About this project
My new album is ready for release! 12 tracks deep, Built To Last is a journey through the years since you heard me last. After having a well-documented heath scare in 2011, my recovery is well beyond complete and I am once again ready to bring my music to the stages of the world - with your help! This record features collaborations with artists like hip-hop legends Edo G. and Masta Ace, my long-time Perceptionists crew member Mr. Lif, and some of Boston's best young talent, like JTronius and Dutch Rebelle. Built To Last has something for everyone on it, and now it's time to get it out to the people!
I'm releasing this record on my own and with the help of my supporters - no record label this time. With my teaching schedule doubling from what I took on last year, I need help now more than ever to gather resources to make this release effective and do the music justice. A reasonable budget (the campaign goal) will allow me to release the record, fulfill all rewards, shoot a video for a single from the album, and book at least half a year's worth of touring to promote the album. I look forward to once again sharing my work with the world - thank you!
Regardless of the outcome of this campaign, Built To Last will be released 1st quarter 2014. With your help, I am confident it will be a memorable and successful album release. Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
Kickstarter potentially presents a literal kickstart for me. Once the ball is rolling again, my touring and other income sources will allow me to regain and maintain my momentum, bringing my career back to a state of complete independence as an artist.
With the music being done, all that is needed now is for a few checks to be written and some administration work before the actual push of promoting the album begins. Bookings challenges should be minimal, as I have maintained a solid rapport with venues, promoters, and booking agents worldwide for over a decade now.
In the event of any production delays or issues with collaborators, they would be handled as usual. My collaborators are all professionals, and production is pretty much finished. At worst, delays could potentially push release from first uarter to early second quarter. Donors, fans, and media alike would all be notified of any release date shifts, in either direction for that matter.
Those worried about me slowing down due to my well-publicized 2011 heart sugery need not. I am in the best shape of my life, my health is better now than it was at the beginning of my career, and I am poised to hit the road hard to promote Built To Last. As I say on the song "Alive", I've "never felt more alive!"Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I will release the album still, just much later in 2014. If not successfully funded I will know that the interest is simply not there, so I will just put it out for myself and those who truly want it. My primary focus would move from entertainment to education at that point.
First and foremost the money will go towards mastering the album. After that, there is the manufacturing of CDs to cover pre-orders and tour merch. Same goes for posters and t-shirts. The remainder will go to paying a few of the contributors that I still owe, tour support for when I go out to promote the album, and shooting a video for a single off the record. $10k is the absolute minimum I need in order to do all of this efficiently and successfully without the assistance of a record company.
