About this project
Welcome to my Kickstarter Project. My name is Alana Riley and I'm a visual + digital artist living in Rhode Island. Every so often the mood strikes me to watch footage from my childhood, and I find my 3 year old high-pitched voice saying, “Dad! I wanna use the camera! Can I film now?". I don’t know if my parents ever recognized “film” as my first word, but if I were the betting kind, I’d bet “film” was it. The first digital camera I purchased was a Canon PowerShot 2MP for $400. My next camera was a Canon PowerShot 3MP for $300. I soon moved into the Rebel world for $900, and wouldn’t you know, now that I have the highest-quality camera I’ve ever owned at 18MP, my iPhone4 5MP camera is what I use 99% of the time. I’m able to capture people, places and things I otherwise wouldn’t have been prepared to capture. That’s without a doubt what I love the most about mobile photography — there are hardly any limitations. There’s no bulky gear to carry + you can remain inconspicuous to the world around you.
Can a story really be told within a single frame? Absolutely. But it's a very different type of story. There is no beginning, middle or end. You're only given a tiny piece of the puzzle, and it's with that piece you must assemble the full narrative. This book contains 150 of those moments – of tiny pieces that belong to larger stories – each of which has been captured through the medium of mobile photography. I've selected my favorite photos from the past 365 days to be part of this collection. Each photo captures the details people frequently miss in passing, and the texture, color, lighting, motion and movement of those things.
You generous pledges will be used for costs associated with the design + printing process to make the first 100 copies of this self-published book a reality! Once I have the printed copies in hand, I'll be shipping a handful to galleries + reviewers across the U.S and selling the remaining copies to the public online and in local Rhode Island stores. If the demand is there, more shall be printed! I'd love to get the book picked up by a publisher, but one step at a time, and this is definitely a wonderful first step - all thanks to you!. A few of the Backer rewards include getting your name, work and website published in the book, so you should get a decent amount of exposure.
With each pledge level comes something tangible, or something digital that you could print. I want to share with you a piece of my work – something that you can bring into your home and make part of your world.
Here are some snapshots of the prototype of the book (which I just received in the mail!) as well as snapshots of the mobile version of the book.
I'd love to hear from you if you have any feedback or questions, so do feel free to drop me a line. Also, drop by the Project Website to see more shots from the book and a list of Backers. Thank You so very much for taking the time to review this project and for your support!
