My name is Andrew Knight. I'm an artist, musician, and graphic designer. I've illustrated about 5 books for Big Bear Publishing as well as book covers. You can find some of them on ibelievesanta.com.
This is my first book. It came to be after losing a job. While looking for a new job, I worked on logos and web designs. One of the companies in particular had asked for a picture of a frog with a top hat. Unfortunately, they didn't go with my design. They loved it, but it didn't fit what they were looking for. However, the character I came up with for it turned out so well, I imagined it would make a great character for a story. So, I spent some time brainstorming and created a rough draft. I also worked on numerous sketches throughout the brainstorm process. I had so much fun creating the characters and the story that I even made a sculpture of the main character, Flynn.
In the past I've worked on a few books of different genres but never got around to completing them. This is the first one I saw through to the end. All I have left to do is illustrate, print, and format for distribution.
This story takes place in the future after a catastrophic event has wiped out much of the species on earth. The animals that survived adapted and evolved thereafter. Some developed language and created their own cities and communities, while others remained behind on the evolutionary scale. Because of the vastness between the cities and towns it was much more difficult to communicate and travel, so much of the animals and amphibians stayed close together.
The main character, Flynn, a red eyed tree frog, resides in a small city beside a pond. He lives and works as an engineer for the city council.
The story begins when Flynn's beloved wife becomes ill after eating a mosquito that carried a disease called Triladectomia. In order to save her, Flynn must travel out of the city and into the wilderness to find a cure. In doing so he encounters numerous friends and enemies along the way.
While it is a children's book, it is not suitable for children younger than 12 as it contains some mild violence. I didn't want to make it too cute and at the same time I didn't want it to be too over the top.
The book will contain about 150 pages. It will also contain 10 colored illustrated pages depicting scenes throughout the book. All animals depicted in the book are true to their counterparts in the real world as far as diet and habitat are concerned. I wanted to stay as true to that as possible so that whoever reads it also gains some knowledge of the different types of animals within the story.
The pictures will be illustrated by me and will be in digital format. The cover above is an example of this. You can find other illustrated books I've done at Ibelievesanta.com.
The writing and editing is complete. I'm looking for funding in order to illustrate, print, and publish the books as well as promote myself as an artist. I will also use funds for formatting and online distribution.
Big Bear Publishing is set up to produce quality books by the end of this project.
Thanks for all your support! If this project is successful I have a sequel as well as side stories in the making that I'd like to make a reality as well!
Risks and challenges
I don't see any mishaps as the project is pretty straight forward and I have the right resources to accomplish my goal. If anything should happen, such as delays in printing or misprints, then I will do what it takes to rectify the situation. However, these instances are highly unlikely.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
