Thanks, Huffington Post . . . hilarious.
Growing up, my favorite food was cereal. Left to my own devices I would eat a bowl for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I would down every cereal on the market - Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cocoa Krispies, Cap'n Crunch, Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, etc. etc. I never understood why there were no restaurants dedicated to serving these delicious foods. I wanted a place that had all of them in one place, and all the milks. In recent years, I've heard of a few places that do this yet unfortunately they are few and far between. Now that my taste for sugar and processed foods has diminished I thought I should create such a place - one that still offers that undeniable comfort, satisfies nostalgia, but is good for you.
I'm so excited to start this adventure. I mean, who doesn't love cereal?!
Another Kind of Sunrise is a lyric from the legendary musician Sun Ra. Most cereals are full of sugar and chemicals. Our place will offer a healthier or "another" version of these popular foods. The name suggests that we can start anew at anytime of day, which is exactly the kind of atmosphere we will provide.
About the cafe:
Another Kind of Sunrise will be a cereal-centric takeaway cafe, specializing in high quality, organic food and drink. We will offer the highest quality pre-made, traditional cereals in their simple, whole grain form such as corn flakes, rice krispies, raisin bran, frosted flakes etc. etc. We will also serve homemade paleo granola, acai bowls, and chia porridge. We will have organic, grass fed whole milk and yogurt, and organic almond milk. You'll be able to add toppings such as seasonal fresh fruits, sprouted nuts, flax seed, goji and golden berries, raw honey, coconut, hemp hearts, and cocoa nibs. From all of these options you will be able to concoct a meal according to your own special tastes. Our recipes will focus on complete nutrition. You will be able to enjoy a healthy bowl not just at breakfast but at any time of day.
Eating delicious, healthy food is important to us. Natural, whole food simply tastes better and makes you feel better. We will serve all organic, non-gmo foods. Our menu will have options for vegetarians, vegans, gluten-free, and paleo diets. We will source our food products from small organic farms and like-minded, local food artisans from Los Angeles. It is important to us that we source as much locally as possible. We are proud to serve cold pressed juices from Moon Juice and organic almond milk made with fresh young coconut water from MylkMan. Both Moon Juice and Mylkman produce and sell right here in our neighborhood. We will make our coffee with beans from Downtown LA's Handsome Coffee Roasters and our herbal teas from Distira Tisanes, also from downtown LA.
Another Kind of Sunrise will be a collective of high quality, hand-crafted goods. We appreciate the talents of our peers and are fortunate to have received their contributions in the realization of this project. The cafe's design will be a collaboration by artist Matthew Morgan from Topanga, CA and New York architecture firm DXA studio. Jordan Rogove, Greg's brother, is the head designer and owner of DXA. Singer/Artist Brandon Boyd and Diana are collaborating on a mural in the cafe's courtyard. We plan to use the patio space to hold special, intimate, acoustic, musical performances, talks on eating consciously by local health practitioners, and weekend arts & crafts classes for the neighborhood kids. We hope to include and give back to the food and art community that surrounds us.
We found the perfect spot for Another Kind of Sunrise. We will be located at 1629 Abbot Kinney Blvd, in the heart of Venice Beach, CA - one of the busiest walk streets in Los Angeles. The cafe is located at LEFT HOUSE, amongst a group of interesting workshops and retail stores: Zen & Bunni organic chocolate, Nick Fouquet hat maker, Kapital clothing, HOWL and M. Cohen jewelry makers. There will be consistent foot traffic because of its location on Abbot Kinney and its inclusion among the aforementioned stores.
We are investing our own money but need additional help. Your financial contribution will be an integral part of getting the business up and running. The additional funds will pay for the buildout materials and labor, food vending permits, kitchen supplies, the initial order of food products, and purchasing food appliances such as a refrigerator, coffee machine, coffee grinder, and blender. We truly appreciate your help!
We are in the process of renovating our space on Abbot Kinney. So far we have fixed the plumbing and electric, reinforced the structure, built new doors, and begun painting the exterior. We still need to paint the interior, finish the flooring, build planter boxes that double as seating, paint the patio, and install the mural. DXA studio designed an incredible, custom counter that will be built by Matthew Morgan in the coming weeks. We have sourced all of our foods and supplies, and are poised to make the first order for opening day. We plan to open in September.
Thank you again for your time, contribution, and for sharing this project!
- Greg & Diana

Risks and challenges
We are still waiting on the health department permit; however, they have assured us that it will be ready by the end of July. We have a built in cushion so if it arrives later than promised, it will not delay our opening.
Starting a food business always has its risks. We feel confident that ours will succeed. The location gives us a considerable advantage. Abbot Kinney is teaming with like-minded professionals and artists who will appreciate and frequent our cafe. The street is a destination spot for tourists year round. We also feel secure in our ability to manage this business. We have received guidance from successful chefs and restauranteurs since the inception of our idea and we will receive their continued support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
