HOW IS YOUR MONEY INVESTED?

WHY SUPPORT US?

Through our Maasai jewelry brand ALAMA and this photo & video project we will:

- EMPOWER MAASAI WOMEN ARTISANS &  PROMOTE THEIR CRAFTSMANSHIP WORLDWIDE

- CO-FINANCE THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PAMOJA SECONDARY SCHOOL IN MAASAI LAND

Help us to give a voice to the Maasai women who might otherwise not be heard.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

the ALAMA-team

WHAT IS ALAMA?

ALAMA is a culture-to-wear jewelry brand that empowers a group of Maasai women artisans from Northern Tanzania. Our jewelry brand is supported by the non-governmental organization Africa Amini Alama, which improves the living conditions of the Maasai tribe of Tanzania by providing free health care and social support, as well as free educational programs.

Our jewelry pieces are handmade by women artisans in Tanzania and include glass pearl beads, metal, vegan leather and recycled plastic and rice bag thread. Each design is unique, so each jewelry piece will vary in shape, size and color.

Committed to both the preservation of the Maasai tribe's cultural heritage and sustainable craftsmanship (see Vogue.com article), ALAMA's jewelry collection grows organically, with unique and handmade statement pieces, instead of seasonal offerings, and with a zero waste policy.

WHO IS BEHIND ALAMA?

ALAMA was founded by set designer & installation artist Nini Gollong and writer & editor Elisabeta Tudor, who have been working in the fashion industry for the past 15 years. Together with the Maasai artisan and brand manager Ekaely Pallangyo, we are currently working with 35 Maasai women from 3 villages (Ngabobo, Madebe, Lekirumuni) at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 35 women artisans who design and produce ALAMA's one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces are members of the Maasai tribe of the upland steppes of Tanzania. "ALAMA" means "symbol" in Swahili – each traditional Maasai jewelry design from our collection is a cultural symbol, as it holds a specific cultural value.

WHAT IS THIS CAMPAIGN FOR?

In order to promote Maasai craftsmanship on an international level, we'd like to travel to Tanzania to portrait and film each and every Maasai woman artisan who designs jewelry for ALAMA. The Maasai women artisans who work with us have already approved this project and are eager to make it happen!

We need your help to invite the photographer Ilyes Griyeb (Le Monde, Financial Times) and film director Gavin Youngs from "The Apiary" (i-D, Nowness, Aesop), as well as DOP & cameraman Phillip Kaminiak (Calvin Klein, Aesop) to portrait and film the Maasai women artisans who make ALAMA happen.

The results of this photo & video production will be showcased in an exhibition in Paris. Our aim is to turn this unique project into a traveling exhibition throughout 2018/2019, which will introduce the meaningful craftsmanship of the Maasai women artisans to an international audience.

All benefits from the exhibition sales will be donated to the NGO Africa Amini Alama, which improves the living conditions of the Maasai tribe of Northern Tanzania by providing them with free health care, social help and free educational programs. More specifically, the benefits of the Kickstarter jewelry sales and exhibition sales will be invested into the PAMOJA SECONDARY SCHOOL, an educational project supported by the NGO and initiated by the Maasai themselves.

WHO IS BEHIND THIS CAMPAIGN?

HOW DOES THIS CAMPAIGN EMPOWER MAASAI WOMEN?

The aim of this campaign is to give a voice to all the women artisans who make our ALAMA jewelry, as they might otherwise not be heard and respected by the international fashion industry as they ought to be.

Meri, Mama Meri and Martha (Maasai artisans).
Meri, Mama Meri and Martha (Maasai artisans).

The 35 Maasai women who design and produce jewelry for ALAMA are their own bosses. They all benefit from higher revenues, as we've built a sustainable business platform for them, which allows them to showcase and sell their handmade jewelry online and in multi-brand stores – and to benefit economically from it. We want to put each Maasai woman artisan who works for ALAMA into the limelight with this unique photography and video exhibition project that values them personally, as well as their meaningful craftsmanship

Lea Olewaya, Ngarisi and Sabina (Maasai artisans)

Each purchase of an ALAMA jewelry piece on our e-shop and here on Kickstarter allows us to support the Maasai women artisans financially, as part of the benefits go straight into their pockets.

