About this project
Please note: The Furrow Books shows in the video above are mockups. In the final products, the insert card will be made of the same coverstock as the interior, there will be professional offset printing on the back, and completed packs will be heat sealed to preserve freshness.
Furrow Books are rooted in the belief that our notebooks should support our work and not force us to conform to the limitations set by their materials or ruling.
If we want to draw a kick-ass sword-fighting squirrel, we shouldn’t have to postpone that spark of glorious creativity because our notebook is ruled when we need a blank page. Or if we want to layout designs for an engine that runs on day-old pizza we shouldn’t leave the world waiting just because we only have a blank page when we need graph. And if we suddenly feel the need to write a coming of age novel about a quirky guy who falls for the bodacious lifeguard from the city pool the summer before his senior year of high school, we shouldn’t postpone that inevitable future teen dramedy staring Michael Cera just because we need lined pages when our notebook only has graph.
We also shouldn’t have to carry around multiple notebooks to make sure that we have the right one if a specific need arises. And really, why would we want to carry around multiple notebooks?
Enter Furrow Books. These little beauties are produced right here in the heartland of America – Omaha, Nebraska – out of high quality and sustainable materials and they are the perfect medium for those moments when inspiration punches you in the face.
Furrows are the shallow ditches/lines that you see in a farmer’s field. They typically serve two purposes: irrigation and planting seeds. We feel that our notebooks are similar to the idea of furrows because the lines created by the ruled insert cards serve to fulfill a specific and temporary purpose; once they’ve fulfilled that purpose, the lines go away and you’re left with a thriving field of ideas.
While furrows in a field may take a little while longer to go away than the lines from the Furrow Books’ cards, we think that they are both similar in their temporariness and utility.
Furrow Books allow you to choose any ruling that you want, anywhere within your notebook through use of its versatile two-sided ruled insert cards. We've devised an ultra simple, 4-step system that allows you the utmost freedom when using your notebooks.
We worked hard to find materials that looked great and performed even better. These notebooks come in both a pack of three pocket memo books and packs of two large size. The cover and insert cards are made from a sturdy 80# coverstock, and the interior paper is a smooth, 100% recycled, 60#T white that works very well with just about any writing instrument that you throw at it. Connecting the two are a couple of strong staples, inserted by sheer brute force and determination.
The final product combines a demand for outstanding function with wonderfully simple aesthetics - resulting in an amazingly versatile, reliable, and high quality Furrow Book which minimizes the noise and clutter between the notebook, the user, and the content they create.
We only use high quality materials sourced from the good ol’ US of A and Canada for our products. We bring them all back here to Omaha, where hard working people make hard working stuff. Don’t let the minimal printing on our covers deceive you; we go all out with offset printing. Start-up costs are higher, production takes longer, and the machines are bigger and louder.
After all of the Furrow Book components is created, we meticulously insert a card into each notebook by hand, stack them, wrap them with a band, and seal them to preserve freshness. Every Furrow Book that leaves our doors has been delicately manhandled by the hands of man.
Sound like overkill? Well, in the end, we think it’s all totally worth it.
The concept behind Kickstarter, and crowdfunding in general, is amazing in that it not only allows for people across the world to give input and feedback on ideas, and ultimately make the products better, but it also helps to validate the products and make sure that there is enough interest in it to bring it to market. If the campaign isn't successful in reaching its funding goal, not only does it imply that the market may not present enough interest in the product or concept to bring it to fruition, but it does so without requiring the manufacturer to create large stockpiles of inventory without a channel to sell them.
So, we're coming to you Kickstarters for two reasons: 1) Validate the concept of Furrow Books and let us know that you're interested in it being made available, and 2) help us fund the first production run of Furrow Books.
With your support, we'll see Furrow Books come to fruition and in the hands of doers and dreamers everywhere.
For those interested in customizing their rewards, we've added the following add-on options. The below add-ons will be sent in addition to the contents of your chosen reward tier. Just add the amounts below to your pledge amount and we'll include it when everything ships.
