About

THE STORY

Alba was inspired by the true story of a personal friend of mine in Mexico. It tells the story of a kid from rural Mexico who seeks to provide for his single mom and siblings by joining a drug cartel. When he realizes what that means, he flees and tries to start a new life in the city, cutting off all contact from his family for their safety. But his guilt and fear won't let him move on.

Alba is the story of hundreds of Mexican youths caught between poverty and the cartels. It's the story of all mankind's battle with fear and regret. It's about accepting that we can't change our pasts, but can find release and change our futures.

It's a story in honor of my friend who lived through such things, and who was never heard from again...

THE VISION

This is a story that needs to be heard by audiences in both Mexico and the United States. The struggle against the cartels carries on in Mexico even though the news seems to have forgotten about it. This short film tells one facet of that struggle, while also standing as a memorial for the friend of mine- and the hundreds or thousands of others- who lived it.

Furthermore, this film is about unity. By bringing cast and crew together from the two countries, we hope to begin connections between filmmakers and artists in central Mexico and Northwest Arkansas. Art is a unifier where language, cultural differences, politics, etc can be dividers. We hope the production of this film can help push that forward, just as we hope the film itself can tap into human emotion and connection that is overarching in all cultures.

We hope to open a window into a part of Mexican existence that is little known to the United States and even to a lot of urban Mexico. We hope to convey the beauty that is Mexico juxtaposed with the pain that hundreds of its youth suffer every day. We hope to create an impacting film that will linger in our audience's minds long after the end credits have rolled.

THE PROJECT

This short film will have a run time of 13-15 minutes. It will be filmed on location in Puebla, Mexico and El Chico, Hidalgo, Mexico during 10 days in July.

A crew of four members will travel down from the United States and work alongside Mexican crew members and actors, as well as Hollywood actress Bianca A. Santos, who has officially joined the project. Having read the script and heard the project idea, she volunteered to act in the film pro bono.

The film's two major characters are cast, and locations are confirmed.

WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?

Our American crew has purchased plane tickets and has the majority of gear purchased or rented and ready to go, thanks to the first round of donors who helped with pre-production expenses. But we still need funding to make the film happen on the ground in order to cover:

Meals for cast and crew

Ground transportation

Costume expenses

Housing for our lead actor for the duration of the shoot

This film is getting made one way or another. Our cast and crew are committed.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge lies in the fact that we can't really reshoot once we wrap on set. However, our three department heads (Director, Assistant Director and Director of Photography) have worked together extensively, and our actors are experienced, so we expect to turn out good footage. We have so far!

The other challenge will be on set, as some crew members speak only English and some of the actors speak only Spanish. But while that's a challenge, it's also what we want: to overcome barriers through our common passion for the story and the art of film. Just as we hope to do through the finished film itself.