HOW DOES ALAMA FIGHT AGAINST CULTURAL APPROPRIATION?

In recent years, "cultural appropriation" has been on everybody's lips. Luckily, the Maasai tribes of Tanzania and Kenya who have been affected by this form of "design colonialism", are slowly but firmly starting to reclaim their cultural heritage

Maasai women artisans working on ALAMA jewelry pieces.
Maasai women artisans working on ALAMA jewelry pieces.

In fact, the Maasai suffer from vast cultural appropriation and overall pillaging of their heritage: over a thousand companies sell products ranging from clothes to cars that use the Maasai name or symbols illegally.

Namnyaki, Theresia, Raheli and Tikisaeli. Maasai artisans who work for ALAMA.
Namnyaki, Theresia, Raheli and Tikisaeli. Maasai artisans who work for ALAMA.

ALAMA believes there is a neo-colonial power imbalance in this dynamic that needs to be fought against – “the powerful appropriate the powerless” – and that fashion brands who misuse indigenous cultures should face legal actions.

Stella, Leah, Grace, Sarah and Salomé. Maasai women artisans who work for ALAMA.
Stella, Leah, Grace, Sarah and Salomé. Maasai women artisans who work for ALAMA.

By supporting a project like ours – an exhibition that does not appropriate or merely aestheticize, but that empowers the Maasai culture on an international level – you help us to support Maasai craftsmanship, and, more importantly, you join us in paying a most respectful tribute to each Maasai woman artisan who works for ALAMA.

We believe that design methods and craftsmanship should be decolonialized in all sectors, especially in the fashion and luxury industry.

We believe that indigenous cultural heritage, such as the one of the Maasai people, should be valued, respected, protected and empowered on an international level.

We believe that you, our potential donor, should get to know the Maasai women artisans who are behind ALAMA and that your contribution will help to introduce their meaningful craftsmanship to the world.

And mostly, we believe that your support can help us make a difference.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts,

Ashe oleng ("Maa"- Maasai language),

the ALAMA-team

NO RISKS, ONLY BUDGET CHALLENGES!

Why do we need 22k, you ask?

In order to realize our photo & video and exhibition project, our team of 5 people (Nini, Elisabeta, Ilyes, Gavin and Phillip – Ekaely is already in Tanzania) aims to spend 2 weeks at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, where we will work with the Maasai women artisans who are behind ALAMA and produce the photo and video content, as well as the gifts detailed in this campaign. This unique project implies substantial costs, which is why we count on your support to make this dream come true.

Among these costs are:

4 800 € for the production of the Kickstarter gifts
—> including all our gifts (ALAMA jewelry, photo prints and Maasai craft…)

4 510€ for professional photo & video equipment and processing
--> including rental and insurance fees for the camera and sound gear (cameras, lenses, tripods, microphones...), film rolls, hard drives, HD scans, sound mix and color grade...

4 310€ for transport
--> AR flight tickets for 5 people from Paris/Berlin to Kilimanjaro and jeep and motorbike rentals to access the secluded Maasai land for photo & video production (public transport is non-existent)

3 500€ for models
--> the Maasai women artisans will be paid a fee for modeling for our photo & video project (100€ per artisan for 35 women)

2 470€ for accommodation & food
--> guest houses and meals for 5 people

2 180€ for the Kickstarter fee
--> mandatory fee

230€ for a translator (Maa to English) + a chef

which represents a total of 22 000€

We hope that this gives you a better understanding of the costs implied by this meaningful project! Don't hesitate to contact us personally for more information.

Thank you for your support,
Ekaely, Nini, Elisabeta, Ilyes, Gavin and Phillip
