. We will also be documenting a sub-plot in Jesper's stop in New York City, during which he will participate in a grueling six day race- an event of unimaginable difficulty in itself.

How the funds will be used

While much of the film has already been shot, it is far from complete. We need your help for:

  • Equipment costs
  • Food and living expenses while on the road
  • Post Production: editing, graphics, color correction, sound mixing and design
  • Distribution and marketing

WE WILL ONLY RECEIVE THE FUNDS IF WE REACH OUR GOAL OF $15,000!

The Crew

Jamie Fulbrook - Director, Producer, Cinematographer

Hailing from England, Jamie has a degree in Multimedia and Diploma in Arts: Film & Video. Addicted to adventure travel, photography and modern technology, ethical living and creative arts, Jamie has spent years on the road in a variety of pursuits. These include opening a school in Cameroon and writing for UK publications about his journeys hitch-hiking from England to South Africa and riding a motorbike 5,000 km across the very mountainous southern regions of China.

Jamie contributes a deep understanding and familiarity with digital media communications, plus a life career in film production and digital media, logistics and management, and finally several years of experience working and traveling  in foreign countries.

Alex Hamlin - Co-producer, Cinematographer

An avid traveler and endurance athlete, Alex graduated with a film degree from Montana State University in 2009. Since then, he has lived in several different countries and worked on films of a wide range of topics. He now lives in Washington, DC where he is working on a documentary about living with HIV in South Africa along with this project, which will be the first that he has produced.

Craig Bilham - Editor

Craig has an absolute knowledge of digital video technologies; he is already renowned as a brilliant and unique up-and-coming film editor. Plus, he is a highly skilled cameraman and team contributor in the field, and will surely bring to the project an essential and unchallenged knowledge of social media networking.

Each member of the crew has a very strong and participatory interest in extreme sports, travel/culture and ultimately the great outdoors, and without this passion, the project would lack its foundation for success.
