In 2017 and early 2018, Alabaster Co completed its first and second projects, Alabaster | The Gospels and Alabaster | Psalms. Scripture is already beautiful, but we asked the question, what if how it was read was also beautiful? We imagined that it could transform an already beautiful story into a beautiful reading experience. Today, we're excited to announce our third project.
We Started with a Question
Can we design a beautiful notebook that inspires people to pray, reflect, and create? We wanted a companion to our Bibles, a notebook that wasn’t just pieces of paper put together, but a piece of artwork itself.
Many spiritual disciplines or practices of faith involve praying, reflecting, and even creating. Often we go to the random notebooks we buy off of Amazon or the notepad app on our phones, but we think that our prayers, our ideas, and our reflections of God deserve to be placed in a notebook that’s not only functional, but beautiful. One that you can hold, touch, remember and experience for the rest of your life.
Many of the world’s leading notebook brands have focused on designing their notebooks to be more durable, more task-oriented, and making you more productive. These aren’t bad things – but in this rush to make a perfect tool we’ve forgotten what a great notebook is all about.
We believe a notebook shouldn’t just be a tool – it must be a beautifully crafted object that inspires us towards reflection, contemplation, and deeper spiritual thought.
Made From the Best
- Produced with advanced machinery from Germany: Heidelberg Stahlfolder Machines and Kolbus Case Machine
- Japanese high-grade acid-free paper
- Forest Stewardship Council Certified Factory
Designed to Inspire Prayer, Reflection, and Creativity
To achieve this in the Alabaster Notebook, we’ve selected materials that you won’t find in an average notebook.
For our cover, we've decided to use a Leatherette Hard Cover in a charcoal gray.
Gray is the new white. For our interior pages, we’re using a high-quality 80lb GSM paper with a slight gray tint. We chose this for two reasons:
- Many notebooks today use a cheaper white paper that tends to yellow over time. Using our high quality paper and gray tint offsets this issue.
- Historically, painters used a neutral gray pallet, such as a gray marble slab, because it was easier on the eyes and helped the artist see the full range of colors. Using gray paper will allow you to write and draw in white ink.
The neutrality of the gray provides a break from the constant stimulation and contrast we experience in the world today. It cuts through the noise to provide a truly generous mental space for reflection and creativity.
To help guide you in prayer and reflection, the notebooks will also have the Daily Examen as an insert in the back. The Daily Examen is a set of questions, first utilized by St. Ignatius 400 years ago, that help us reflect on the day behind us, look towards the day ahead of us, and experience God as we move through life.
We will be offering the notebooks in ruled, blank, and dotted versions.

Why Alabaster is Better
More Than a Notebook
We believe a notebook is not just another productivity tool; it's a guide that can lead us to profound insight, deeper meaning, and a more spiritually full life. A good notebook helps get your ideas into the world. We think your ideas will make the world a more beautiful place. The Bible Beautiful changed the way we read scripture, and we believe The Notebook Beautiful will change the way we pray, reflect, and create.