For international add-ons: You do not need to add the below amounts together. For example, to add a single pocket size pack to your reward, you only have to add $17 to your original pledge (not $11+$17.)
After reaching our goal, we've created some stretch goal rewards. Once the goal is reached for the respective reward add on, it will be unlocked and available to be pledged for. So, keep sharing the project and encouraging others to back in order to help us reach these stretch goals and unlock some additional rewards!
Risks and challenges
The logistics of producing any product can bring about many risks and challenges; however we've worked hard with our manufacturing partners to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. While we do not anticipate any challenges occurring that would affect the successful manufacturing and fulfillment of our goals and rewards, we have developed some contingency plans incase of the following events:
We run out of ink - We'll get a new can.
The boxes are too heavy to carry alone - We'll make friends.
The post office is closed - We'll wait until the next business day.
Meteor shower - We'll get a telescope and watch.
Meteorite destroys our printing facility - There may be a slight delay in manufacturing, but we'll still get everything produced and to you, one way or another.
Firefly is renewed for another season - All manufacturing will cease during episodes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Unfortunately we do not.
The insert cards that we currently have (and are seen in the video) are made from simple white cardstock for the purpose of creating mockups of the notebooks (since the white card stock is much cheaper than the stock we're going with for the final product.) The printing on the mockup card and the final card is the same, just the material and material color will be different.
While we do not have any images of the final version of the insert card, it will be made of the same coverstock material as the notebook covers themselves, so it'll all be one seamless design.
It's pretty easy to see the lines through the paper. They're, of course, not as clear as printed lines - but they're also not permanent either. For reference, the paper used in this edition is 60#T, which is about the same as 24# copy/computer paper. If you have any of that laying around, slip a printed page behind that and it should give you a good idea.
The printed lines on the cards are slightly more bold than the lines typically printed on paper so that also helps increase the visibility through the pages.
Simply put, no. While you're actually using the notebook, you'll be applying pressure to the page, and indirectly to the card through that, so it stays in place.
When you're not using it, however, it is able to move around; though it can be easily put back into place, and it's ability to be easily removed is one of the features that we enjoy!
I suppose that's always possible, just as you'd possibly use your pen, pencil, or lucky penny, however once you lose the book and set it down, or toss it into your bag, the card shouldn't move around much.
While there's not a built in way to store the cards within this edition of Furrow Books, one simple solution that won't increase the cost of the notebooks is just to add a paper clip to the book. It'll hold the card while you're not using it, and maybe a couple more sheets of paper. Don't need the excess storage? Just remove the paper clip and you're all set.
Not really. The paper absorbs much of the impression - though if you were really pressing hard on the page, you'll might get some impression on the card underneath (however from our regular use, we didn't experience much if any impressions on the cards.)
Nope. From edge to edge, you can use the entire page without worry of pages coming out. If you really need to remove a page, scissors are always an option.
These notebooks are bound with a couple staples inserted with sheer brute force and determination.
The cover is 80# in weight and pretty durable. It's not hard cover, so it can tear, but it's still pretty durable all-around. One aspect (that we enjoy, at least) is that the cover will naturally wear and show use over time, so it really does become more unique to each user the more that they use it.
Yes! The paper is archival, acid free, and 100% recycled from post consumer waste.
I would like to pledge for the Limited Edition, but would also like to receive other packs. Is this possible?
Yes, it's totally possible and the primary reason the add-ons were created. To pledge for a limited edition book and additional packs:
1. Pledge for the Limited Edition reward.
2. Increase your pledge by the amount for the add-on you're interested in.
3. Approve it all, and you'll be all set!
Yes! Just please shoot us a message first as we'll have to manually adjust the amount of limited edition notebooks available for others. This is the make sure that the number of LE books pledged for doesn't exceed 2,500.
After the campaign is completed, we'll send out a survey where you can enter your shipping address and provide any additional information, if necessary.
International shipping is very expensive. The USPS increased their rates this year and so we've structured the shipping rates to reflect that. It's an unfortunate cost that we can't reduce (trust us, we'd love it if international shipping were cheaper.)
