I am assembling a photo book of 100+ fine art nude and implied nude images that share an alternative approach to color.
This book explores unusual color in a departure from the mainstream. The color processes are inspired by classically toned black and white prints, monochromes (sepia, for example), and engineered color (examples of these follow).
The color treatments are meticulously applied across each image using manual tone painting (a digital version of hand coloring).
Funds raised will be put towards studio time, stylists, makeup artists, props, travel to locations, paying models, and other expenses towards finishing the images and getting books printed for the backers.
There is a timeless feeling to nude artwork. Altering the color strengthens this perception. The body of work explores effects that use new technology and draw their inspiration from classics.
When producing an image, I first examine it as black and white. An image with a strong composition will not need color. Black and white draws the viewer to the lines and form. This is one reason black and white images from years past are still revered and the process is practiced by serious art photographers. Once I have created the black and white tones I want, I will add subtle color to influence perceptions of depth and three-dimensionality. In some, I will add graininess for a vintage effect.
The book will be organized into visual themes based on color treatment, model selection, and setting. The themes will be sequenced to blend as a continuous progression through various moods. Each section will have a brief introductory text, and the majority of the pages will be filled with images. Many images will be full page.
For variety, a minimum of six models will participate in this project. With stretch goals (see below) additional models will be included.
First Images for the Book
Here are the first images I have prepared for the book. The majority of the book will be brand new images, funded by this campaign and produced exclusively for this project. Click each for a larger image.

It will be arranged as a series of visual themes, each with a brief written introduction that explains the technique, the mood, and the historical photographic techniques that inspire the modern ones. The book will be self-published and available online as print on demand. Printed in the US.

Museum Quality Art Prints
When choosing an art print, you can have any image in the book. There will be over 100 fitting a full range of moods and color themes.
These museum-quality fine art prints are on premium papers, acid-free, these archival pigment prints will last for generations. The paper is engineered for high contrast and vivid reproduction of high resolution images. Printed in the US. The finish of paper (glossy, matte, luster) will match the requirement of the individual image for ideal production of rich dark tones and lighter, more delicate tones. Ready for framing.
One-of-a-Kind Art Prints
These museum quality art prints are produced to the same exacting standards as those in the other rewards. They will be signed and numbered #1/1 (a traditional printmakers mark, meaning one of one). They will be additionally distinguished by a caption with the image title, my name, description of the alternative color process and acknowledgement of sponsorship: This one-of-a-kind art print acknowledges sponsorship for this image in the figurative photography book ALT Color Nudes.
The prints are professionally double matted, mounted on foam core, shipped flat, and ready to frame. Optionally, your name will also appear in the book as sponsoring the corresponding image.
Title #1: Overall size 29.75x24.5 inches (76x62cm) Caption: Nude in Swirling River by A K Nicholas. This subtly toned image is inspired by classic black and white photography; deep blues and hint of warm highlights enhance the appearance of depth. This one-of-a-kind art print acknowledges sponsorship of this image in the figurative photography book ALT Color Nudes.
Title #2: Overall size: 29.75x24.63 inches (76x63cm) Caption: Kate on Sheets by A K Nicholas. This manually toned image is inspired by classic hand-colored photography; muted tones allow line and form to dominate the composition and complement the serine nature of the pose. This one-of-a-kind art print acknowledges sponsorship of this image in the figurative photography book ALT Color Nudes.
Ask about other one-of-a-kind titles, which can be created from any image in the project, but only one reward per image.

Interaction with the Photographer
One of the great things about Kickstarter is that creators can interact with the community that is backing the project. I want to allow interaction in multiple ways. Your participation is, of course, optional. Included in rewards of $50 and higher:
Voting: A simple up/down opinion on a selection of images throughout the project. Its a chance for your voice to influence my artistic vision.
Q&A: Once the book is complete, the fun doesn't stop. Backers will be allowed to post questions and view my answer. Ask about anything to do with the book, tutorials, shooting, etc.I will perform work to provide thorough answers to all questions, including creating example photos and additional tutorials. Q&A will begin with book delivery and continue for 30 days.
Persistent Digital Rewards
Free Autographs for Some
Many people said signed books were important to them but only the higher level rewards guarantee an autograph. I will be randomly selecting 10% of the lower-tier packages for a free autograph. This way, everyone has a shot at having their book signed. On the off chance you don't want yours signed, just let me know.
All signatures (free or guaranteed) will include the year signed, handwritten next to my name (A K Nicholas 2015).
With more funds, I will be able to shoot more, try additional concepts, and bring models from further away. Each funding milestone represents a higher quality, more creative end product.
$2,000: 2 additional models represented (8 total) and 30 image bonus package.
$4,000: Fourth video tutorial for pledges of $60 or higher. 9 models represented, and 40 image bonus package.
$6,000: 10 models represented and 50 image bonus package. Extend Q&A period by two weeks.
Previous Book Projects
Here are my first two projects:
Risks and challenges
I have an art degree as well as a business degree. I have assembled art books before and I am aware of the challenges and risks. I have 24 years of experience photographing hundreds of models. I know how to recruit and work with models as well as to secure all the required releases for publication. I have taken production time and the unknown into account when creating the schedule. I have a proven record of delivering on-time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
