A Tofu Tail is a story-driven puzzle game about a man turned to tofu by a deceptive fox spirit, the Kitsune! Mr. Tofu must traverse the surreal, puzzle realms of the foxes in search of a way to break his curse.

At launch, A Tofu Tail will be available DRM-free for PC, Mac, and Linux.
If A Tofu Tail is accepted for Steam Greenlight, a Steam version will also be available. We also have plans for other platforms (i.e. console) as well, pending approvals and funding.
The core gameplay mechanic in A Tofu Tail is a color-based restriction on movement. Mr. Tofu is only able to move to tiles of the same color as himself. Mr. Tofu can change his color by absorbing the properties of the various elemental orbs floating around. (Just like real tofu!)
Every tile can only be traversed once, so you should definitely think ahead!
Mr. Tofu encounters many strange creatures and obstacles as he moves through the various Kitsune realms. The territorial Mr. Tengu, the club bouncer Mr. Oni, and the thirsty Mr. Kappa...
Mr. Tofu has his soul split from his body in the Spirit Realm where he must learn to control his wayward spirit; and he also breaks science in the Spacetime Realm!
And let us not look past the emergent challenges that arise out of the combination of these characters and obstacles.
One thing that we wanted to keep consistent, even with all of the additional gameplay elements, is that the player’s controls remain the same throughout the game: move Mr. Tofu.
No additional controls need to be introduced to the player as they progress through the game, keeping the game concise and simple, but still with increasingly interesting puzzle complexity and challenge!
Our musician, Tom, has been hard at work to create an engaging and elaborate original soundtrack with over 16 songs and accompanying ambient tracks! He has been composing the music with a mix of chiptunes and rock/metal elements. Take a listen:

The aesthetic of A Tofu Tail is very much influenced by Japanese Ukiyo-e wood prints and paintings, with our own twists and cartoonization to make it uniquely its own style.
A Tofu Tail also has a quirky yet intricately weaved narrative to be told.
Mr. Tofu, originally a wandering woodsman, happens upon a Kitsune shrine in the woods.
Here he meets a mysterious woman who offers him riches and power. Mr. Tofu foolishly accepts this power without a thought of the consequences and is very easily tricked by the Kitsune woman.
From here, Mr. Tofu travels all through the Kitsune’s Domain, making friends, meeting strange creatures, and unique characters.
We at alchemedium want to build an elaborate world, both for Mr. Tofu and the Kitsune, but also for every game that we develop in the future. We are really excited to plan and create this huge collective universe over all of our games and stories. We assemble this all into a compendium of characters, locales, and lore - what we are dubbing as the alchemedium Metaverse!

We have come a long way in creating A Tofu Tail, being able to produce most of the game by our own talents, generous friends and family, and money from our own pockets. But now we are unable to continue financing the project ourselves, especially with the larger upcoming costs.
Making a game is expensive and the business side is far from easy, but we have a team of passionate gamers, artists, and musicians whose goal is to create an awesome experience for you! We want to continue to create games and do what we love! This is that first step!
Now we need your help sharing Mr. Tofu’s journey so that he can reach his goal!
Our main goal of this Kickstarter is to raise money for marketing and events, the additional production costs, and software licensing and distribution channel fees. Any additional funding over the goal will go towards pushing the game to other platforms (pending approvals and such).
alchemedium is a Pittsburgh-based independent game studio, who make it their mission to design gameplay focused on the player's experience; to be engaging, easy to pick up, and immersive - even in small, short bursts of play. The team also wishes to weave an extensive lore base and multiverse from the story lines of their games, media, and other content.
Risks and challenges
As far as risks go, we have very few; we will have no problem finishing the game. Production of the game is very close to completion and with a little more work, we will have a complete game. The difference with being funded versus not funded will be: when will we be able to release A Tofu Tail and with what additional fancy art, audio, and polish?
Funding will go towards spreading the word about the game and making things more polished and fancy. Any excess funding will go to production on additional platforms.
That being said, this is alchemedium’s first commercial project, so we have (and are likely to) face more hurdles that we haven’t seen yet. We promise to put all effort and transparency on these potential challenges!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
